    A very unfortunate fact:
    The freed slaves who arrived in Liberia, known as Americo-Liberians, didn’t exactly get along with the indigenous people, and vice versa. While they managed to create a constitution and establish a Black-led state, the locals were still left marginalized. In the end, Liberia became a reflection of the U.S.'s manifest destiny rather than a true home for all its people.

      The problem was the people who got there for almost their whole lives had only known the brutality of slavery. So they thought that was the normal way of things. It got so bad at one point the lighter skin African Americans started were referred to as whites and the darker skin indigenous blacks/you know.

    honestly I wonder if the US HADN'T given up Liberia so early and waited until modern decolonization what the outcome would be ? Liberia is seriously underfunded and wouldn't have been high priority in the US' eyes at all, but maybe some investment from the US before peaceful independence later on would have put them in a better place today? Other African countries that decolonized later still find themselves in a similar position though.

  • @notsosilentmajority1

    First, the nation of Liberia should have been independent much sooner. Second, it probably ended up being a good thing for America. This could have been another drain on the US economy, even today. Some of the US's possessions and other places have come at a great cost.

    • @noelleggett5368
      @noelleggett5368 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Between 1821 and 1846, Liberia was most definitely an American colony - being a group of settlements colonised by Americans - specifically, the American Colonization Society - a private company, not the US government. The same is true of almost all the original British colonies in the Americas, which were established by private British companies, not by the British government.
      But you are correct inasmuch as the US government never held legal or military jurisdiction over the colony of Liberia. In contrast, the British government certainly demanded legal and military jurisdiction over almost all the colonies that were established by private British companies throughout the world. (This convention had been established by the early Norman and Plantagenet kings - especially Henry II, whose cousins were busy galavanting around Ireland building castles and attempting to establish kingdoms to rival his own.)

    • @noelleggett5368
      @noelleggett5368 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ And exactly which particular actual facts would you be referring to? This video was pretty detailed with actual facts. If a place outside of the USA is established by, populated by, and run by Americans, then it is an ‘American colony’. In Liberia’s case, it was never a colony of the US government. In the USA, the earliest colonies were established and settled by private companies, such as the Plymouth Company, and the London Virginia Company (which established Virginia). The were settled and run by British companies, so they were called ‘British colonies’. Although they had to function under British law, the British government did not attempt to directly interfere in the running of these endeavours until the revocation of the Charter of Massachusetts and the establishment of the short-lived Dominion of New England in 1680.
      Instead of just denying the facts that I have presented (which anybody can look up and confirm) without attempting a contrary argument, why not present one single fact, or attempt to persuade with a single premise to frame your argument. I don’t even know exactly what I have written that you are claiming is false. They are all simple facts of history and established semantic conventions.

    Sending people born in America (sometimes 2nd or 3rd gen) to a place in Africa where their ancestors weren't from was foolish. You had free American blacks colonizing Africa subjigating the native population. The only way this pipe dream could have worked would be if every freed slave was sent to uninhibited land. @@captainjake7417 The country was run by the American Colonization Society until 1847/8, the neighbouring "Maryland in Africa" was similarily run. After an initial period the ACS in 1828 restricted itself to appointing a (white) governor and vice-governor, while the country was run by a senate and all colored men had suffrage. In practice it was independent from then, this was confirmed in 1848 when Britain refused to recognize Liberian tolls because Liberia was a "private project". The United States ambassador in the UK agreed. This prompted the declaration of independence which was duly recognized by the UK, France, Prussia etc. The US only recognized Liberia in 1862 because of racism (there is a good paper on this and the late recognition also of Haiti). However as confirmed in the diplomatic crisis of 1848, the colony was always a semi-private project and never an "american colony" in the sense of being under american sovereignty. Any ambiguity that existed before was swept away by the diplomatic crisis of 1847/8. Passing american warships at times intervened to help Liberia in it's wars both before and after independence, as did the british at times. This does not make it a colony in my opinion. For shure things could have turned out differently, like with the "Texas Republic", but at no time did the US government in any way act to control Liberia, to my knowledge.
