    What a beautiful plane...

    In the late 1990s this aircraft had been flying around Centennial Airport in Denver all afternoon and finally taxied in for the night. Built in 1952 it was a personal transport for General Franco and then was reconfigured for the movie "Battle of Britain" in 1968. It was then purchased by the CAF in 1977. It was a marvelous sight to see close up and it represented a significant era of aviation history. Parked next to a B-17, it was easy to compare the two foes side by side.

      After the end of the war, access to the German Junkers who built the engines became a problem, and CASA had to find an alternative to the Rolls Royce Merlin 500-20. Later, between 1953 and 19564, Spain bought Rolls-Royce 173 Merlin5 and installed in about 70 He 111 still operating. Some of these devices appeared in the film The Battle of Britain.

  • @greenseaships
    @greenseaships 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Apparently, in a museum in Addison Texas, there is a 111 (CASA 2111?) that is restored to flying condition, but for whatever reason, they do not fly it. This is actually fairly common among warbirds on 'static' display. Kermit Weeks' Fantasy of flight is full of aircraft that can fly but don't.

      +greenseaships
      The Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Addison has one of the CASA 2.111s that was used in the BoB movie. It last flew in 1995 and is said to have some corrosion issues that would need to be fixed if they ever decided to fly it again. I'm afraid that it may be a while before another CASA 2.111 flies. There is the possibility that a couple of existing CASA 2.111 projects could be backdated into flying He-111s at some time in the future, but not anytime soon.

      I'm reading that the wing spars are both steel and aluminum together, which could allow galvanic corrosion between the metals. If this is true for all of the CASAs then it could be a major issue to replace the wing spars for the few that are potential fliers.

    • @greenseaships
      @greenseaships 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +FiveCentsPlease CASAs, you say. Would this affect all those "JU-52s" still flying or just the "Heinkels". If I'm not mistaken, some years ago (like, maybe 20), Sentimental Journey had a problem with her wing spar that had to be replaced. So if the money is there, I don't think it's out of the question. Of course, that's not the only problem...

    • @FiveCentsPlease
      @FiveCentsPlease 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      greenseaships
      Don't know about the Ju-52s. I think the Aluminum/Steel spar issue is a construction feature of all the CASA 2.1111s, so similar to the B-17 spar issue that affected all of them I believe, new spars could be needed to extend the flying time of the airframe.

    Yesterday I got to sit in the pilot seat of a Heinkle 111 bomber in Texas. It also was a CASA and has not flown in 15 years. She probably never will again. I actually sat in the pilot seat and looked out thru that glass bubble and imagined the Battle of Britain. To a history lover this was a BIG thrill. I wish I could share a photo. (note to greenseeships below - no the Addison bird has decay inside the wings and will not fly again. She did fly in to that airport 15 years ago, but nothing since then.) This plane is complete but worn inside. The external paint is nice (light blue) and it certainly could be displayed. Possible problem - it has that naughty German mark painted on the tail. Not sure who did that. Apparently this plane was at one point used to tow gunnery targets. I found a bar labeled 'target tow release lever'.

    • @FiveCentsPlease
      @FiveCentsPlease 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James Davis It is CASA 2.1111 #155. The wing spars are both aluminum and steel and all examples are going to suffer from galvanic corrosion between the two metals. Another flying example will likely need a very expensive wing spar replacement.

    In terms of maintenance the engine is very easy to find because RR Merlin engine was made In the United States as Packard Merlin for the F-51 Mustang WW2 Korean War era planes. Basically a F-51 engine is needed to keep this he-111 CASA S211 going

    • @FiveCentsPlease

      + @EpicThe112 Crashed in 2003, from engine failure. They lost an engine on final and went down in rough terrain. The engines were too badly damaged to determine the exact cause.

    in 1992, my wife & I went to the Champlin Fighter Museum in Ariz. This aircraft was sitting on the ramp with the door open. We walked up and hollered in and were welcomed with a come aboard. We did and spent a good deal of time talking to the mech. The plane had a peculiar smell to it along with everything else. 10 years later it was a pile of rubbish in Wyoming.RIP

      Totally agreed, the spanish post war production planes are just awful looking with their merlin engines.

    • @FiveCentsPlease
      @FiveCentsPlease 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Arnaud N None flying now since this one was lost in a fatal crash some years back. Other static examples exist but nothing presently capable of flight. There is an He-111 restoration for possible flight lurking in the shadows somewhere in Europe and the Flying Heritage Museum has another CASA example in storage. It's a pity that this substantially intact example pulled from a lake in Norway will not be restored for flight, but instead is being restored for a German museum. ju88.net/recovery/he111/he111fmu.JPG

    Is this the airplane that crashed in 2003? I can't find any footage of that. It was supposedly the last flying original heinkel he-111

    • @FiveCentsPlease
      @FiveCentsPlease 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +BRS RC It was not an original He-111, but a Spanish-built CASA. It did crash and was destroyed in 2003. No other CASA are airworthy at this time. No He-111s are airworthy although there is a slow project that plans to fly some day.

    • @brsrc759
      @brsrc759 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FiveCentsPlease do you know if there is any footage of the 2003 crash?

    • @FiveCentsPlease
      @FiveCentsPlease 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +BRS RC I have never seen any film of the crash. It did not go down during a display flight. They were just flying into Cheyenne, Wyoming and lost an engine on final. The pilot had to put it down on rough terrain and the plane collided with a structure. It was destroyed by post-crash fire. As I understand it, to get another CASA or Heinkel in the air would need an expensive new wing spar because they are all having galvanic corrosion issues with age. There is a slow He-111 project somewhere in Europe that has been building to fly for about 20 year now, but there isn't much info about it.
