+SpartiateHero This just in, the original amiga game is going to be included on the PS4 version. You also can unlock the ability to play the whole new game with the David Whittaker soundtrack.
I always thought this would make a great story for a movie. A man snatched from his family, turned into a monster, watches his father die by his hand, and turns on his creator.
This game was created from some of the biggest drug trips XD But really, a game that showed how awesome the Amiga could be and the soundtrack is kick ass.
Seeing this game completed, I can finally put a piece of my mind to rest. I remember this was super hard, but you make it look like a walk in the park :)
It's not hard per se. It's just so shitty game design that it's near impossible to understand what must be done. There are several things required for opening certain doors/beating certain bosses that you can't go back to get, resulting in a soft lock.
@Steven Ross-watt This isn't even about that. Shadow of the beast is the epitome of retarded design. A lot of stuff required to beat it has no explanation or hints.
@@renatoramos8834 I played it when I was a teenager, and I don't remember having had much trouble understanding what needed to be done. The difficulty, in my opinion, was to avoid the enemies.

According to the remake, the foot belongs to "The Leviathan", which is a super huge body that Maletoth uses to crush his foes and showcases his magic talents. Aarbron, once again, is vastly more powerful though. After it's destroyed, Maletoth basically says "Oh, damn you're strong, hey, wanna be human? I can make you human again." and Aarbron is like "Okay, do it."
I just wanted to thank my older brother for allowing me to have such an amazing gaming experience as a kid. So many fond memories of 80s and 90s gaming 🙂
The storyline in the manual says you are turned to a warrior beast servant by magic as a child, see your father die years later and that returns your memory, then you go on a revenge rampage 80s style. Second best part of the game.
This game really showcased what the Commodore Amiga was capable of. Very hard game, with some of the strangest but most interesting mythos ever! This is like the definitive edition, but I love the PC Engine Turbo Duo version because of the CD soundtrack! The music and graphics were far beyond their time.
I'm kinda saddened "Inside the Tree" doesn't get much love in music/remixing communities. I'm also surprised this has gotten no reboot or HD re-release.
I thought this game was taking itself seriously, and then it throws in random jet engines, gives you a laser gun and a jetpack and I get the feeling the game is basically trolling at that point, before taking the stuff away and putting you back in the game it was making itself out to be.
8:32, even the psygnosis logo is an enemy here? i have the master system version but i cannot even get to the first stage because how delayed the controls are and because how fast the main character runs in that version
I know that feeling, I struggled with this in my childhood. I remember exchanging the game with a friend for a SMS Cool Spot. He was mad once he realized what he did.
It seems like they dumped every frigging sprite they made :D At least loads of different enemies. And strenght ups for dude who already one kills everything :D
Amazing play through.. Shadow of the Beast is the basis of my username, Beastifus. This was one of the most difficult games I've ever played...I only got halfway apparently!! Thanks for the video, my knuckles were white the whole time!
MAN that was weird. I mean, i gather it was an alien world and you are a badass tribal alien who punches anything to death, but there are blimps in the sky, and there is a gun underground and a jetpack that you know how to use and fits you, then you're back to being tribal and punching stuff and... I really don't understand much of anything. "The beast" was an ugly giant, and apparently a lot of odd things use the giant bones as masonry for buildings and machines? ... I REALLY don't understand.
Supposedly, the "shadow of the beast" refers to the fact that you have been transformed into a beast and now return to your creator, having to embrace your new beast-form to go through the many obstacles thrown in your way.
Aye. Shortly after I watched the playthroughs of the three games, I did research on them and was quite pleased to learn so much. The remake on ps4 is probably one of my favorite games of all time.
The storyline in the manual says you are turned to a warrior beast servant by magic as a child, see your father die years later and that returns your memory, then you go on a revenge rampage 80s style.
@@DarkKnightTrinity Yeah, after I made this comment, I went and looked it up. Hot damn, it is important as hell to read the book to understand anything going on.
I know it's terrible game design, but somehow, to my child mind, the fact that if you made one wrong move in this game you would be stuck seemed to make the whole game more enticing. Of course, it was only really enjoyably playable with the cheat mode enabled, even for seasoned gamers.
So I'm looking back at this older series because the reboot on PS4 had me curious. So what was the giant you fought at the end? It seemed like the whole game was hinting at the giants arrival. Whne the text at the end said "You have freed yourself from the shadow of the beast", does it reffer to the giant or to you becoming human in the next game?
We need a modern platform that uses a slightly souped up graphical capability, i.e. some 3d elements but same colour pallette and pixellation and DEFINITELY using the same sound hardware. Absolutely beautiful.
Why were the soundtracks on the Amiga way ahead of anything else at the time? Turrican 2, Xenon 2, Hybris and this. I would happily buy an Amiga in 2020 and replay all these classics.
I always thought it strange that the text "Shadow of the Beast" never appears anywhere in the game (except at the VERY end). Also weird that every enemy except bosses are defeated with one punch. Still, one of the great Amiga games. Especially the music.
This is because the original name for the game was going to be “Beast”. Once programming was wrapped up and Psygnosis started to strategise the marketing plan, they suddenly realised that there was another game called Beast and the name was copyrighted. They changed the name at the last minute to SOTB, but couldn’t be bothered with updating the loading screen and various in game texts!
In future upload it in 720p if you can. (well, assuming you haven't started doing that already - I mean this video is 2 years old...) It's what I do with old gaming footage nowadays. I mean, it does mean you have to convert it, but you get 50 or 60 fps without youtube messing it up. It might seem rather silly to upload something that may only natively be 320x240 or less, but due to how youtube works, sometimes that's what you have to resort to for the sake of getting the right kinds of results... XD
I first heard of this game through both the SNES & Genesis versions of Lemmings. This game could've been amazing. The gritty visuals, atmospheric soundtrack, and dark storyline are all very impressive for its time. But the game itself plays terribly. It's cryptic and loves to bombard you with enemies without even a moment of reaction time.
The style is beautiful, the music is inspiring, the plasma sound is for the good old M41A1 Pulse Rifle from Aliens, ...But boy this game is one those "This game is shitty....But it's shiny and i love it so much"

I agree. Impressive graphics, good soundtrack, solid atmosphere. Unfortunately, as with so many Amiga games, the developers lost sight of the fact that a good game must also have solid gameplay. Shadow of the Beast truly is a dreadful game.
The recent remake just was not that interesting. If I had to do a remake, Id just take this and simply add a bit more animation to background elements. drips of water, slime., blowing leaves. Have the main character and enemies blink. A tiny blood spatter when the protagonist and enemies get hit, and maybe give the protagonist an idle animation. A little extra animation for bosses. Some minor animation for cutscenes. But otherwise stick to the visuals, sound and music as closely as possible. With an option to play the original unmodded game as well.
If a remake was made exactly as you described then it would be the perfect update to a classic gem of a game. As you say, it is only the visuals and some animation that needed updating. Everything else should be left alone to preserve the atmosphere.
Shit ending! Given all the "between scene" artwork and text, I'd have expected something a lot better than a "congratulations" still screen. The game's surprisingly short if you actually know where you're going and where to find specific items, otherwise you just get stuck.
