Yep, this is a big missed opportunity. I’ve got 1st edition, the expansion with the orange dice, and all the powerups and have been waiting for something like this, but this isn’t it. Minis, lightning bolt shaped energy, and including the extra monster sets would’ve done it for me.
Imagine after buying the big box, they release some limited edition giant box few years later with more exclusive stuff integrating king of Tokyo New York and kot night mode etc.
If there were those extra monsters like Anubis and King Kong in there, it would be an insta buy from me. As is, it doesn't really justify double dip for content that I mostly own. That said, if you don't own the original, this is a must buy.
I never understand IELLO...they issued takedown notices for the 3d printable models on Thingiverse but then they never come out with a minis version of KOT. The baby Gigazaur was an exclusive to the Target version so it's not even new.
@@Arjay82 haha, that's true. But, yes I only know because I had posted some KoT meeples models. Another person had lovingly designed full miniatures. Both got taken down. I understand protecting their property but we're just fans celebrating the game.
As someone with the 1st edition this is disappointing. This should have had the lightning bolts instead of cubes, the wickedness track as a module and the KoNY power ups for the Tokyo monsters. It's annoying since we know they had all of these components and decided not to add them to this.
I have a friend that got me playing King of Tokyo and always wanted my own copy, this was a perfect opportunity to get it all in one box and now I can introduce it to others. The only disappointment for me was the box isn’t designed to fit sleeved cards. Not having lightning shaped energy and miniatures didn’t bother me at all.
I got all my cards in perfect fit standard size I got off Amazon I’ve been using them for a long time now and they fit sleeved in the monster box in the card tray that they packaged cards sits in
@@simonhudson7029 I didn’t do that I don’t even know what size to use for those but if they’re snug enough I’m sure you can fit them and if they stack too high there’s some extra room in the box they could go in and even if they don’t fit in there slot sleeved they will still fit elsewhere in the box
I also fit every monster counter and standee with out stands attached in one of the pockets and have one whole other empty so it could fit 10 more counters and 10 more standees without stands
@@BurritoMage thanks for the reply, I have them sleeved already, unfortunately they are not the perfect fit sleeves. It’s not a huge issue as I have storage and transport boxes. I even managed to pick up the limited monster call CyGull from a local game store. Have good day :)
You forgot the extra 11 promo Power Cards. Basically this game adds Baby Gigzaur+Evolutions and those 11 cards. Other than that it is identical to the previous version.
The question I ask myself is: what purpose does this serve? If you’re catering to the casual, mass market crowd: they will just buy the core box because it’s cheaper and they probably won’t even know this exists on the first place. So you are targeting hobbyists. If you are catering to hobbyists who don’t own the game already, they will be underwhelmed and simply wait for a better edition. They’ve waited 10 years and haven’t jumped on it. Why start now? If you are catering to hobbyists who own the game already: you haven’t offered any real upgrade. What a misstep.
But I also feel a sense of that I won't ever will get the full product because there is no full product. This happened to me with Here to slay, if you want the full thing you gotta print proxies to complete things you cant buy anywhere.
Ya, it's a very lazy production. Just a cash grab. They could've done deluxe components, monster miniatures, etc. Dark Edition is still the nicest version. This is not worth the money.
Yup. either make it with all the monsters in it, or a version with deluxe components, or a very cheap big box to hold your stuff with only baby Gigasaur included.
I already have my basic one with several expansions, so not really convinced about the proposition. They could have added a little more/different expansions to create more appeal. I agree with you Tom on the monsters minis. That would have been awesome. I do believe they missed the opportunity to create some amazing acrylic standees, as an affordable alternative!
I own Dark Edition and really enjoy it. Don't own the base or any expansions so I was hoping this would accommodate all my Dark Edition components in a single box without having to remove the insert. The inability to sleeve your cards is also a serious point against. It seems like the insert takes up a lot of space for what it holds, unfortunately. Maybe it is still worth it. Need to mull it over
It's almost like they would have been better off releasing this size box but instead of another base game inside it would have all the promos and upgraded components like the lightning bolt energy inside. Heck with the amount of promos they have for this game they can even keep the sticker price or aim higher and I'm sure it still would have sold. Huge missed opportunity with this
I bought this with the intention of putting everything KofT in ONE box (including the monster packs). You can do that kind of... some things just kind of float around. Also there is no room for sleeved cards unfortunately. I'm just glad I have everything now but I definitely think it could have been better.
We actually don't like the lightning bolts - they're harder to differentiate in a pile, and the sharper ones stick my fingers. I replaced mine in Dark with cubes from Etsy. We have Halloween, Anubis, and the Power up expansions. Might get Cthulu - but what I really wish I had is evolution cards for the Dice Tower Iron Rook promo character. Seems like he would have some 'crushing' type powers; I wish iello had included them.

When the Dice Tower reviewed King of NY, I was persuaded that would be better and bought. But even now they admit to that blunder. I eventually sold it, and yesterday I ordered this, because I have played KoT and have wanted it for years. I am considering ordering King Kong, but having 10 different monsters in the box may be enough.
How do they call this the "Monster Box" when it doesn't include huge monster miniatures? So disappointing. Why even bother. iello needs to listen to the fans. This is a cash grab.
hmmm yeah I agree this is an odd set. I've got the base game and power up and basically don't need this. I do think the box is way too big for the kind of game it is but thats always been the case. My KoT lives in the box for one of the carcassonne expansions and fits in just fine. Handy as its the game I take to pretty much any gathering (along with cockroach poker and Rhino Hero). Cheers for the vid Tom, definitely gave us the info we needed.

As Tom said- if you don’t have the game or the expansions it’s a good choice. I have the first edition with the two expansions, so there’s little here to woo me. Monster minis would have been a huge draw…but then again, my monsters are a bit different. Power ups are a must use. Halloween costumes have amazing abilities but they ARE overly silly. The Halloween dice have always been unnecessary, so it would have been nice to see the lightning bolts for energy or upgraded tokens instead. And no return of the Kraken from the first version?
This seems like a major step back after Dark Edition.. quality is way worse. I’ll be sticking with DE for sure. Shame they didn’t release expansions to dark edition though
I went to amazon and paid $14 for a bag of kaiju monsters (kong, godzilla mechgodzilla, rodan, mothera, monster zero etc) and we use them instead of the standies. doesn't have to match your image. just allow each player to pick a board and pick a monster.
Looks cool, but they should have an upgrade pack version for people who own the base game already. I'd be happy just getting the power up cards. It also doesn't include the Christmas tree monster.

Stonemaier is in the process of releasing an expansion for Wingspan and Viticulture alongside a big box storage solution. This is the way to do it I think, though, that being said their Legendary Box for scythe wasn't nearly as nice as some big boxes. It is literally just a box with no storage solution, so I hope these next efforts are a bit better.
Cool if you don't own any King Of Tokyo. I'm curious why it's not the two expansions plus Chthulu, Anubis, King Kong and Cyber Tooth or maybe just those 4 together plus Baby Gigazaur! I personally don't need minis I like the larger Dark Edition standees.
I got 1st ed with all the expansions, KONY with the expansion and picked up 2ed for the Penguin and Kitty because I found it dirt cheap and also picked up the 4 monster expansions and the dark. They'll have to do a lot better than just Baby Gigasaur for me to pick this thing up.
I had a dream about playing Summoner Wars as a hex and counter game. Then I woke up and thought "how is that not BattleLore?" I mean, it's not... but I'm not sure that hex and counter improves Summoner Wars. *shrug*
I played KoT a long time ago. The I got into the hobby but I went for KoNY because it had extra mechanics (the buildings, military and zones made it feel like the game "Rampage!" From the N64. So I have KoNY, the power up, King kong, and Anubis, with Cthulhu and the fourth monster pack coming soon from Amazon (I live in Chile, it's a long trip). I was thinking in buying the big box, but seeing it doesn't integrate the monsters into KoNY, it doesn't seem right to me.
So it’s advertised as the monster box but it doesn’t even have all the expansions in it? I was thinking there was a new red dice in the tiger expansion and I don’t see those characters…you are right, just an odd set. I’ll keep my base game, it’s super fun as it is and the random extra characters is just cosmetic.🤷♂️
I can already see that the cards won't fit sleeved... Instant pass just for this reason! I can't understand why publishers still don't think about this 🤦♂️
@@BurritoMage sleeves nearly double the height of a deck. The cards are just millimeters below the top of the well already. How is it possible that they fit?

This ones really nice but I own the dark edition too and it’s really pretty and will suit a more mature crowd if your group is into the less colorful kid friendly looking art then dark edition is a great one and the lightning shaped energy is awesome
Dark Edition is SO much better. Wickedness track makes the game deeper and more enjoyable for even experienced board gamers. Until they do better than the Dark Edition I see no reason to buy anything else.
Tom you are wrong. Throw away the insert and you have even more space. I put my box organizer in it and still have like 30% more space for more items. I had both my KOT & KONY full and now my KONY is freed up. So yes it is more space but a waste of money for the same thing but IF you want the extra space then yes worth it. And there is also promo cards add to this set which only came out as first edition cards.
Tried this at my local game store, the instructions are poorly written none of us could get out heads round it , tried playing a game for 15 mins and put it straight back

I have 1st Ed, plus NY, power up for both, all the extra monsters and Halloween. What I'd like is the dials and standee for Cyber Kitty.

Im still waiting for expansions to the King of Tokyo Dark Edition. The added mechanics from that mode make it my go to version.

I have all of the monsters with evolution cards and I had to toss the insert to make everything fit.
This is a great replacement for buying the base game

had to make sure this video wasn't from years ago. I bought the target edition and combined with the 1st edition and dark edition years ago.
I wish they would have added the Dark content.

2:32 shows that the newer one last a lower number by the star, and says "It's pretty much, exactly, the same."
That's the victory point dial, which you turn and set to your current point total, so they are exactly the same

If you want the looks I'd go for Dark. If you want more gameplay, especially with those power up cards, I'd go for this box.
