You are one of the few tutors on YT who I find listenable. Excellent knowledge delivered with clarity and you stick to the point. I have watched nearly all of your lessons. Ableton is fortunate to employ you as a tutor. Thanks.
I was just about to buy Microtonic. (still may) Then I magically came across this video. I forgot all about Ableton's Drum Synth. A very helpful and inspiring tutorial. You got my subscription. Thanks!
I was looking into buying a Roland TR-6s and while doing my research onto the workflow, it clued me into what's so special about those old drum machines, and it struck me that the reason I've never liked 808 sample packs is that the sounds don't often sound so great when they've been tuned to the track etc. Then I found drum synth and used the kick. Absolute game changer.
Thank you for this great tutorial. I have been looking for the info that you cover in the layering part for ages! Most people cover it from the transients and envelope shape perspective but I have not heard anyone mentioning frequency alignment.
Great vid, been watching all of them. Didn't know about the pressing CMD trick to load on the same cell so THX for that! But was unsure as the reason for pressing ALT when drag and dropping?
Holding alt will copy whatever your dragging with the mouse.. so like he did with hihats rather than using automation to change the hihat up he makes 2 and modifies them differently to get some variation
I didn't even realise all these were on Ableton!!! 😳 I've been trying to synthesize decent hi-hats, claps etc on a Moog Grandmother, but struggling to get it to not sound like plain old white noise (which is what it is of course)... I can't get it to sound anything like a hi-hat or clap...
Same here. Been using Operator for all my drums while wondering why Ableton doesn't have built in synth drums like Bitwig does until now! Definitely a gem hidden in plane sight.
Best teacher of Live hands down. Liam O'Mullane is a god.

Hi, Thanks for the great tutorial. What's sounding in the background, it's a sample?
