YOU ARE ON POINT! My hair started locing at 1-2 months. My hair is 97% locked @ 5.2 months The trick is use a light water spritz daily from rosemary leaves and use very little oil or none at all . Too much oil and your hair will take longer to lock up, and wash your baby locs every 2 weeks using a wig cap. Our hair loves water and clean hair loc up faster.
I was so glad to find a video with someone with very short hair like mines who I feel relates more to my journey I grew my hair out for six months from a fade and started so my baby locks are short
@RyanJernard A shower cap won't work because it prevents water from getting on your hair. you need something permeable so water can seep through to your hair and scalp.
I'm already basically past all this stage but these are good tips, nice video and informative for everyone! cuz some people out here giving really wrong info, but not you. good job
I'm starting my second loc journey and everything you said was correct trim my own experiences too. I would like to piggyback on your tip on breakage. For this who like to use head bands to pull the hair back or wear in a ponytail, DO NOT pull it back so tight. It bring tremendous tension and severe breakage. Once the locs are mature and long enough, you'll be able to rock to ponytail jus fine without stressing your edges to get them to fall. These tips r really good. Keep it up!
Good, quick, informative video. I just started my locs this month and this was very helpful. I am going to watch your sea salt video because I think my hair needs a little help locking. Thank you!
aye thanks for these tips they are and have been very helpful to me. umm to me this is one of the best short videos that I have seen about locs and I have been watchin it just about every week to make sure im following these simple helpful tips, so thank you for all your helpful tips
you are so correct about the frizz. I work out a lot, I'm newly loc'd, my locs are washed once a month. I cleans my scalp, with natural products in between.
thank you so much i thought my hair was thinning but your number 5 tip saved me from getting very paranoid. because i was twisting my hair every 2 weeks (i didnt use gel until today which is a year into the dreads and i started with a tracy chapman look) i thought my hair was thinning but ive never twisted them too hard or had thecoil thing happen
@Iris Hart you're welcome. I'm glad to help in ant way i can. there's no sense in worrying about the frizz. retwisting too much can cause breakage. I'm happy you're embracing the frizz. =)
@Carlita Dorsey I've never heard that aloe vera speeds up the locking process. but i do know that it's a good all natural product to use when retwisting.
It necessary to cover your locs every night, retwist or not. You can use a durag, cap, scarf, bonnet, dread sock, etc just as long as all of your locs are covered and protected from lint.
Just got it twisted as in you just started your locs? If so you may wanna try a different method like two strand twists or interlocking. Working out rigorously with comb coil baby locs usually never end well.
I am two months into my loc journey, this was very helpful! Unfortunately I am one of those people who went out and bought all of that "Jamaican Mango and Lime" product line :(
Wow you are so pretty and this is a good video because you are telling the truth you don't need all those chemicals in your hair good video I've been growing my dreads for 3 years and they are so long the only thing I use is aloe and I wash it with sea salt and I also use vinegar and water it helps clean your scalp and keep it that way good vid
Hello there. I just got my locks about on 12/17/12. It looks like I am starting to get new growth already. I basically only use essential oils on my hair. I was glad to hear about the frizz. I want them to look neat and not so frizzy. It seems that some of them are locking and others are just doing what they want to do. I would like to know about something I heard. Someone told me about using 100% pure aloe vera gel on my dreads to help my ends lock faster. Have you tried that?
Thank you! I really needed to hear "embrace the frizz" because that is a sensitive area for me. I've been trying sooooo hard to just leave my hair alone. I retwist my hair as soon as I see one hair out of place. Then I wonder why they won't lock up. It's been about a month and a half and I must have retwisted 4 times. I'm gonna tie my hands behind my back and chaant "embrace the frizz", "embrace the frizz". Thanks again!
veryyy helpful!! thanks again. as soon as you talked about the frizz i smiled..God knows i cant stand the frizz but its normal cuz ireally have soft hair..thanks a million. and i see you rep your HBCU!! 3 times for Tuskegee!!!..Im reppin Florida A&M University Rattlers!
Just started watching your videos.... I have have been contemplating loc'ing my hair for awhile now. I'm four days away from getting out of the military and now I am ready for my locs! I've been protecting my hair with two strand twists and today I think I have decided to let them loc instead of going to a salon. My problem is that, many of my twists are not the same size and some are fairly tiny. Should I redo them so that I can possibly make them the same size and a little bigger or should I
the lemon juice will help dry it out which will make your hair lock faster. It also can cause the color of your hair to lighten in the sun. you can skip the lemon juice if you dont want lighter hair.
retwistin every week and a half is to often. I;m glad you're waitin one and a half months. for the itch i think JML makes no itch spray. you might wanna check it out. good luck with your loc journey butha.
thanks for the tip on false thinning! i know i'd be freaking out if i hadn't watched this video lol. i'm starting mine in a few days with my 3rd set, i hope this time it works out.
✊LOVE YOUR VIDEO ON BEGINNERS Locs AND TWIST🙆.BUT I HAVE A QUESTION ON THE STOCKINGS NALON Routine I TRY IT ALONE TIME AGO AND ALL THE DIRT WAS AT THE FRONT OF MY HAIR LINE CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHY!!!
yes, everyone's hair grows. two months is ample time to accumulate new growth. I say if you have new growth, then retwist. If not then hold off. The biggest mistake new lockers make is to retwist too often in the beginning.
Try a clarifying shampoo and if that still doesn't get it out you might wanna try an ACV rinse depending on how mature your hair is. Switch up products the products you use and get rid of whatever is causing the build up.
In one of your more recent vids you recommended a brand of conditioner. Which month did you start using conditioner on your locs? Also do you believe waiting a year or longer before using conditioner on your locs? My locs are 7 months old and all are fully loced) Some believe even with mature locs conditioners can cause unraveling what has been your experience? Your locs are looking so healthy and full.
i got got my dreads i had em for like a week baby dreads about 2-3 inchs and like the roots are unravel sometimes and i palm twist em it gets anoying ! and i sleep with a du rag and in the morning the sides are flat is that harming my dreads ??
im gettin my dreads started tomar and i was wondering if i culd put a scull cap on for football practice under my helmet den dry it immediately after practice @shyshybaby08
That should work. Make sure the cap is tight enough to hold the locs in place. They might have a smell since you'll be workin hard and sweatin a lot. idk how hard you practice, that might have an effect on it. Try to hold out a month till your first wash. If you cant, at least wait a few weeks. Be sure to use a cap when you wash. Good luck on your journey =)
Some people use a comb to retwist, but I wouldn't if I were you. it will come out just as good if you use your fingers. if you really wanna use a comb to retwist wait till your locs lock so you won't comb out any newly formed buds.
I just started my dreads.. They're more like baby dreads smaller than yours i just got it don't like about a week - 2 weeks its itching but my hair is not fully locked how would i get around this..?
You can pat them (like a weave, lol) to try and curve the itch a little. You don't want to do too much heavy-duty scratching. Also you can use witch hazel to clean between your parts. Use it on the scalp NOT the locs. Put a little on a q-tip and go thru the head applying it row by row. That should help a little, but there's not much you really can do to relieve the itch except wash your hair, but I wouldn't recommend doing it this early on. Just try the witch hazel for now and thug it out a few more weeks until your 1st wash. And be sure to use a wave cap on the first wash.
+shyshybaby08 I sleeps with a durag on daily.... since I just started.. I'm at the twist stage... on my bored things I just twist them just because.. n now hair is getting a little fuzzy. I don't know if they unraveled, but I'm just twisting that hair with what's already in a twist have you ever experienced this before?
+YoungH1983 Yes, everyone experiences that. It's normal for stray hairs to come out of your locs from time to time. You just put them back in place when you retwist them. But try not to randomly twist your hair out of boredom. Thats a bad habit. Twisting your hair while it's dry can lead to breakage down the road. Good luck on your journey
Nice tips..for me i retwist every week because after i wash my hair its a mess really thick n takes longer to dry if i dnt retwist them my hair isnt thinin though so thats the good part
I wouldn't suggest doing it. Some people do it because of their hair texture. Rubber bands wont help your hair lock faster, they just hold it in place while it locs.
8 years later and this video is still useful , thank you sister
You're welcome. I'm glad it's still helping the community out 😊🙏🏿

Wow you touched on every question I had in mind. Just one video and you got staight to the point each tip 👍🏾
This is the only video I needed to see. Thank you! It's like a culmination of every loc video!
You're welcome sis
I was so glad to find a video with someone with very short hair like mines who I feel relates more to my journey I grew my hair out for six months from a fade and started so my baby locks are short

Outstanding! Thank you so much for these tips. I'm brand new to locs and I really needed this..

I think that was the best video I've seen about locs on youtube. You helped me out a lot! Thanks
@DaChaosOneTV you're very welcome. I love my HBCU. Famu was one of my options when applying.
thank you so much i thought my hair was thinning but your number 5 tip saved me from getting very paranoid. because i was twisting my hair every 2 weeks (i didnt use gel until today which is a year into the dreads and i started with a tracy chapman look) i thought my hair was thinning but ive never twisted them too hard or had thecoil thing happen
Thanks for all of the helpful TIPS!!!! I will definitely refer back to this during my loc journey. Keep the tips coming!!!!

It depends. what method did you use to start them? And do you have new growth?
It necessary to cover your locs every night, retwist or not. You can use a durag, cap, scarf, bonnet, dread sock, etc just as long as all of your locs are covered and protected from lint.
After a retwist, is it really necessary to have on a wavecap/du-rag/etc, before you go to sleep?
I fell asleep to this your voice is relaxing to me for some odd reason
Just got it twisted as in you just started your locs? If so you may wanna try a different method like two strand twists or interlocking. Working out rigorously with comb coil baby locs usually never end well.
I am two months into my loc journey, this was very helpful! Unfortunately I am one of those people who went out and bought all of that "Jamaican Mango and Lime" product line :(
You have the best tips for baby loc starters. Ty!!
would you suggest tiny rubberbands on each newly dread to lock the newly dreads faster than without rubberbands??
@ntezaaron use something to secure them down like rubber bands or clips.

What a good video. Good advice and your locks look great. Yes I love the hoodie.
Thank you! I just got starter locs last week - and i already want a retwist - but I will embrace the frizz!!! (even tho it's so hard)
@Iris Hart you're welwI'm glad to help in any way i can. there's no sense in wiring
I'm a month into the journey and this is good advice, I play a lot and wanted advice on washing, thanks!🎾🎾🎾
will lemon juice help it lock faster

Great tips all made great sense especially using a dark towel I would've never thought of that
Not as much but it's looking pretty rough and needs it. But new growth within two months?
retwistin every week and a half is to often. I;m glad you're waitin one and a half months. for the itch i think JML makes no itch spray. you might wanna check it out. good luck with your loc journey butha.
@WeddingPlanner00 is probably your hair texture. if it gets too bad you might wanna try a different locking/maintaince method.
GREAT TIPS😌 I JUST STARTED MY LOCS AND I NEEDED THAT INFO😌 THANK YOU😀
she gotta whole lotta sense
thumbs up. how far are you in your journey now?
Hey I think do to working out @ the gym I think I've sweated out my starter locs, been in almost a month, should I go get them re- twisted?
Your tips helped me during my first 10 days. Back then I didn't know how to subscribe...haha Had to give you props for a great video!
design? what do you mean by that? like the parts or the locs?
i started my dreads from flexi rods (curls) love ur locs

Those are some great advice. You mentioned before about not using heavy products. My lockticion uses Bee's wax. Is that good or bad?
thanks for the tip on false thinning! i know i'd be freaking out if i hadn't watched this video lol. i'm starting mine in a few days with my 3rd set, i hope this time it works out.

My dreads was like 5 months n I use tea tree to loc em.
Hey I Started Mine In November And Mine Are Locked Already And I Need To Keep My Hair Washed.. Should I Wash Every 2 Weeks.
Some people use a comb to retwist, but I wouldn't if I were you. it will come out just as good if you use your fingers. if you really wanna use a comb to retwist wait till your locs lock so you won't comb out any newly formed buds.
Thank you. I'm just trynna help the newbies out a lil. OJ on deck lol

@ntezaaron you're welcome
THIS vid need more views cause all the tips that she gave out was real helpful 0_0
JML gave me some lint and i ended up cutting half a loc....:(
I just hit 6 months and I had questions bout some loose ends gread vid
@originalathena This is my first set, but I did research for almost 2 years before I started my locs. Thanks for the sub.
I wrap my hair, keep it from getting wet in shower but my locs, still unravel :-( any suggestions.
Very useful video! Thank you so much!
thanks and you are very welcome.
@rolandleelee13 you're welcome
JUST CAME ACROSS YOUR VLOG. GREAT TIPS
thank you
@BostonlifeBeIght lol. thanks
Lots of helpful tips shyshybaby08
Thanks for that info. It was very helpful tho. I'm a month and about 2 weeks in.
You're very welcome. Glad i could help. I hope you decide to lock.
I wouldn't suggest doing it. Some people do it because of their hair texture. Rubber bands wont help your hair lock faster, they just hold it in place while it locs.
