They couldn't have given the Crown to a better contestant. What most people don't know is back then the photographers used to ignore the girls from the Caribbean, because they were not pretty enough and they didn't fit in to the white man standard of beauty. That year when Penny won Miss BERMUDA" Connie Firth" decided enough is enough and she got Penny and the rest of the other girls from the Caribbean and they decided that they will not participate in the pageant because of Prejudice towards them, of course the Organizers of the Pageant got scared of the scandal it will cause and the negative publicity because the girls from the island were there to make up numbers. When Penny was crowned Miss Universe 1977, she said in an interview, she give "THANKS TO MISS BERMUDA" for getting the girls together to stand up against Discrimination. Many people may have forgotten about this but that's what the black girls endured back in the day but didn't have the courage to do so, until 1977. SO as I tip my hat off to the gorgeous Janelle Penny Commissiong, I also have to give a very special thank you to Miss BERMUDA " Connie Firth"for taking that firm stand so our Beautiful Penny came shining through. @@adiksadiatabs No you racist fuck, she won because she was the best. Something you racist Asians can't comprehend. Sorry, you're not white like you had hoped.
I am an African-American male, and I was 15 or 16 at that time and watched the show live. I was very, very, very happy and proud of Ms. Trinidad! My mother and I looked at each other smiling because we had predicted that Ms. Trinidad would win. However, I do not think that it is fair for individuals to assume that Ms. Austria was racist. It was very rare during that time for a Black Woman to win these types of titles...I actually think that Ms. Austria threw up her hand because she knew that she had lost and was probably happy for Ms. Trinidad! Why do people always choose to side with thinking the worst and negative thoughts? These pageants are very tough, and I do think that most of these women are happy for the ones that do win. And actually, these women at that time were extremely classy and tasteful in how they presented themselves!
I concur with your perspective. I was 13 in 1977, watching the contest with my mother and sister, and I distinctly remember them screaming: "...They finally gave a sista a chance and black beauty is validated, thank you Jesus."! I understood their sentiment well because Beverly Johnson was the only black woman supermodel at that time, and the beauty standard that was perpetuated by the media and the mass culture was that of white females with Eurocentric features. Furthermore, they remembered watching the pageant back in '68 when Curacao's Anne-Marie Braafhied was named first runner up (a milestone then because she was the first woman of African descent to accomplish that feat) and whom many observers felt should've won. They also remembered watching the pageant two years previously in '75 when Haiti's Gerthie David finished as 1st runner up to Finland's Anne-Marie Pohtamo. Finally, I recalled that Austria's Eva Duringer didn't have a great command of the English language. I believe that when Bob Barker said: "...and the first runner up is Miss Austria..." she may have mistakenly misinterpreted that she actually won. And just a bit of trivia. Eva later married one of the judges - Roberto Cavalli. Guarantee we all know for whom he voted.
@@lorenzacoleman690 I Try to give a person the Benefit of Doubt. In my Opinion I Don't think Miss Austria was Racist. What I Truly Believe Due to the Year and Country...Miss Austria jumped the gun. She Thought she was going to be the Winner.
@@RN-DNP a few points: Miss Trinidad & Tobago whilst undeniably pretty and a deserved winner, won in part because her features were in fact very 'Eurocentric' as you termed it. I believe for a while there was a phrase coined: "Barbie doll dipped in chocolate" to describe just that phenomenon. The black supermodel you mentioned also had similar facial qualities, as did other famous black beauties from an earlier time (Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne etc). The other point concerns Miss Austria's reaction. She actually threw up her hands in excited glee BEFORE any country's name was announced. Which means she could NOT have been celebrating for the winner, she did not know who it was. Therefore the only plausible explanation is that she thought she'd won, and why would she have thought that? Because there'd never been a black Miss Universe before, and it never occurred to her that she could or would lose to a black contestant. Make of that what you will....
