Not to mention, hiking amongst tall trees reminded us of home. :)
We are quite quickly checking things off of our Must-See Germany Bucketlist!! Last weekend we explored the Bavarian Alps. Check out those 2 videos here: • Neuschwanstein Castle ... & • Facing Fears In Austri...

Fun fact about birthdays: in Germany, it's considered bad luck to wish someone happy birthday or to celebrate before the actual day. (That said, on the day of: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🎂🎊 )

The thing with bakery is some off them are generally bad and then there are the ones that ither get the cakes right or the bread its veery rare to find a bakery that can do both things right. And tbh this piece of Schwarzwälder-Kirsch-Torte looks like its made in a factury frozen and then served at the bakery it does not look hand made. So you might want to give it a retry at a diffrent Bakery /Konditor
Edit: i too dont like a bad black forest cake they can taste old or have a verry fade taste or have to much Alkohol used in it its easy to ruin it and hard to get it right

It says that Blackforrest Cake is a Cream or Buttercreamcake with Kirschwasser (cherry brandy) and that the taste of the Kirschwasser is distinctly recogniseable.
If you can't taste the cherry and alcohol, it is not a real Schwarzwälder Kirsch.

No wildfires and pretty good air qualtiy in this area and most of germany. In the rhine valley are lots of lakes and of course the river AND it is the warmest part of germany. So there is often a high evaporation.......In other times u could see from the tower the complete vally covered with fog or low cruising clouds.......and u are in the sun....

Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte is sooo delicious, but you have to buy it at a ‚Konditorei‘, not from a normal bakery, which are specialized in bread and cookies.

If your little kid is a few years older, you shold try out the "Europapark" in Rust near Freiburg which is focused to be very family friendly and germanys biggest Amusement Park so far. I cant tell if you are amusermentpark guys, but in my personal opinion it is highly recommended for two days full of adventures and fun. I'd been traveling to this place with my daughter since she hab was a little kid until now when she's actual an adult young lady. Btw, the best food in town is located at the restaurant "Zum Ochsen" which is five minutes footwalk away from the main entrance.

I can still remember when I was young / small (under 10 years old, that's over 45 years ago...), you could still easily walk along the waterfalls in Triberg and there was no entrance fee or any payment. You just walked into the forest, like normal people who go hiking. Today, it's all just a tourist attraction and money-making.

"A little hazy": this happens often, the air here is much more humid than in UT. For a good far sight you need to go up on a clear cold winter day, when the water vapour content in the atmosphere is minimized. Then you can see the Mont Blanc in the French Alps from Feldberg, or the Eiger/Mönch/Jungfrau in Switzerland from the Northern Black Forest (above Baden-Baden). - Wildfires are a non-topic in this part of the country.

Wunderbar! I always enjoy your travel videos. I loved most the blossoming rhododendron bushes on your way up the funicular. It takes getting used to Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte because of the alcohol. I like it. Nice to see your daughter being so happy. Perfect age for travelling.

    • @user-sm3xq5ob5d
      @user-sm3xq5ob5d 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I never felt anything about the alcohol. The Kirschwasser is nice IMHO. But the most boring about Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte is the amount of Sahne-layers. Two which are not really like real Sahne and the dough inbetween is too thin to give it much of any taste (chocolate). So the essential part is the one with th cherry layer. The rest is really bland. There are much better cakes.

The "poor" air quality could be just sand from the Sahara. I live in Tyrol - so in a similar region and we had that the last view days. I highly doubt that it is smog but it could also be the pollen from trees.

I really like the style of your travel videos. Somehow you manage to convey the feeling of being "with you" on your trips in an extraordinary way. It's adorable how you blend in small details (like blossoming flowers etc.). I wish I had "your eye" for creating this kind of footage.
P.S.: Schwarzwälder Kirsch-Torte I am not a big fan of myself. For one I detest the artificial sweetness of the 'Belegkirsche' (cherry) that is put on top. And I would prefer a non-alcoholic version (which would not be named the same anymore then). My favorite cake is Bienenstich, but given that it contains loads of almonds you (Tanner at least) is probably far from agreeing with me ^^)

There are different recipes for black forest cake. The cake you had was a very generic industrial one, often sold in more touristy bakerys. The weird taste these cakes often have comes from (cheap) alcohol. Other recipes have no or less alcohol, more cherrys and a better whipped cream. They taste better and more natural.

And in Baden-Baden, you can get a top quality slice of Black Forest cake at a fine cafe, such as Cafe Koenig. There is another one called cafe called Boeckeler nearby. The view from the top of the Merkur (Baden-Baden funicular) - so glad you got to experience it. When you were at Ravenna, you had to walk under the railroad bridge below. Behind is the very beautiful gorge with waterfalls. It is a pity that you have missed the best part of Ravenna.
The front part with cuckoo clocks for sale, restaurant, glass blower shop is actually just a tourist trap.
The Black Forest cake is unfortunately often made so that it drips with cherry brandy, I do not like that at all. But when there is just a slight hint of it I love this cake.
There are some beautiful waterfalls in the Black Forest, the ones in Triberg are the most famous but in my opinion not the most beautiful. And they are definitely the most touristy next to Ravenna.
Hope you will come back one day for more beautiful Black Forest impressions and the neighboring Alsace with Strasbourg, Colmar and the small wine towns is just wonderful.

Crossing the border to Alsace, France won't disappoint you there are so many beautiful villages (and landscape as well) to explore. And you really need to try the Flammkuchen there😉
It looks somewhat like a thin pizza but with sour cream instead of tomato and most of the time bacon, but there are also a lot of other things you can get it with.
You can also get original french cakes once you cross the border. They are quite pricey most of the time, but most of thr time they are worth it.

In the Black Forest you don't have cell phone reception everywhere. A paper map and a compass help. If nothing works, go downhill, follow the watercourse and hope that you will come across a town.
Do not step on wooden trunks lying on the ground, they can roll.
Years ago I drove the B500 from Baden Baden to Waldshut on several days. It's always worth going up the mountains and then into the valleys.

    Beautiful!
And the haziness could be moisture in the air. It's a very typical weather.
In the south there are spots where you can see the Alps from far away (50 km or so), but only if there is a wind from the south, which removes the moisture from the air, because it was blowing over the Alps and rained down on the south side and on the north side the air is dry and warm.
The warm air blowing over the alps is called "Föhn" (like the hair dryer in German, but it's the warm wind, warm because it lost it's moisture going up and came down as dry air - a physics phenomenon, look it up :-).
And in this dry air, you can see the alps from a greater distance than in the typical moist air.
Therefore I guess in analogy that you just had a bit too much moisture in the air at your place to see the things in a greater distance.
Of course it could be air pollution, but then there might be some color in the air like a yellowish brown or grey or something - and moisture typically looks hazy dark blue in the far distance. That's where the name "blue mountains" somewhere in the US comes from, when you just barely can see the mountains in the far distance :-)
As long as chemical factories don't pimp their exhaust to look hazy dark blue, you might be fine ;-)
Or did I see some yellowish haze there... uh oh... maybe...

Tip for the next time.you would have had from Freiburg 40min driving time to Todtnau. There is the longest coaster in Germany. From there then continue to Basel in Switzerland (border triangle). Then it is not far back to Freiburg.

In black forest I can highly recommend the northern area around Bad Wildbad like Kaltenbronn where you have a great view :) this area is part of the Westweg and Mittelweg which you can use as hiking trips. In Bad Wildbad you could visit the local Baumwipfelpfad or the wildline suspension bridge. Regards :)

My office team once did a Toboggan Ride as team event. There was one on a rail like you did and another next to it that was an open slide. Teamleder decided that all of the speed warnings and "slow down" signs were for crybabies and decided to ignore the brakes. He started down the hill first. But then the whole team was at the finish and confused because teamlead was still missing. He fell of the slide early on and had to carry the sled back up to start again. Fortunately he just got some scrapes.

Many thanks again let us joining on your tour. Yes, most of cross bikers use Komoot app. Coming from alaskan, yukon wilderness trip with giant waterfalls, or even the niagra waterfalls you just have to appreciate also the Triberg waterfalls. Erverything has its own beauty. Had to laugh seing Willa touching the water compared to a singaporian lady touching the water of the nearby creek at Hausach, the singaporian lady was yelling cos the water was sooooo cold and Willa just seemed to have fun. Do you already feel its getting more and more crowded at the tourist spots. Once already said you can be happy it isnt that much crowded yet but be aware. Tanner, if your are "freak" (in brackets guess you understand well) of Rutschen(short, different to all I know and you can get a hot ass) than you should not miss the one in the Berchtesgaden Saltmine once you will be in this area. Btw, do you know Badem-Baden has the highest density of millionaires living in that area ? Russian wealthy people know that as I am told by a former russian workmate. Enjoy your exploring trips in Germany. You are reducing your bucketlist very quick. Not much time left for the progress of your garden.

I love the black forest and there are so many more things to discover. As mention in another comment, you have missed the best part of the ravenna gorge. But you can visit this place again. In winter there is a christmas market right under the bridge.
I would recommend the mummelsee to you. From there it is a short walk to the peak of the Hornisgrinde, the highest Mountain in the northern black forest. From there you have awesome views through the rhine valley to the vosges in France. Not far away from the mummelsee you can visit the Gaishöll water falls. There is a nice hike at the falls.
An maybe, if you want to visit Karlsruhe you can find so more interesting spots to visit I can recommend to you: The castle in the center of the city, the ZKM museum of media arts and many more. If you visit Karlsruhe, just drop me a line as I live here. :-)

Don't bother about the Schwarzwälder Torte I don't like it either, too much whipped cream and most of the time too much alcohol. There are much more better cakes germany has to offer. Enjoy your time, there are beautiful castles in Baden-Württemberg too, for example the Hohenzollern Castle or Schloss Lichtenstein.

Wow that Schwarzwälder-kirsch piece of cake looked bad. As usual, there are a lot of tourist traps that sell badly made cake. Usually it is best to ask someone lokal where the best cake is available. They will point you to the few good bakeries. If it is well done, it tastes really good, but it is a difficult cake to get right.
