The West of Europe should of reached out to Russia decades ago. But America will never let Germany and Russia come together which would be great for European Civilisation. America wants complete domination of Europe. It will be American driven Globalisation particularly open borders mass immigration that destroys European Civilisation not Christian Russia.
Also the West should not of backed the coup against the ELECTED government of Ukraine 8 years ago that started this nightmare. This bloody war has been going on for 8 bloody years with 14,000 people died BEFORE last week.
Russia has been slow to act, America would of acted after 8 hours if this was Canada.

Full of intellectual flaws in the assessment of the current situation, for example Ukraine could become like Libya. Discounting the fact that the tribal, political and cultural underpinning of Libya is entirely different. Whilst declaring intellectual certainty about the invasion after the event of invasion. People are constantly predicting outcomes and are often wrong. Equally people are constantly predicting outcomes that prove to be correct. It does not necessarily prove that an alternative outcome wasn't equally possible. Certitude is vanity. There is no rigour in this discussion as there is no exploration of an alternative negative outcome if NATO had not allowed defenceless smaller nations to join at their request. You could argue the situation now is because of the lack of inclusion in NATO not the expansion of NATO. The comment supporting Russia post USSR is also much more complex than Hitchens would have us believe. He calls for more complexity in thinking when it suits him and less rigour when it doesn't.

Then they push it and no proper discussion is allowed - and, unbelievably, MOST PPL CANNOT SEE WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS BLOCKING OF DEBATE. The ppl cannot see that they are being manipulated. Both are more expert than I but wholeheartedly agree that media hysteria is turning this into extreme anti-Russian sentiment (banning authors /composers/ sports stars /cats !) and will if anything lead to great problems in the future (if is one). There needs to be a peace broker found quickly and Russia will need to feel it gets something out of it or the suffering (& risks) will increase.

It's worth reading Brzezinski's works on the US geostrategy regarding Eurasia from 1997. If the US wanted to stay the only global superpower in the long term, then even what remained of the post-Soviet Russia had to be further dismantled. It was Putin who was able to stop it. Brzezinski wrote: "In these circumstances, Russia's first priority should be to modernize itself rather than to engage in a futile effort to regain its status as a global power. Given the country's size and diversity, a decentralized political system and free-market economics would be most likely to unleash the creative potential of the Russian people and Russia's vast natural resources. A loosely confederated Russia -- composed of a European Russia, a Siberian Republic, and a Far Eastern Republic -- would also find it easier to cultivate closer economic relations with its neighbors. Each of the confederated entitles would be able to tap its local creative potential, stifled for centuries by Moscow's heavy bureaucratic hand. In turn, a decentralized Russia would be less susceptible to imperial mobilization."
It's also interesting what he wrote about the role of Ukraine in his book, The Grand Chessboard :, “Ukraine, a new and important space on the Eurasian chessboard, is a geopolitical pivot because its very existence as an independent country helps to transform Russia. Without Ukraine, Russia ceases to be a Eurasian empire.”
“However, if Moscow regains control over Ukraine, with its 52 million people and major resources as well as access to the Black Sea, Russia automatically again regains the wherewithal to become a powerful imperial state, spanning Europe and Asia.”

Honestly all the former Warsaw Pact states and ex-Soviet Republics in Europe, which joined NATO (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czechia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria) and I'd even venture to suggest former Yugoslav states which joined NATO (Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia) should never have joined NATO which really in terms of it's original raison d'etre became obsolete when the USSR/WP was disbanded. Like you I think they should have become buffer states and if needs be in a third non-NATO alliance so that they would have had a mutual defence policy, and even which other NATO states in Western Europe could have joined by leaving NATO and thus no longer being under US influence. However that is I suppose a utopian vision which would have meant the US giving up it's military power in Europe, it's had bases in Western Europe since the end of WW2 and I don't suppose it wanted to give them up.

If the absolute requirement is to avoid WW3 at any cost, then if he then decides to say I want Poland and everywhere east of Elbe out of NATO, is that agreed to?
