Are the Ninja's your parents? Trust me, my parents have made me late to everything. It's the whole reason why I started living on campus, so I wouldn't be late to class. I go home on the weekends though (Cause dining halls suck), and I'm always late for church or monthly parties when my family drives me places. I know I'd piss off an employer constantly being late to my job but really having no control over when my parents decide to leave)

Note: Yes, I'm aware 30/45 != 1.5 - I just brainfarted when doing the animation. I can probably get my mom to dig up my 3rd grade report cards if you guys are worried about me ;)

This should be required training in med school. Surgeons are notoriously bad as estimating time. Ask a surgeon how long till he/she is done (for nursing/anesthesia task timing) and 95% of the time they are off, which backs up the whole ptocess

at this point in my life i totally ignore alarms on my phone... they ring on and on and i just ignore them... and its not like im dead tired there are plenty of nights where i get a solid 8 hours or more... the only time i can wake up on time is if there is something super exciting or super worrisome that has to get done the next morning... but then i dont sleep that well either

    • @TheShamansQuestion
      @TheShamansQuestion 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Same with me. I think it might be that pesky "limbic system", where we're taking concessions too much and going "nah, we'll just take those extra minutes/do this anyway", because deep down we may have given up or stressed with such strict organisation we're burnt out. At least, that's what I suspect has happened with me, and it's been around for about a year now.
BUT it has been getting better. Realigning your priorities helps - and I'm someone that has struggled for years beyond years (young adult) with working out what I like and want to do...

This is a challenge for me. My solution is second alarm clock/timer set X minutes after the first that I have to WALK to. Somehow the act of moving makes it easier to snap out of my perseveration. I also use a Time Timer visual timer when getting ready so I can SEE that I'm going to be late if I don't get moving.

Hi Thomas! Great video! Very useful :). I would like to recommend you a book by Gretchen Rubin "Better than ever". Maybe you already know it. The book is about development of habits, and how new and old habits work for different type of people. The author used her own observation and a lot of literature as a source. I also really enjoyed your book :). After years of struggle with bad habits (being late is one of them) I want to change some things in my life. That's why I read a lot about the topic. Your videos are also very helpful. It's so nice of you that you share your tips with others :).

H K that's the problem - I love my major but always when finals or quizzes are close I just don't want to study after I take the quiz or whatever I'm like why didn't I study it was very easy so I do want to study but when it's time I just don't feel like it

      @hk2336 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh no then u have a procrastination problem...i did too, i knew if i had just glanced at my notes i would have passed the exam but i just kept putting it off...curing procrastination is very hard. You have to be tough on yourself and try hard to defeat ur mind. Try the pomodoro technique or just be truthful: i know im not gonna study so 30 mins before test, i will just review my notes, until then i will enjoy myself and relax by watching video games. Then make urselg review the 30 mins or watever u chose. Also read Wait but why on procrastination. Google it

I am often scrambling to be on time for my Sunday job at a church, which starts at 1 pm, though I can be a little late and no one will care.
To be early, the method that works for me is
    I aim to be early!
I checked Google Maps, which says travel time will be 23 minutes, which means travel time will be at least 30 minutes. So I leave 40 to 45 minutes early.

I pretty much always overestimate the time it takes me to do things, so I'm always early. I get up two hours before I need to take the bus in the morning, but I only take 20-30 minutes to get ready, so I just sit and wait. I also leave my house 20 minutes before the bus leaves, and it only takes me 3 minutes to walk to the bus stop. My parents always told me it was better to be 10 minutes early, than 2 minutes late...and I kinda took that to the extreme. Oh well...

Hello, Thomas! I like your videos a lot and I watch them about a couple of years. They are really helpful and inspiring! And thank you so much for subtitles! It helps me to understand everything more clearly, because I am from Russia and English is not my native language.
So I have a question. I want to share your tips and experience with other Russian guys who does not know English well yet. Can I add Russian subtitles to some of your video? I am not a professional translator, I am a biologist and had English at university and attended additional course, but I have great enthusiasm. So it would be great if you give your permission to do this.

I didn't factor in two schools buses on the 1st day of the school for the neighboring school district (unknown to me) to stop on my route to work, ruining my usual routine every morning. Lost that job. Now I gotta self reflect. Coincidentally enough, it was kids who were late to the bus that held me up even longer. And not just 1 kid but like 5 shortly one after the other appearing from the distance.

Doesn't that study just prove that we cannot imagine a perfect day being any different from our regular ones rather than the other way around? My washer doesn't magically wash faster just because I'm having a perfect day. If I'm having a perfect day, I'm not going to hurry things either.
If anything, an average day _is_ a perfect day, depending on your definition, because on an average day, you're typically not late either.

People who come late have no physical error in the brain. They just are not serious about school etc. They don't care. I have this problem and one solution would be that someone hit me. But no one have ever try. Maybe I have to hit myself because no one will do it for me.
When I was a teenager I used to play games and read newspapers that came 4 a.m so basicly I go to sleep 5 a.m or later. When the newspaper become late I got even more late or at least more tired in the school. Basicly I was a geek with bad numbers XD

You fail to mention the "psychological factors" and it's big impact in causing habitual lateness within individual's... So many studies have shown that habitual lateness or individual's who just can't be on-time for ANYTHING, usually tend to be connected to some deeper issues mentally...

Hmm....last semester, all I did was put all the dates for my homework with different dates (all earlier). I essentially tricked my brain into doing homework before the time it's due. I procrastinate on the date I put in my planner, but I always end up doing the work anyways. This video seems a lot more specific for everyday use lol. I find myself early for getting to college. The random early due dates works for me and my homework is basically the only thing I procrastinate with.

oh I just remembered. I was pretty good at estimating my travel time on bike to school that I was able to arrive there a minute or two before the class starts.
Mind you my school was 3 kilometers away (about 2 miles may be, I don't know) and took about 10 to 15 mins depends on my riding speed.
What I did was that every time I was at my front gate on my bike ready to pedal away, I start my stopwatch and stopped it after I arrived.
I did that every day and got a pretty good average time I needed to go to school.
(below is a bit irrelevant to the video, read at your own cost)
I also was pretty good at estimating when the end class bell would ring down to an accurate count down (5, 4, 3, 2, 1, ring).
Sounds fake, but heck, it happened.
I was known for counting down the end class bell and my classmates often asked "how many seconds left?" And we would count down together.
What I did everyday was I kept my eyes on my watch and look for any pattern in the ring time.
I remember it usually rings at 12:45:22, sometimes it goes down to 20 (same hour and minute), at times it goes up to 40.
It was good ol' times in high school...

I have such bad anxiety about being late to anything that I actually get there way too early. I only live about 5-10 minutes from work but I work in a high-tourist area so I'm always planning for hardcore traffic which is never the case. and get there 45 minutes early. I know some people who need to watch this though, lol.

Hm. This brings an interesting thought in my mind. I think this is also the case with time assigned for completion of tasks, namely, homework. Though I am the first to admit I can and currently am trying to improve my itme management skills, I cannot help but wonder if teachers should actually apply this "fudge ratio" to these tasks. The old excuse of "we also have homework for other classes" seems perfectly sound under this paradigm, beacuse, think about it, if every teacher thinks "This task should only take my students x amount of days", they are surely; unless very experienced and aware of these fallacies, thinking about perfect case scenario, and probably grossly understimating the amount of work required for the tasks outside their specialty, not out of malice, but ignorance, like most human things. Shit, I just found a fucking awesome, science backed excuse for fucking up in college :p

Mi brain is the no planning whatsoever kinda brain. The more alarms and schedules I tried to force myself to follow, the less likely I'd follow what I actually planned. So instead of having an alarm set off every five minutes, I've set it to 30 mins (highest possible). It has worked for me, for I force myself to get an idea of what time it is, without having to rebel against my alarm. So I set my alarms an hour prior (maybe 2 hours), so I can be aware of the time as well as eventually coming to terms that, I have to get up/do something soon.

A few days ago I got a hunch that maybe I'm just very poor at understanding how much time it actually takes me to do the tasks, or how many extra steps are included, or always thinking that the best-case scenario will happen each time. For example just because I made it to work in 5 minutes one day does not mean that that's what I should plan for every day. Thank you so much for this video. It was frustrating for me to deal with my lateness for so long because other videos and lots of people would always just say oh you're late because you're a jerk basically haha and I know that's not true because I hate being late. it's embarrassing and i know I'm also slow or forgetful when getting ready.

Thomas Frank the reason is so that people feel like you're in the same room as them. Matthew Santoro does it, and for me it's kinda off putting yet immersive.
