Idk I find it refreshing that the main girl has this chronic illness, and her bond with her family is really endearing. There are moments that made me cry which rarely happens when I watch dramas. I also don’t see a problem with Li Yitong’s acting, but then again I’m just a casual viewer
I actually really like this drama in term of solving crime case. Too me the acting is good. I think it was funny but not overly dramatic in term of their comedy. I like the fact she has this illness and connection with main lead.
I agree with you! I find it quite refreshing even though the arrogant, domineering prince character gets overplayed. I feel like BWJ did the pretty well, given his personality actual personality. And the storyline was pretty humorous being an investigative crime/ romcom drama.
Li YiTong is a very versatile and an amazing actor. I loved her acting in Bloody Romance & the condor heroes. She's a great talent, irrespective of any ratings I look forward to watching this drama.
Bi Wenjun is too cute and has a great chemistry with Li Yitong. I'm enjoying this drama just because of their interactions and bickering. It reminds me of classic paranormal romances I used to like to read years ago. ❤️
I agree with the plot points - I think I'm still watching this on and off because of the lack of anything else better to watch right now. The FL was at least capable, which was a plus, and the chemistry between the leads was good. I absolutely loved the godfather - he was a fab character (and actor) - and his relationship with the FL.
Now I am watching the delicious short dramas like "Cheng Xi's song" subbed on dailymotion or "Dong lan xue" on youtube. Both ongoing but so far I find them much better. Those Tik Tok short dramas pairs got much fire and sparks than those boring OTP in standard more expensive dramas.
Action scene is way better than the recent one I watched. Also the next case with the opera singer was really good too and had me crying😢. But yep, the case really drags. And they’re just filler as they’re almost not relevant to the main story. I’m wanting this with starry lovers but to be honest I like this than starry. Second half of the starry lovers gets really weird.

I'm enjoying this drama a lot. Although I clearly can hear a bit of DFQC when Bi Wen Jun's character speaks, but I can tell the dubbing actor tried really hard to sound different. It's just I rewatched LBFAD too many times))). I love the heroine-finally a "weak" FL is not annoying at all). I should confess the leads are both among actors I really love and enjoy watching, so I'm totally "in" here. Looking forward to new episodes)
Same, I just like both the leads. The synopsis itself would not have drawn me in, since I am not into detective stories, but I just like seeing them on my screen and with how it's going this is a great bedtime drama, you can do your evening routine and not be completely lost if you missed a scene while applying cream. To me it's a bonus that the dubber is the same as DFQC, I really liked his deep tones and since I read subtitles I don't get an auditory attachment to voices as much.
Honestly the very short drama "Cheng Xi's song" or "Dong Lan Xue" are much better than the standard dramas that recently aired. At least in those short Tik Tok dramas Female leads are not written like clumsy children.
Wow, I totally agree with what you said about acting. Watching dramas (in general), I thought I was the only one who would notice these details. Just because an actors opens their mouth to make a shocked expression doesn’t always mean they’re conveying it properly or that the acting itself is actually good.
Gotta add here, sitting up suddenly after the scariest nightmares, is something that happens to me often. It’s not so much about “sitting”, it’s usually in my dream I tried to stop someone from falling off a cliff etc, and the absolute fear and rushed movement wakes me up and I have moved in my sleep. It’s possibly genetic, lacking certain sleep hormones ? as my kids also move when they sleep. My daughters legs really “run” when she runs in her dreams.
Thank you for your review. I’ve been trying to find other peoples thoughts and viewpoints on this drama given it was an unexpected pairing and not so high-budget film. I by chance came upon this gem of a series on accident. I’ve heard of Under the Power, I’ve Fallen For you, Ancient Detective, Maiden Holmes etc…. still have yet to finish them but I managed to finish this twice because I like this drama so much. I agree with you on the dubbing of HanZheng, I didn’t like it as much. LYTs over exaggerated acting is part of the humor in this drama. As for the cases, they are all connected because of the two races and you only find that out if you watch till the end. The sexual assault case, the painting case and Godfather Hu death were by far my favorite. As far as the intentional touching goes, it cracked me up. I don’t think it was forced it was Jiu’er naivety and curiosity of hrm… why do I feel this sense of warmth/joy from this person. So she kept testing it, soon she wanted to keep him close to her because of this feeling. And wow, I didn’t know that there is an anti-Japanese sentiment in China due to conflict in the past. But I totally see how the costumes can be interpreted as more Japanese than Chinese. So I agree, that the research on this part feel through. Then again, like you mentioned it’s fictional. All in all, WOACN was super enjoyable for me. I support both lead actors and supporting cast. Directors did a great job, script may just need to be more refined and tweaked. To end my rant, the OST is also great to listen to its on repeat for me.

I agree. It’s just a fun drama to watch. I put her character as very energetic. At least they have chemistry and they make me laugh. This drama would have been great if she did tone down the over acting and the plot was more in-depth in the cases. Also the other policemen, being serious policemen instead of goofy characters. It’s a light hearted drama and not a serious one. As for the costumes, because I am a foreigner, I miss any references to other cultures. What I don’t understand is why Chinese get so offended if other cultures are used? I really feel for the costumes people. If the only thing they can work with is Chinese history or therefore, then they are very limited. Even Devil and Fairy got reprimanded for the ugly head pieces because they looked plastic; they were plastic, but at least they weren’t from another culture. Maybe they should have added a big bow on the hair piece. Instead of Japanese, we can go western. Lol

I know. I have heard about it. I just feel that the costuming department is having a hard time especially with dramas in a more magical era. As I stated before that even Fairy and Devil got criticized. China is rich and diverse country, they should be able to mix and match with a creative license to come up with some costumes; it’s not a period piece. Also, since it is a sore subject between nations then the costuming department should really check and make sure everything is ok. Just a thought, because china is so big with different cultures, how do we really know that head piece or something similar to it is not part of Chinese past? It might not be Japanese at all. Some costumer found it in one of their books of an ancient china tribe and decided to make something like it. Who knows. I am just throwing out what if and random scenarios because I like to question everything.

I am actually enjoying this one, by EP 12 now, which surprises even me, because I don't usually like detective stories, but came because I have a craving for Bi Wen Jun on my screen and love Li Yitong since Dear Missy. I especially love the storyline of the two "races" of people against each other in the city. It feels like a subtle criticism of current affairs, in many Chinese cities I am sure, but can also be applied to any place with a growing foreign population. It really caught the many subtle layers of discrimination on both sides, and people who try to lobby for one side or the other. And how one, very personal, negative interaction with a person from the other side gets people riled up more than all the good things. Even the Qi people getting only the labour jobs, having their own underground markets and the not so subtle jabs when LYT enters these spaces are so true to life. The way they eat in that restaurant made me laugh, him trying to scare her with his "ethnic food". I volunteer with a lot of refugee organizations here in Europe, and I can relate. I think this writer took inspiration from the situation of country workers in Chinese metropolis, with the permission tags they need etc.? But people are the same everywhere...
I actually enjoyed this drama. it was light and funny . the fantasy part made it even more enjoyable. i agree with you but sincerely i had a great time watching it. I understand very well the problematic part of the costume but esthetically I found them nice ( they were different, goes nice with the "fantasy" side of the story)
actually, I really love li yitong, she's great in many of her dramas, but her "tao lu" here is one of the reason why I'm skipping this one 😔😔 it's just weird, I saw what she can do in the knockout, royal nirvana, bloody romance ... but seeing her acting ridiculous and over is just something I don't wanna do

Everyone has their own subcategory of dramas. I’ve watched it 5xs and still find the storyline refreshing, funny, warm and cute. I’ve dropped other popular dramas before or fast forwarded through some.
I was just bingeing through your old videos, of jin yong and jiang hu.... Will check out this video too , although I'm not that interested in this drama. I was watching Love Like The Galaxy but dropped it at ep 27. Will mostly continue CLJ and Starry Love, which I'd also put on hold. i've only started watching it because her illness felt like the fantasy version of my illness. i've got it constantly cold and at moments can be weak and sleepy to the point of falling asleep like a narcoleptic. (the doctor doesnt really know why exactly, but it doesnt seem life threatening, just annoying). i liked it that my now boyfriend for already 20 years now, is always warm and comforting. for some reason i always feel better in close contact with him, even though we are very different in character, in beliefs, in viewpoints and can annoy eachother (like an old married couple, bickering about unimportant stuff). it's entertaining to me to see my illness being part of a plot of a fantasy. besides that, i'm actually surprisingly entertained by this drama, i mostly see it as a comedy as the detective part is a little too unconvincing at times. and i take the bad acting as part of the comedy. %-)
Your comment really just warmed my heart a little. I totally relate to the FL as well, I get cold easily and very faint when my blood sugar drops. I have had to go on a low-GI diet, even though having my husband feed me and cuddle me also helps. 😁
I enjoyed this drama so much, and I know it's not a masterpice, sometimes masterpices bored me to death. So I loved this one. The couple is beautiful, cute and funny. All the guys are very handsome and the plot it's Ok, what's not to like. So watch this lovely and romantic drama.
I'm liking this so far (ep30). It's not trying to be anything. Sometimes you need abit silliness especially after heavy dramas. To me, the mains do have cp, actually wished they showed more of them as a couple. And the cases are different and poignant. Apart from one, they didn't drag for me, PLUS we get good martial arts in this...I hope it wraps up well.
Thanks for the review but I am enjoying it. I have watched to episode 26 and I think you may be giving it up too soon. I am watching it not so much for the cases as for the truth about her father's death, his missing friend and why she has this illness. I think there is a secret here that will be divulged later, but if not, then I will agree with you and it would be a very dissatisfying ending for me. I agree with you that the painters case was a good one and very poignant. I also agree with you that the FL acting is over the top at times and she seems to have more chemistry with the human prince because of it. Still, I look forward to each episode.
Oh, I TOTALLY agree about Li Yi Tong's bizarre acting in this drama - it is miles away in quality from anything else she's done. I wanted to see the drama largely because she has been a favorite actress of mine and Whoa! What a shock to see her mumbling, pouting, whiny take of this current character! Bi Wen Jun, I've only seen one other thing he's done, that time in a supporting role, but I was very pleasantly surprised by his acting in this drama. True, he's dubbed, but his acting style is naturalistic and quite elegant in my opinion. Li Yi Tong - wow... what happened??
Finally!!! I have been looking forward to your review of this drama ever since I first watched its first 3 episodes. I stopped at ep 4 since I can't bring myself to endure Li Yitong's overdramatic act. Moreover, the setup of her character doesn't sit well with me... I truly was hoping for it to be interesting since it has mystery-solving elements (didnt need to be as interesting as Strange tales) but it didn't even touch the level of being interesting.... I forgot to mention that Li Yitong's voice in this drama is super cringe... If that's her effort of trying to be cute then it's a complete failure to me.
I'm enjoying this drama...although as a Brit, even I noticed some of the Japanese elements in certain costumes. It doesn't bother me, but in light of the fuss in previous drama's I can see that it could cause issues. The 'battery' thing is unnecessary. I am sure that a good script writer would have been able to find another reason to draw them together. All that said, I am still liking it.
Hi and thank you! I agree with you that the mix of hanfu and kimono looks confusing and silly though in this particular project it's not so obvious for a Western viewer. Unfortunaterly the clothes are not the only silly thing in this drama... Probably this type of dramas would be better called not period, but costume dramas as they are not meant to be historically authentic. Take, for example, Impress Lau or any film from the Novoland series. Since the setting is not supposed to be Chinese then the clothes of the characters are made to imitate general Oriental look.
I agree with many things you said... One thing I disagree with , and that may just be my ignorance, is your criticism of the costuming.. As I watched, I felt that it was interesting that this drama was trying to create a world out of time and place somewhat. Of course the people speak Chinese in it, it's made in China, for Chinese audiences.. But when I watch a film like, say, Blade Runner, the costuming is different than anything we wear, and there are multi national influences in it's costume and set design, but they are speaking English.. because it was made in an English speaking country for English speaking people. They are creating something artistic, someone's vision..The unusual costuming is fun for me to see (ep the hats) , it doesn't have to adhere to a time or place. I think it may be a cultural thing that I don't understand why this would be looked down on.

I have similar feeling about the drama as AvenueX but I will be continuing till the end. The cases takes too much time to solve and not much happens within the episodes which would need that much time to solve the cases. And the first case was not even solved completely before they progressed to the second one. Second and third had closure. There are more filler material than original content. Another thing that bothers me is that the drama is divided into two parts. Half of the characters act normally or seriously as they should in a crime fiction drama while the other half acts as if they are in a comedy drama. It feels like two separate directors shot different scenes and combined them together. Also the main underlying story is extremely slow. 2/3 of the drama is done and we still don't anything about Muyan's backstory.
The best part of this drama is the mystery solving. The worst part is the over dramatic acting lol. When they're serious i really like them, they're actually good characters, but the goofy side is just felt too cartoon-ish. Not all the comedy side is bad but they tend to took it too far it felt more irritating than funny. But for me overall it's nice drama to past the time by, no need to use your brain too much lol

As a Chinese myself, I don't dwell on the influence of other cultures depicted in a show. Let's remember, it's a fictional drama, not striving to be a historical drama. We're in 2023 and not 1973, China has transformed into a more open society. Criticizing the style of a hairpin as Japanese feels a bit absurd. I'd encourage people to watch the first couple of episodes and form your own opinions.
I didn’t like Li Yitong’s acting either. Dropped it after 10 episodes. I just think she’s at the point of her career she needs to become a serious actress. This was way too immature a character for my mental image of her status in c-dramaland. Yeah, and because the ML is acting like a normal person, the contrast is very jarring.
I like Li Y Tong as an actress in general but I’d have to agree with your review on her acting. The guy is the better actor. I just couldn’t stand her acting. Plus the cases took too long.
I thought everything AvenueX said was valid, however, I feel that there are reasons the production team did what she says she dislikes. Li Yi Tong overacts because it makes her ditzy. This matches the FL more with the ML because even though he's 60 yrs old, he does act very childish, especially when he gets jealous, and even though she's very smart, she's very childish as well. Next, Bi Wen Jun's acting is very subtle, yes, but I feel that's because it fits his character. The ML's a prince who just wants to find his friend, while the bureau keeps asking him to do things that are beneath his status and at the same time slander his friend's reputation. You get the feeling this guy just wants to grab his friend and go home and forget about everyone else because his under acting makes his character seem like he doesn't care. This totally fits together. BUT if you have a character who is all IDC and another one who gets over the top excited it may look like the one will just annoy the other until they go home, so you NEED something as forced as he's her tonic to remind the audience and the FL that he's not just there for his friend, but he goes along with bureau's plans and sticks around also because he cares for her. I also think that the script has a lot more dialogue that makes sense along with the actions of the characters than SO many other C-dramas out there. That's one of the main reasons I love this one. Also, I thought the martial arts in this drama were pretty cool.

Thank you for this review, I’m more convinced that I really don’t like this show even if it’s iQiyi. 😂 AvenueX was being kind in 6:00 - I think Li Yi Tong is basically MISCAST for the role. The producers/director was probably looking for the 20ish traffic cute actress for the role but they just had to go with LYT. Which is why her acting was so unnatural even in the teasers, mimicking how the younger actresses will act but it suits them and not her. Add to the fact that we already heard and saw her beautiful, sophisticated voice as Si Ming in LBFAD. Her role here is like a complete downgrade. A similar iqiyi drama with forced skinship is Hello There but it works for the actress because she looks cute rather than mature. Also the dubbing doesn’t fit LYT. BTW, I wonder how old the FL is because if she isn’t a teenager in human age then her actions are really cartoonish.
LYT, is 32 years young, actually dubbed it herself and found that other dubbers couldn’t do the cute voice she was looking for. And I saw her acting as being the little energetic girl inside of her, quite cute. Plus, this drama was rather humorous than the serious crime drama people are looking for. But I definitely respect your view.
I hate that they killed off the godfather and the scene of the actor that you like lying with his love is quite poignant. My favorite scene, too. Thank you.
There should be a default for this streaming platforms to choose a dub or not. The dub just ruins this good show. Especially the female leads voice is 😰. Listening with my headphones on is really not a good experience.
Usually I enjoy watching detective drama, but I skip this one for sure, imo it takes too long to solved 1 case and yes I can’t watch the FL acting any longer….

I don’t think it was forced it was Jiu’er naivety and curiosity of hrm… why do I feel this sense of warmth/joy from this person. So she kept testing it, soon she wanted to keep him close to her because of this feeling.
And wow, I didn’t know that there is an anti-Japanese sentiment in China due to conflict in the past. But I totally see how the costumes can be interpreted as more Japanese than Chinese. So I agree, that the research on this part feel through. Then again, like you mentioned it’s fictional.
All in all, WOACN was super enjoyable for me. I support both lead actors and supporting cast. Directors did a great job, script may just need to be more refined and tweaked. To end my rant, the OST is also great to listen to its on repeat for me.

I agree. I’m a big fan of LYT and I found it quite refreshing she was trying a bubbly, clever, cute girl. To her I say persevere on because only taking on new characters and good scripts will she become better and better.

I agree. It’s just a fun drama to watch. I put her character as very energetic. At least they have chemistry and they make me laugh. This drama would have been great if she did tone down the over acting and the plot was more in-depth in the cases. Also the other policemen, being serious policemen instead of goofy characters. It’s a light hearted drama and not a serious one.
As for the costumes, because I am a foreigner, I miss any references to other cultures. What I don’t understand is why Chinese get so offended if other cultures are used? I really feel for the costumes people. If the only thing they can work with is Chinese history or therefore, then they are very limited. Even Devil and Fairy got reprimanded for the ugly head pieces because they looked plastic; they were plastic, but at least they weren’t from another culture. Maybe they should have added a big bow on the hair piece. Instead of Japanese, we can go western. Lol
It's a difficult historical matter when it comes to China-Japan relationship through the years. I wonder if you heard about Chinese actor Zhan ZheHan and his story.
I know. I have heard about it. I just feel that the costuming department is having a hard time especially with dramas in a more magical era. As I stated before that even Fairy and Devil got criticized. China is rich and diverse country, they should be able to mix and match with a creative license to come up with some costumes; it’s not a period piece. Also, since it is a sore subject between nations then the costuming department should really check and make sure everything is ok.
Just a thought, because china is so big with different cultures, how do we really know that head piece or something similar to it is not part of Chinese past? It might not be Japanese at all. Some costumer found it in one of their books of an ancient china tribe and decided to make something like it. Who knows. I am just throwing out what if and random scenarios because I like to question everything.

I am actually enjoying this one, by EP 12 now, which surprises even me, because I don't usually like detective stories, but came because I have a craving for Bi Wen Jun on my screen and love Li Yitong since Dear Missy.
I especially love the storyline of the two "races" of people against each other in the city. It feels like a subtle criticism of current affairs, in many Chinese cities I am sure, but can also be applied to any place with a growing foreign population. It really caught the many subtle layers of discrimination on both sides, and people who try to lobby for one side or the other. And how one, very personal, negative interaction with a person from the other side gets people riled up more than all the good things. Even the Qi people getting only the labour jobs, having their own underground markets and the not so subtle jabs when LYT enters these spaces are so true to life. The way they eat in that restaurant made me laugh, him trying to scare her with his "ethnic food". I volunteer with a lot of refugee organizations here in Europe, and I can relate. I think this writer took inspiration from the situation of country workers in Chinese metropolis, with the permission tags they need etc.? But people are the same everywhere...
I actually enjoyed this drama. it was light and funny . the fantasy part made it even more enjoyable. i agree with you but sincerely i had a great time watching it. I understand very well the problematic part of the costume but esthetically I found them nice ( they were different, goes nice with the "fantasy" side of the story)
actually, I really love li yitong, she's great in many of her dramas, but her "tao lu" here is one of the reason why I'm skipping this one 😔😔 it's just weird, I saw what she can do in the knockout, royal nirvana, bloody romance ... but seeing her acting ridiculous and over is just something I don't wanna do

Everyone has their own subcategory of dramas. I’ve watched it 5xs and still find the storyline refreshing, funny, warm and cute. I’ve dropped other popular dramas before or fast forwarded through some.

I love it and the plot is too good
i've only started watching it because her illness felt like the fantasy version of my illness. i've got it constantly cold and at moments can be weak and sleepy to the point of falling asleep like a narcoleptic. (the doctor doesnt really know why exactly, but it doesnt seem life threatening, just annoying). i liked it that my now boyfriend for already 20 years now, is always warm and comforting. for some reason i always feel better in close contact with him, even though we are very different in character, in beliefs, in viewpoints and can annoy eachother (like an old married couple, bickering about unimportant stuff).
it's entertaining to me to see my illness being part of a plot of a fantasy.
besides that, i'm actually surprisingly entertained by this drama, i mostly see it as a comedy as the detective part is a little too unconvincing at times. and i take the bad acting as part of the comedy. %-)
Your comment really just warmed my heart a little. I totally relate to the FL as well, I get cold easily and very faint when my blood sugar drops. I have had to go on a low-GI diet, even though having my husband feed me and cuddle me also helps. 😁

I enjoyed this drama so much, and I know it's not a masterpice, sometimes masterpices bored me to death. So I loved this one. The couple is beautiful, cute and funny. All the guys are very handsome and the plot it's Ok, what's not to like. So watch this lovely and romantic drama.
I'm liking this so far (ep30). It's not trying to be anything. Sometimes you need abit silliness especially after heavy dramas. To me, the mains do have cp, actually wished they showed more of them as a couple. And the cases are different and poignant. Apart from one, they didn't drag for me, PLUS we get good martial arts in this...I hope it wraps up well.

Thanks for the review but I am enjoying it. I have watched to episode 26 and I think you may be giving it up too soon. I am watching it not so much for the cases as for the truth about her father's death, his missing friend and why she has this illness. I think there is a secret here that will be divulged later, but if not, then I will agree with you and it would be a very dissatisfying ending for me. I agree with you that the painters case was a good one and very poignant. I also agree with you that the FL acting is over the top at times and she seems to have more chemistry with the human prince because of it. Still, I look forward to each episode.

Oh, I TOTALLY agree about Li Yi Tong's bizarre acting in this drama - it is miles away in quality from anything else she's done. I wanted to see the drama largely because she has been a favorite actress of mine and Whoa! What a shock to see her mumbling, pouting, whiny take of this current character! Bi Wen Jun, I've only seen one other thing he's done, that time in a supporting role, but I was very pleasantly surprised by his acting in this drama. True, he's dubbed, but his acting style is naturalistic and quite elegant in my opinion. Li Yi Tong - wow... what happened??
Finally!!! I have been looking forward to your review of this drama ever since I first watched its first 3 episodes. I stopped at ep 4 since I can't bring myself to endure Li Yitong's overdramatic act. Moreover, the setup of her character doesn't sit well with me... I truly was hoping for it to be interesting since it has mystery-solving elements (didnt need to be as interesting as Strange tales) but it didn't even touch the level of being interesting....
I forgot to mention that Li Yitong's voice in this drama is super cringe... If that's her effort of trying to be cute then it's a complete failure to me.

I'm enjoying this drama...although as a Brit, even I noticed some of the Japanese elements in certain costumes. It doesn't bother me, but in light of the fuss in previous drama's I can see that it could cause issues. The 'battery' thing is unnecessary. I am sure that a good script writer would have been able to find another reason to draw them together. All that said, I am still liking it.

I agree with you that the mix of hanfu and kimono looks confusing and silly though in this particular project it's not so obvious for a Western viewer. Unfortunaterly the clothes are not the only silly thing in this drama... Probably this type of dramas would be better called not period, but costume dramas as they are not meant to be historically authentic. Take, for example, Impress Lau or any film from the Novoland series. Since the setting is not supposed to be Chinese then the clothes of the characters are made to imitate general Oriental look.

I agree with many things you said... One thing I disagree with , and that may just be my ignorance, is your criticism of the costuming.. As I watched, I felt that it was interesting that this drama was trying to create a world out of time and place somewhat. Of course the people speak Chinese in it, it's made in China, for Chinese audiences.. But when I watch a film like, say, Blade Runner, the costuming is different than anything we wear, and there are multi national influences in it's costume and set design, but they are speaking English.. because it was made in an English speaking country for English speaking people. They are creating something artistic, someone's vision..The unusual costuming is fun for me to see (ep the hats) , it doesn't have to adhere to a time or place. I think it may be a cultural thing that I don't understand why this would be looked down on.

I have similar feeling about the drama as AvenueX but I will be continuing till the end. The cases takes too much time to solve and not much happens within the episodes which would need that much time to solve the cases. And the first case was not even solved completely before they progressed to the second one. Second and third had closure. There are more filler material than original content. Another thing that bothers me is that the drama is divided into two parts. Half of the characters act normally or seriously as they should in a crime fiction drama while the other half acts as if they are in a comedy drama. It feels like two separate directors shot different scenes and combined them together. Also the main underlying story is extremely slow. 2/3 of the drama is done and we still don't anything about Muyan's backstory.
Amazing review, tbh, the only reson I lasted 9 episodes is because of the raw but handsome look of Bi Wenjun...
The best part of this drama is the mystery solving. The worst part is the over dramatic acting lol. When they're serious i really like them, they're actually good characters, but the goofy side is just felt too cartoon-ish. Not all the comedy side is bad but they tend to took it too far it felt more irritating than funny. But for me overall it's nice drama to past the time by, no need to use your brain too much lol

As a Chinese myself, I don't dwell on the influence of other cultures depicted in a show. Let's remember, it's a fictional drama, not striving to be a historical drama. We're in 2023 and not 1973, China has transformed into a more open society. Criticizing the style of a hairpin as Japanese feels a bit absurd. I'd encourage people to watch the first couple of episodes and form your own opinions.
I didn’t like Li Yitong’s acting either. Dropped it after 10 episodes. I just think she’s at the point of her career she needs to become a serious actress. This was way too immature a character for my mental image of her status in c-dramaland. Yeah, and because the ML is acting like a normal person, the contrast is very jarring.

I like Li Y Tong as an actress in general but I’d have to agree with your review on her acting. The guy is the better actor. I just couldn’t stand her acting. Plus the cases took too long.
I thought everything AvenueX said was valid, however, I feel that there are reasons the production team did what she says she dislikes. Li Yi Tong overacts because it makes her ditzy. This matches the FL more with the ML because even though he's 60 yrs old, he does act very childish, especially when he gets jealous, and even though she's very smart, she's very childish as well. Next, Bi Wen Jun's acting is very subtle, yes, but I feel that's because it fits his character. The ML's a prince who just wants to find his friend, while the bureau keeps asking him to do things that are beneath his status and at the same time slander his friend's reputation. You get the feeling this guy just wants to grab his friend and go home and forget about everyone else because his under acting makes his character seem like he doesn't care. This totally fits together. BUT if you have a character who is all IDC and another one who gets over the top excited it may look like the one will just annoy the other until they go home, so you NEED something as forced as he's her tonic to remind the audience and the FL that he's not just there for his friend, but he goes along with bureau's plans and sticks around also because he cares for her. I also think that the script has a lot more dialogue that makes sense along with the actions of the characters than SO many other C-dramas out there. That's one of the main reasons I love this one. Also, I thought the martial arts in this drama were pretty cool.

the main female is a cop so they maybe should have portrayed her as a martial arts expert.
I think the idea here is that she uses her brain as her "martial art", and on the contrary she is physically weak.

Thank you for this review, I’m more convinced that I really don’t like this show even if it’s iQiyi. 😂 AvenueX was being kind in 6:00 - I think Li Yi Tong is basically MISCAST for the role. The producers/director was probably looking for the 20ish traffic cute actress for the role but they just had to go with LYT. Which is why her acting was so unnatural even in the teasers, mimicking how the younger actresses will act but it suits them and not her. Add to the fact that we already heard and saw her beautiful, sophisticated voice as Si Ming in LBFAD. Her role here is like a complete downgrade. A similar iqiyi drama with forced skinship is Hello There but it works for the actress because she looks cute rather than mature. Also the dubbing doesn’t fit LYT. BTW, I wonder how old the FL is because if she isn’t a teenager in human age then her actions are really cartoonish.
LYT, is 32 years young, actually dubbed it herself and found that other dubbers couldn’t do the cute voice she was looking for. And I saw her acting as being the little energetic girl inside of her, quite cute. Plus, this drama was rather humorous than the serious crime drama people are looking for. But I definitely respect your view.
I hate that they killed off the godfather and the scene of the actor that you like lying with his love is quite poignant. My favorite scene, too. Thank you.
There should be a default for this streaming platforms to choose a dub or not. The dub just ruins this good show. Especially the female leads voice is 😰. Listening with my headphones on is really not a good experience.

I think the plot is trying to be mysteriously funny and getting absolutely ridiculous. The only good thing about this drama is li yitong’s acting and look.
