    Hope you enjoy the next video in my Road To Oppenheimer series. I've got plenty more coming in the buildup to July including more essays that look back at some of Nolan's previous films. Just to let you know, tickets do also go on sale for Oppenheimer tomorrow, so I will be keeping you up to date on anything that Universal drop whether it be a poster or new marketing.

    The parallelisms of this movie to current global events are striking and have convinced me that Nolan is beyond genius. Not only he is a masterful film maker but he has the pulse of our times as if he was someone who travels trough time like many of the characters in his movies do. Oppenheimer is put on trial because the caprice of a vindictive politician drowning on self grandiosity something happening today. At the same time Oppenheimer refuses to give in and is trying to speak his mind as he is on trial and being censored and called a communist for just trying to have an open dialogue within the global scientific community about the chain reaction that the bomb had just began and the arms race he can foresee. In an interview dated 1965 Oppenheimer talks about the break between the communications among the scientific communities of the US and the then Soviet Union. The same is happening right now between the scientific communities of the US, Russia and China. Funny when Strauss is asked who were the 3 senators to vote against him only one name is given, "Kennedy", and is described as an emerging politician, does it ring a bell with what has been going on July 20th of 2023? The chain reaction unleashed by the atomic bomb is an analogy for many things that have come to be and will be. An unstoppable global arms race. AI etc.

    Just one correction. The Japanese had offered to surrender but not unconditionally which were unacceptable terms and then the bombs were dropped to forced the Japanese to surrender unconditionally.
    As an addendum many Japanese were happy with bombs dropping and ultimately forcing the surrender because otherwise people were preparing to find to the last man, woman and child. The reason the Japanese were so fearful of surrender is because they believed they would be treated how they treated other peoples who surrendered IE the Rape of Nanjing. When that all didn't happen and the reforms made favorable particularly to women tensions cooled and relations got better to where we are today.

"The Beginning or the End" 1947 B&W a highly fictionozed account on the 1st "Little Boy" development and use after all it was just 2years after the fact and most details were still Top Secret. "Above and Beyond" 1952 B&W more focused on Col. Paul Tinnets who flew the Enola Gay on the first mission to Hiroshima. "Fat Man and Little Boy" 1989 starring Paul Newman, Dwight Schultz and John Cusack which focuses on Gen. Groves and Oppenheimer at Los Alamos and the Trinity test. I am a little over 700 pages into "American Prometheus." It is a great book and I am looking forward to the movie. One thing that I am a little tired of reading and hearing though is how the Japanese were "ready to surrender" at the end of WWII, making the dropping of the two A bombs unnecessary. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Japanese government was not ready to surrender. In fact they were mobilizing their entire population for a bloody battle to the death with the American invaders. Our choice was to vaporize 50,000 people or kill through close combat or starvation (if we decided to blockade the Japanese islands) several million people.

    • @veronicamaine3813
      @veronicamaine3813 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      not sure where you go your data but the Six were debating how to surrender for 6 weeks prior to Hiroshima. While there were elements who wanted to fight to the last man the threat of the Soviet invasion was forcing them to make peace with the allies to avoid a communist take over. The bombs were un-necessary. And as far as Nagasaki goes, that was done without Truman’s knowledge and was just the generals looking for another a target to use the new weapon on ( and it was a poor target in many respects). So no, your choosing to believe a narrative that is patently untrue.

      @@veronicamaine3813 My sources are about half a dozen history books that I have read over the past years. They come from a variety of authors from diverse backgrounds and political points of view. You are not incorrect in your statement that there was a faction of the Japanese government that was putting out peace feelers through various channels, the Soviet Union among them. You are also correct when you state that the Japanese government as very concerned that the Soviet Union would enter the war and therefore want a piece of defeated Japan. The major bone of contention was over "unconditional surrender." A term the Japanese were unwilling to accept until after the bombs were dropped. The "elements" that you mention that wanted to fight to the death was actually a significant portion of the ruling council. They are the ones who tried to overthrow the Emperor when he decided to accept surrender after the bombs were dropped. Anyway, non of us can know for sure what actually happened unless you were actually there. We believe the narrative we chose to believe.

    Don’t forgot the most important example of TDKR’s anti Occupy Wall Street. I think you’re looking a bit too deep with Dunkirk. EU is inherently corrupt and Britain came to the rescue when everyone else were losers. Brexit all day every day. Long live Great Britain!

      Living in Great Britain is so depressing. Corrupt government, basic financial bills sky high, crime rate increase, divorce rate increase... not to mention the weather. Its not great anymore

    Because movies are trying to be as diverse& woke as possible it means most movies nowadays have some really terrible actors in them& that’s one of the reasons movies have went downhill

      Okay - I am yet to see a bad movie purely due to diversity. Stop trying. To justify your prejudice - this is a flimsy narrative and everyone see s through it.
