    You can build trellising cages for you container and ground planted vegetables by using 14 gauge metal fencing. It is easier than you think and it will save you a lot of money. This cage is great for tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, peas, zucchini, squash, melons and more. You can extend the cage easily to 6 feet with bamboo poles or the like.

    Brilliant! Couple things you might consider Mr. Gary. Wrap the bucket in the wire after the pots are filled and planted. In this way, you can plant anything and alter whether or not it has a trellis in the future. With your hand holes, just cut the wire in the middle and bend all 4 prongs back. This way, you have no sharp edges or future maintenance. You hand simply brushes the smooth bend. I've tore up my hands WAY too many times on cages. I hate adding things to someone's channel cause I don't want to steal someone's thunder, but sometimes I think helping is worth the chance. You always have great ideas.

      Hydroponic Gardening & More with Brent funny that you would say that, I was thinking the same thing. Why not just cut in the middle? you can always unbend one of the wires to connect or attach to the bent one for storage. I don't think he will object to your suggestion this is what it's all about. Someone has to start with an idea and then a lot of us can brainstorm off of that.

    18 gauge is actually thinner than 14 gauge, as the gauge goes down the diameter increases. A pair of wire cutters ( aka angle cutters or dikes) should work just fine, or tin snips like he's using in the video. Also most pliers should be able to cut through wire just fine

      You can sharpen the up and take out any nicks in the blades. Not a big deal.
      BTW - I prefer flush cutters to bypass or anvil. I also use a grinder on most wire, but not on this type so much.

    Because of my dog 🐕 I bought lots of fencing. I built the trellis around my containers and grow bags they work great and last forever. My raised bed I had to enclose to so that made it easy to trellis vegetables all along the perimeter . I left one side open so I could still work and grew marigolds in the middle. They're small beds. Even the plots are fenced with the Home Depot fencing and post. So no more dog destroyed beds from burying bones. I made her a small bed and added some compost she loves to roll in it and now she has her own garden spot. I said to my sister I think I'm going to add 2 more raised beds and fence them. She said is Tallulah the dog gonna have any yard left.

    I used to make cages this way but I found that for my usage they rusted out to soon, were hard to pick fruit through, and got bent easily. Rewire that they use in concrete pours is a lot heavier (you need bolt cutters to cut through it), has six inch openings, will last for decades without rusting through. I wouldn't bury the light weight cages in the soil or they won't last but one or two seasons as the soil and nutrients will rust them to pieces. You can purchase fiber glass rods in different lengths to use as stakes and they will last indefinitely. Push them into the soil to support the cages. I use them as stakes in my greenhouse and tie plants directly to the stakes. Beats having to replace all the stakes every season since I simply reuse them year after year. You can buy bundles of 25 pretty reasonably.

    For our DIY tomato cages, we've found it works better for us to use welded wire fencing with a 4 in. x 4 in. mesh, rather than the 4 in. x 2 in. mesh that is more widely available. That way, there's no need to cut hand holds to facilitate harvesting/tending the plants. The plants can be accessed relatively freely through the mesh. Once the cage is in place, while the tomato is still young, if it starts to fall over I use tomato clips to support the plants with twine tied toward the top of the cage, holding the tomato upright and centered in the cage. This works much better for me than placing a pole in the center when I first plant our tomatoes. We use these for all our cherry and determinate tomatoes.
    For our indeterminate slicer tomatoes, we use a low cost (

    I know this is an older video but I can’t thank you enough! I built 2 of these today and have 9 more to go! I do have a question to see if you think just making a “C" go in the bucket instead of a full circle but then use string/twine to sort of lace it with a larger front opening instead of fastening with the cut wire would work. So maybe instead of cutting off a piece at 35", maybe do 31"… it would still mostly surround the bucket. I saw this done with a heavier wire and t-posts around an EarthBox but with pepper plants….It was surrounded on 3 sides and left the front open with twine zig-zagging across the front from bottom to top. I’m wondering if the same concept could work with the buckets and these cages.

  • @YoMommaSoFatt1
    @YoMommaSoFatt1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good stuff gary! I always look for different ways to support my veggie plants without having to buy the expensive tomato cages. I never knew if using different materials could effect the vegetable (plastics, or different metals). How about plastic containers? I like how you use 5 gal buckets. I seen people using storage totes. I can get a 10-13 gallon tote for like 5 bucks but i didnt know if the plastic would effect the veggies like people talk about using treated wood vs untreated. Also what about cheap containers from like the dollar store (containers not meant to be pots)?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't personal pay much mind for treated wood. It is copper treated for the last 15 years or so, not arsenic. The plastic can be an issue but I think it is stretch. The UV rays are what degrade plastic and can cause issue. That is occurring on the outside and not at the inside, as soil blocks it. You can use large turkey bags to line 5 gallon buckets too if you are concerned.

      Its all in the soil. Im s first time gardener, I used a 4x4x12 raised bed. Got 7 50qt bags of raised bed soil. Put in the sunniest spot. My husband has grown in containers all his life but hardly got any tomatoes or anything. I got 7 or 9 ft tall vines. He's never had that, even with his parents garden. Its the soil I think. I knew nothing at all and it had nothing to do with me.

    Hi Gary I love all your videos.Except this one. many years ago I made these exact cages.same wire.They were great until i had to put my hands through the holes to tend to plants or pick fruit.i had cuts and scraps all over my arms.Even though i covered tbe sharp cut ends i used duct tape,cauck,all kinds of stuff it would always fall off. this cage is just too dangerous i ended up flattening them out and never used them again.so just to let you know my experance with them. But thankyou Gary for all your other informative and great videos.

    These are nice, but the advantage of buying those tapered tomato cages (as you show in the video) is that they fit into each other very easily so they take up much less space when they are stored over the winter.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 4-5 foot cages are a bit expensive. This is cheaper but the standard tomato cages work perfectly fine as I used them for years and still use them. You can also by fencing that has larger holes.

    the issue i see with this is once the plant is enclosed and grows tall within the cage how is it possible to put granular fertilizer around the base of the plant because the gaps between the cage will be to small to put a digging tool through unless after the cage has been put up then cut gaps in the bottom of the wire big enough so that a garden tool can pass through to enable the cultivation of the soil

    I'm pretty sure the lower the number the gauge the thicker the wire. 18 gauge is thinner than 14 gauge. So your cutter is wrong.
