My Mom has been talking about how much she would love an outdoor shower for years... So this past summer, I finally built her one!
Unfortunately, however, the best locaiton for the outdoor shwer was right next to the home's foundation - which introduced a few complications in terms of drainage, etc.
To build this DIY Outdoor shower, I followed these general steps:
1. Excavation:
I had to excavate the area around 10"-12" to give myself a level and firm base to build on. We rented a mini-excavator for this which made the process way easier. This was my first time operating a mini-excavator and it wasn't to difficult.
2. Drainage:
After excavating, I dug a trench for the the shower drain pipe. I put 18" of stone in the trench and then positioned a piece of 2" PVC pipe within the trench to serve as the drain. After sloping the pipe, I backilled the entire trench with stone.
3. Building the Conrete Shower Pan:
For my outdoor shower design, I first built a 4'x6' perimeter concrete "curb" to serve as the shower pan surround. I made the curb 8" wide, built the forms using 2"x6" lumber, and mixed the Rapid Set 24/6 Concrete Mix with the Mud Mixer. Next, I put the shower drain in place and poured a concrete sloped shower pan. You ABSOLUTELY need a rapid setting concrete like 24/6 mix if you want to try and slope a shower pan.
NOTE: Rapid Set 24/6 Concrete Mix is suitable for Foot Traffic in 8-10 hours and reaches structural strength in 24 hours.
4. Tiling the Shower Pan:
After letting the 24/6 concrete mix cure overnight, I tiled the shower pan. I used Rapid Set's All Tile Mortar for the thinset and I installed large format tile that my mom picked out. All Tile Mortar can be used as the thinset for all tile types and sizes. After letting the thinset cure for 5+ hours, I grouted the shower pan tiles.
NOTE: You don't NEED to tile the shower pan. You could also just seal the concrete shower pan and use that as the actual pan.
5. Supply Plumbing:
For the shower supply plumbing, I tapped the CPVC hot and cold water lines in the crawl space. I cut the pipes using a snap cutter, installed a branch tee, and then glued everything together using CPVC primer and glue.
6. Shower Panel Walls:
For the Walls of the Shower, I used the HOFT Privacy Panel System and thier composite board slats. This system was super easy to install. I mounted the vertical posts to the concrete using expansions anchors and then placed the composite slat boards in between the two posts.
7. Installing the Shower head / panel:
I used a Vigo Shower Panel for this project and I attached it to the HOFT walls using some bolts. This shower panel is awesome since it has the shower head (obviously), but also a body spray and spray wand function.
8. Final Touches:
To complete the outdoor shower build, I caulked around the perimeter of the shower pan, built the shower door (using HOFT posts and composite boards), and installed the gate hardware.
Overall, I am really happy with how this outdoor shower turned out. I made one HORRIBLE error when it came to tiling, so let me know in the comments if you "caught" the mistake.
My mom has told me over 100x how happy she is with the outdoor shower and I am glad that I was able to make it happen for her.

That Outdoor shower is nicer than a lot of Indoor showers. 👍 Beautiful job. Mom raised you right. ❤
I apprecaite it!
The stairway looking straight down into the shower made it an interesting design choice.
My thought exactly
Yeah .... not a great placement
If they are the only people around when they are showering, they may not care. They might even enjoy it.
So what about the people that can stand on the porch and look right down into the shower?
@@Bwk91291did you not read the previous comment when they said “if they’re the only people around…”?
I hope there's a sign on the top of the stairs exit saying ” shower in progress” or else somebody's going to have nightmares when they see their mama showering on accident 😵💫😵💫😵💫
Haha you can lock the latch from the inside thankfully. But my parents are empty nesters at this point so that’s on them haha
@@AndrewThronImprovements he may be talking about looking down from the deck above
@@Jeremy-pf3bb Oh yea you're cooked if that happens lol
If I was in that shower, they’d only look once.
No amount of therapy will fix that!
I'm positive your shower build is 100% mom approved, by this mom for sure! Excellent job - it's so beautiful! Great job Andrew - great video... I love that you explain what you're doing and why. Hope you have a great week.
I appreciate it, Lucy! Thanks for the support and have a great week on your end as well 👍
Vibrating the concrete would have been a chefs kiss. In a pinch a chisel tip on an SDS against the form works really well. Still, 5x better that I could have done lol, awesome work!!!
When doing a small square like that in the future, drill a hole in the side of the existing concrete and hammer in rebar and leave some rebar sticking out of the new concrete pour into the box you are concreting to tie the new concrete into the existing. This will prevent the smaller pour from settling
What an amazing Son you are!, Your Mama must be so proud of her boy! Xx
You should add a valve to drain the water for the winter. Maybe I missed that in the video. Then you could blow out the lines with air if you want. Maybe you don't live in an area that gets really cold. The project looks great for the rest of it. Great Job. Your Mom is a lucky lady.
You're absolutely right and I did add valves for emptying. Maryland winters can definielty do a number on water pipes.
That turned out really great! The Vigo shower system looks sleek. The privacy wall looks good too. It all ties in well. I like how you can detach the water lines from the feeder lines when winterizing this system. Well done Andrew. Momma has to be proud.
Apprecaite it, John! Yea I have some other valves at the low point for quick empty. Winter has no chance.
Cool balcony view for everybody having barbecue
Super super nice! I wish my mom could have had that when she’d work in her gardens 12-18 hrs every single day. She died two years ago at 98.
Prettiest outdoor shower that I've ever seen ! ❤ love that you did this for your Mom and shared with us ! Thank you !
I apprecaite the support!
CPVC becomes brittle over time in about 10~12 years especially on the hot water side since it gets hot then cools with no use. I would have done a concentric Pex within a PVC Sch 40 pipe for extra physical and UV protection as PEX also degrades with UV exposure.
I've ended up repiping homes with CPVC to PEX. CPVC was super popular in the 90s.
Flow Guard Gold CPVC is terrible stuff! The homes in our neighborhood were built about 25 years ago and the CPVC is failing. Insurance will pay for water repair damages but not repiping houses. After 3 floods our neighbors repiped their entire home with PEX to avoid the hassles. Cost was ~$10k. I would never recommend installation of CPVC. It’s a time bomb. By the way, there is a lawsuit underway against the CPVC manufacturer.
@@prestongabel1513agreed I don’t understand why people use CPVC still
Should have wrapped that deck post going thru your concrete to prevent direct contact with the concrete. That wood is going to prematurely rot.
Hold me tight

9:04 The little bug noooooo
Yea that was an unfortunately casualty. 0 days without an incident.
it’s all fun and games til someone dumps cold water over the balcony 😂
The outdoor shower came out awesome. Now my wife wants one...😅
I am not a plumber, but it is my understanding that CPVC is not uv resistant so it may degrade being outside exposed to the sunlight. Just throwing it out there.
Wow beautiful project …thanks. Last couple of minutes at end were icing on the cake.
This looks amazing! But seriously the best part is 22:38 Lol, trust me....
well done - so many skills involved. I think here in the UK we STILL do often mix concrete in a wheel barrow by hand......
Whee! When I saw that digger appear, the first thing I thought was the Thron Bros finally got tired of digging ditches and found something on Amazon !
glad to see you at it again and I must say that shower is much better than most indoor showers I have seen or used. At first I thought your Dad did not watch your premier showing of your concrete mixer until it sunk in that we dads have a tendency to tell stories of the olden days experiences ad nauseum... Overall you did great. I think covering the pipe with fabric over the stone was the best idea yet. Dirt would have found its way in sooner or later. I thought you may have retired so I was glad to see the instagram 4 part series of this job and wondered if along version existed so I dug up your home page and voila'. Thanks for an informative and entertaining video. Hi to Brian and family. Ciao.
PS: Can't imagine your Mom being shy! May we see ALL of the baby pictures please. So fun. This shower would be welcome to my inside of the house shower which needs replacing . Hmm.
Nice build.
I recommend you spray the cpvc with a protective coat. Perhaps also cover it with foam to protect against sunlight and sudden frigid temps.
Copper probably would've been better for outside. Or have the faucets on the wall and then just hook up hosepipes during the summer to supply the shower.
I would have reversed the door so the hooks are accesible.
Perhaps add hooks on the brick or hang it from the deck.
I would also have wrapped the post embedded in the concrete.
Very nice outdoor shower! I’m sure your parents love it.
Sweet work brother this deserves a like comment & subscribe. The template over the tiles is genius. Those tiles have some really nice colours in them.
I have an outdoor shower with a propane instant on water heater, supplied by a garden hose. It’s portable if necessary. Definitely the best thing I’ve ever built. Nothing beats taking a hot shower on a cold rainy night.
I am not building an outside shower, but I watched this whole thing 😂 Excellent work!!
Your instructions are so easy to understand, it's great!
Thank you!
Love that table stop block lol.... great video
Love me a handy man 😍 new subscriber here! Loving the content so far
I luv luv the shower. Thanks for listing the products.
WOW.. Great job. You were definitely not fooling around with that shower! :)
That's a solid trench drain, why not bury the gutter downspout on top of it with a pop-up emitter at the end? Looks like the grade drops right off down there
Could have probably incorporated that gutter down spout into your drain system of course it would need a filter screen to keep out leaves etc. and would have to require a larger underground pipe picking up the gutter runoff... just throwing that out there 🤔 nice job
Very nice job. All high end products..
I love it, much better than my pallet walls and floor and water hose fitted with a pet wash shower head extension. Hey it works though.
This is awesome!
Awesome. Beautiful space.
Confused on caulk instead of grout along edge of tile.
OBSERVATION..should have tied the house gutter next to it in same trench. After u pour the concrete, tap the forms to take air out of pour and help it settle. Nice vid
We used to use the Spin Doctor’s but switched to Lev-Tec wedges. Nice shower btw.
awesome video man! keep it up!
Well done, amazing, i would have painted the concrete n cut the bush😂
Nice but that location is wild. Once you see the stairs 🥴 i wouldve covered the top 😅😂 cause drones lol
Well...if you enjoy cold water showers..
Can you imagine in WINTER????
LOL
@franklee2683 He ran both hot and cold water lines to the shower, all good...😊
Looks great! Was the downspout behind it able to drain properly still?
Yea we spent a lot of time thinking about that. It’s only for a 4’ section or gutter near the fireplace and the runoff should go right across the slab and into the garden area which is down slope
Hi, why did you put the perforations in the pipe in the beginning? Isn't it going to make water accumulate eventually under the pipe?
This is Amazing!!!
Thanks!

That's awesome!!! I know nothing about investment and I'm keen on getting started.
What are your strategies?
If you are using a really good broker or account manager, it's easier to earn from the market
Investing with an expert is the best strategy for beginners and busy investors, as most failures and losses in investment usually happen when you invest without proper guidance. I'm speaking from experience.
Haven't you heard about HENRY E ABAGNALE?
Profitable investment requires experience, a solid strategy, and preparation, which we lack. Understanding buy/sell ratios, identifying market leaders, and diversifying are key to reducing risk. And this what he provides.
Awesome ❤❤❤
looks good but way to much slope on that tile and should have used a color match silconized grout calking for the edges aswell as covered the plumbing just the little details
regardless it works and im sure shes happy
Nice work. You should of cut off the corner post and install concrete ancre for the post, also drill holes in the old concrete and put rebar in it to tie the old to the new concreat. So they go up and down together.
You should learn how to spell-😂
Did you leave the wood strips embedded in the concrete shower floor?
Looked kinda crazy to me too.... Definitely better options considering that their budget didn't seem very limited. I was surprised to see 2x6s used for floor forms.
The ones used to template the tile? No, that was just used as a template to mark the tile.
It’s beautiful, but I hate having to stand on the drain while I’m showering lol
Use concrete plastic on top of the gravel, retains the water.
This is so cool. Great video.
Thanks Yulia!
If people plan to keep their bathing suits on when using this shower then there's no reason to add a door. If people plan to use this shower fully nude then anyone on the deck can just look over and see in since the roof is open.
Look down to see a show
Door could be good as a wind block if the breeze gets chilly at the end of the day.
looks neat though
Wow dude
Lucky Mama
Came out mint! Great job. Good boy :D
GREAT JOB!!!!
Thank you!
Trying to think about towel hook placement on the outside around the door, can’t put it between house n shower, probably not clean enough. Shower door can’t pop open with just a hand coming through, but alas, maybe showering in swimsuit like you did makes it a non issue. I like your Hollywood production value of the dying flower/greenery placement, plopped down flower pots, it’s a nice effort. I’m from the entertainment industry so I know how all that goes. OH, the viewing platform from up above, will always be a place for humor.
Did you catch sillicosis?
Very nice! 👍👍
Thank you!
You did good job
Thanks Allen!
Really nice
Thanks Pamela!
hi it's nice, the final scene in the shower could have been longer👀
🌴🌴🌴 Awesome job my friend simply awesome 👏👏👏 Blessings,Carlos ✝️🙏❤️😊🇺🇸
I appreciate it, Carlos!
That slope would have been much easier with a pool trowel!
I would spin that rain pipe to the shower cuz it'll make it more... Cooler I guess lol
Haha thought about that tbh
Looks great, but... just curious, how long does it take for the water to drain after a rain storm? The waste water drain field isnt very large, so I'd imagine it would fill up rather quickly when a heavy rain occur, that would limit ability to use the shower for a couple of days after a big rain. Any plans to make it larger in the future or tie it into a different drain solution? Not saying its bad as is nor am I saying 'you did that wrong, you suck', mostly wondering if any expansion plans or if anything you would do differently?
I want one!!
Hmmm a lot of effort for the drain, but then the gutter still drains right alongside the foundation anyway?
Very nice.
Thanks Tim!
The arm veinssss
FYI:
Sharpe can be removed by writing over it with a Dry Erase marker. Dry Erase markers will turn the Sharpe into Dry Erase too and you can just wipe it off with a cloth.
Great tip! The pencil was washing off in the wet saw 😅
Or just use some organic solvent you might have on hand. Acetone for example.
Awesome
Thank you! 🙏
You’re going to be bummed when that deck column needs to be replaced
🖤🖤
🥵 looks amazing!
Thanks!
Excellent video, thank you
Thanks Brock!
these rebar are overkill. You coud wash the escavator in this shower.
You're a beast! Great work.
Appreciate it, Matt!
You can just see it from the stairs
Wow! Knocked it out of the park!
Appreciate it!
Another awesome project
I appreciate it!! 🙏👍
I thought there would be some thirst trap footage...😩
Just FYI rebar is required to give concrete tensile strength. I'm not sure that is required in your scenario so could have saved yourself a little time and effort but otherwise looks great!
So impressed!
I appreciate it and thanks for watching!
won't the drainage system be clogged with dead skin, hair etc. after a few months/years?
Not if he left the underground pipe open enough to purge it
I thought about this a lot…I was going to put in a cleanout at the end but I figured that I would just be able to snake it from the drain (the run is only 10’) if there are issues in the future. Fingers crossed 🤞
@@AndrewThronImprovements but I also think the holes are big enough for it to be self-cleaning. But yes
Go to 21:24-21:35 WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT
This build would never pass a European Inspektion!. Burying a wood post in the concrete in a shower😂…..
It wouldn't pass an American inspection either.
Total Price for project?
It was a lot….way more than I thought it would be. Probably 2-3k. I feel like that is a LOT for an outdoor shower 🚿
@@AndrewThronImprovements one clip, garden house with hand sprayer, $10, 5 minutes. Heh
you're my new crush
What's the point of an outdoor shower?
Take a shower, outdoor
C pvc sucks because it’s brittle and will have pin hole leaks. After like 20 to 30 years your definitely gonna have problems
Do you need an additional Mom? I would love to have an outdoor shower!
So before I watch it says you tried so does that mean I get to watch you fail? Let’s watch and find out.
Yea don’t ever use cpvc get yourself a pex tool and just use that from now on.. trust me im a master plumber in ri i see that crap crack every year.
👏👏👏💗💗💗❤️
👍🙏
That plumbing looks horrific… wrong glue used on that pipe as well…
