What I find frustrating is that naturally-aspirated engines are becoming a novelty these days. Props to Lexus for not replacing their V6 with a turbo 4-banger.
#1 reason ppl keeps buying Lexus is because their reliability. Once they go into force induction there is no way their engine will last over 150k without a oil leak.
We don't have the V6 in Australia.. it's only the es300h

Finally someone is reviewing the regular ES350! Everyone on TH-cam is only doing the f sport only or just the hybrid.
I approached it like I do pizza. I try the regular cheese first. If you can do that well, then maybe I'll come back. In this case, we're doing the HEV next (Wednesday) and then when the F Sports make its way to the fleets, we'll tear one of those off the roll . . .
Good point! The regular is the cheapest (in terms of initial investment) and most satisfying to drive of the 3.

The Es is for sure punching above its weight to compete with other mid sized luxury competitor’s. The IS will also stay around and will probably be fully redone next year. Lastly, I feel the gs will evolve into a four-door coupe to compete with the likes of the cls, A7, and 6 series gran coupe.
I suspect the GS will be discontinued and the F-Sport ES will be AWD and get an increase in horsepower in the next 2 years and then there will be a regular ES with standard front wheel drive with optional AWD.
I think the IS will remain, but I am unsure how well the RC is selling, it may go too.
Nice review. The new ES is very nice. I can see Lexus offering an all wheel drive version of the ES. I don’t see them offering a new GS in the future. Lexus is starting to fill in the gap between the ES and the GS. Even though the GS has always been sportier than the ES it seems to be struggling to compete with its rivals, the E Class, the 5 Series, and the A6.
I hope the GS stays around but unlike you & me, the market doesn’t care about FWD vs. RWD.
The ES will have an AWD option in 2020'.

I heard from some big suits at Lexus HQ that Mr Toyota was planning on killing the Gs line up and if it stays it would only be the turbo since the hybrid is gone . Also they are source that the last Gsf would be twin turbo v8 4 liter with 550 ponies same on the rcf.

Nice to hear a credible guy telling us exactly why this is a Lexus and the Avalon is a Toyota. Same drive train, yes...but it's tweaked differently. It's different...it's better.
I drove the Avalon. It has trouble finding gears, etc. He says this one has quick shifts...shifts you don't notice. I can't wait to drive it!!! Nice review.

I think the GS is on the way out. The new ES is going to be available in many more markets, and is, as you found, very much an improvement over the previous model. I would prefer a GS over an ES, but I guess sales figures will determine whether it's worth keeping the GS around.

I think the GS will return as probably a more expensive model than before, since you said that the Lexus guys are saying the ES competes with C-class and 3-series, they would still need an E-class/5-Series competitor. I hope they turn the GS into a 4-door coupe like the A7 and the CLS.

I personally think GS will be discontinued. But I’ll be delighted to see a sporty GS with a swooping roofline 😍that can compete with A7 and new CLS( or whatever it’s called now).
Just leased the 2019 Lexus ES350, and absolutely love it. Have figured out most of the electronics, and really appreciate the fingertip control on most selections.
The only thing that takes getting used to, is the sensitivity of the "mouse" control on console.
If only there were a way to temporarily render it turned off, so our 2 Maltese can't change settings, that would be terrific.

I don’t think people understand how good of a car the GS350 is(especially in fsport trim or just look at the gs F) , and losing that rear wheel drive bias sedan would lose customers. So I’m really hoping it does evolve into something new.

One of the most underrated cars ever. Still driving a 1st gen Gs getting close to 300k and the car still runs as smooth as a new car. Of course maintenance helps, but this car has been misunderstood from the beginning and I blame Lexus for that.

Now back to your final question....odd that Lexus is doing a F sport version of this car with I think only suspension and trim piece mods and no engine upgrades. This car was always the modern Buick. My mother (who is a grandmother) has driven ES's since the 90s when she abandoned Cadillac after a poor dealer experience. I think she's on her 4th car now. The GS was always the slightly larger driver's car which I think Lexus always wanted to have in the stable to compete with the 5 series and E class but it's never come close to the sales of those cars. The ES on the other hand sells zillions of models, surpassed only by the RX. So from a fiscal standpoint, the ES wins back in the corporate headquarters (which is why its coming to Europe now). But I still can't imagine that a FWD car, even as nice as this one is ever going to challenge a RWD/AWD platform of any kind which is where the GS and it's competitors play unless they think they can do what Audi does with the A6, which means they need AWD here and they don't have it yet.

Thanks for that. A bunch of the owners are wondering if there is something wrong with their vehicles considering the varying numbers they get when they punch the accelerator. My theory is that the engine computer limits the theorectical max boost depending on the conditions but it would be good to hear it from the horse's mouth since some of the dealers are having to deal with some paranoid owners.
As for my mother, she was driving Cadillacs since she bought a '79 Seville new back then (and I loved that car in high school). Her parents both drove Cadillacs. Her last one was a '93 Deville. After four years of driving it, she went to her local dealer to buy a new Deville but the dealer (who had been acquired by Sonic) didn't take her seriously. She came in and asked "how much will you sell me that car [a new Deville]?". Instead, the sales rep began talking about how much money a month would it cost and other stuff that didn't just give her a price. Maybe they treated all people that way. Maybe it was because she is a black woman. But they royally pissed off the Middle School Director for Nashville Public Schools and my mother put her school principal hat on, told off the rep, walked out in a huff, drove across town to the Lexus dealership and had a new ES in an hour. The Sonic dealership not only screwed up that sale but also the next four sales and she'll probably buy the car you featured in this video one of these days. In recent years I had a bad service department experience with the Mini of Nashville dealership which is also owned by Sonic. I dunno what's with this dealership group but I'm avoiding them if I can.
What is your opinion about the 350 ES being built in Kentucky? I worry the reliability will not be the same.
I have a bit more experience on this subject than most. I actually built cars at a BMW factory as part of an internship during University. As such, can say without a doubt that if an OEM has a good reputation at manufacturing, the chances are VERY good that they can duplicate that in other parts of the world through the adoption of their processes in region. This applies to most OEMs in most regions.
GS is on the chopping block, the sales volume is so low and is too similar in size to the ES. I can see them keeping the IS because it shares so much with the RC . As a salesman, it might be hard to sell the new ES for those looking for an entry-level Lexus. The reason as that when equipped, it will cost at least 2-3k more than before... On the other hand the new entry for Lexus is the UX coming soon....Sorry for the convolusion.

I personally think that there's too many crossovers for Lexus now. The RX was needed, NX was okay, and now the UX? I believe it's gonna take away a big chunk of sales from the IS and ES.
Sang Eeth I think the ux and the new ES will both do well. The ux should appeal to the former market of the CT/HS. The ux has a cheaper entry price as well. I personally would pick the ux over the ES...awd cheaper and better MPG

I am a rear wheel drive bias guy. I love my GSf sport. And I understand I am the minority with just over 7000 sales last year. But when it’s gone, I have no interest in this mirrored FWD GS.
Al Pappalardi I prefer rwd as well, but Lexus has to appeal to the masses with the ES if they plan on keeping any sedans viable in the age of crossovers

The GS is for sure on the out, and the ES will take up the slack. Ive also been told the ES will have AWD. It shares the rav 4 platform with AWD.
I agree the Lexus GS might be going away. I walked into the Lexus Dealership & saw the 2019 Lexus ES & it reminded me of the $104,000 LS. Like, Why would I buy a GS when the ES is sexier & looks more like the high end LS. The GS is not as good looking🤔 Yes I ❤️ the ES 😊 Great Job Lexus.

I think its definatly scary for thw GS. If you say the new ES has almost comoletly masked the typical FWD drawbacks. They have s whole spread of RWD sport sedans, amd the LS flagship. Is there room for chubby GS anymore. Whay does it do that the Is can't, how much cheaper is it than the base LS? Idk maybe I'm missikg the GS magic. I had a 2008 530i and loved the size over the 3 series at the time but now that all cars have gotten bigger even the smaller cars arent reallhly small anymore. Which bringa me to my a question the IS models are always all the same size body right?I say so bc I think ggenerations played tricks on my mine before thinking the is250 was smaller than 350 but I assume it was just previous generation idk

I believe the GS is going to be discontinued due to low sales and now that the ES drives better and has more power, as well as, being the same size/a little bit bigger than the GS, there really is no room for the GS in the Lexus line up anymore.

No, no, no, the GS 350 has more power 311 HP and torque (285 lb-ft). And it drives much better/faster.

I'm also surprised. Expected it to be a rebadged Avalon. I think people who like to drive, will still want a Sedan. VS SUVs, which don't need to be as good when push past 90%.
Very few will cross shop a rear driver with a front drive, doubtful one will affect the other. What we're seeing is improvement across the board with front drives. All the competent manufacturers are closing the gap betwee their rear drive counterpart.
As you can tell, I was VERY surprised by that long list of REAL changes they made between the Avalon and ES. To make HUGE changes - Laser Welding, Adhesives, V Brace in the back, strut brace in the front - to the platform of essentially the same car is no joke.

Just announced: The 2019 ES 350 starts at $40,525 an increase of $550 over the outgoing car. Price includes $1,025 destination fee.
While I think it's very likely the rumors of the GS's demise and the design of this new ES seem to indicate it being imminent, remember that the GS is based in part on the Toyota Crown, and that very recently got a new concept for its 15th generation. So while GS sales are certainly very slumped, I think that Toyota is smart enough to be wary of the risk of diluting its brand by lacking a midsize RWD sedan when BMW and Mercedes continue to pump plenty of money into the 5-series and E-class redesigns. If the cost of translating it to a NA release is low enough and Toyota is ernest about wanting Lexus to maintain an image of being the sole asian company that actually rivals the germans than I could see it sticking around.

No matter how great a car GS is( and I’m seeing more people praising it after hearing the rumors of it being discontinued), if it doesn’t sell well, it’s unprofitable. Plus it’s not necessary for Lexus to have 2 models to compete in the same size category when they can instead focus on one product and make it better.
Sadly, I think that the GS is going away. It hasn't been updated in quite some time (still sports the first "spindle grill" design), and the number of options available in America has been severely reduced (e.g. no more Luxury package). I have owned several GS's and loved them, but I believe that the handwriting is on the wall.
It doesn't make sense to have two mid-size offerings that compete against each other. Lexus is doing just that with the ES and GS. Given that GS sales are at an all time low, it should only stand to reason that it should be on the chopping block. With all of the improvements made to the ES for 2019, it makes up for the absence of the GS in all regards except AWD. I think that Lexus will offer AWD on the next generation of the ES to bridge the gap. Once that is done, the GS will have been re-branded to the ES 350 AWD.

How is the head room?
Have a look again at the TECH REVIEW: th-cam.com/video/vRwEOKdlDHs/w-d-xo.html - specifically the segment where I am sitting in the right seat. The way the camera is set up shows it well. I am 6' 0" and the seat was set up as I would drive the car. That should tell you everything.
The GS is dead. No question about it, the market just isn’t there for a sporty midsize sedan. The IS still has a chance if they can adapt the GA-L platform into a smaller frame or modify the Z4/Supra architecture. But it will also need an AWD variant to compete (PHEV) likely.
Thats why I am getting such a great deal on a used GS. Awesome Car, Rides like an ES and is RWD! I live in Tampa so FWD is not an option.

I think that the IS will stick around but not the GS. The IS hasn't been the king of sales but considering the price tag is so close to the ES and new for this generation NX, it's holding its own. The GS has declined pretty sharply in sales compared to the last generation, and hasn't particularly outdone its competitors. If the GS has anything keeping it alive, it's the new Toyota Crown platform. However a shrunken version of that might just get used for the IS, much like the current IS inherited from the GS.

GS...what is its competition? Going back to 2006, it was never a threat to a 5 series, E class, A6. They drove sportier while the GS was a bit floatier (I have a 2007 GS350). Its only competion from 2006-2011 was the Infiniti M and Acura RL. Neither sold well. I think the 2013-2018 is better designed against a 5 series or E Class. But these drivers want road feel. The GS handles OK but it does so as a luxo-cruiser, that gives the impression the driver doesn't have total control of the car. GS - like the car but consumers will migrate to the ES or IS.
The GS will be discontinued in 2 years MAX. According to Lexus (Toyota) the sales are down and the Vehicle isnt selling in comparison to the ES300. Now coming from an Infiniti G37x, I was looking into purchasing a '16/'17 GS 350 F Sport. After researching the specs I was truly disappointed with the performance. There is no reason why the IS 350 & GS 350 has the same Horsepower! The GS should at least be packing 350 HSRP under the hood. The additional power would've definitely boost the sales in my opinion. Especially at the stock price range. With two vehicles in the same size dimensions, its a no brainer to purchase the cheaper vehicle (ES 350) and leave the GS ($10K more) in the dealership. I totally think that was not a good move by Lexus. Either way, now im on the fence about getting the GS 350 due to the lack of power.
How does this channel exist with so few views in comparison to others? Are you on the manufacturers' payrolls or independently wealthy?

First screw up for the GS is lack of room to sit in the damn thing. I'm not a particularly big guy but the booster seats for the thighs dig Into my leg. They didn't make the lats adjustable either. The damn seats are made for skinny Asians like my mom. I'm 5'10 230 and exercise have cycling legs and while not a weight lifter I had to sit sideways in it. I was this " close to buying one but when I couldn't fit in the seat that pretty much killed it. My wife who is 5 feet 4 inches fits in that seat perfectly. She LOVED the car. I wanted to get it for her.
So instead I purchased Lexus IS 350 convertible. Not as much oomph but enough AND I can sit comfortably anywhere. Oh and getting in the back seat I don't hit my head on the roof and fit in those seats. Pretty incredible.
Make the GS for bigger guys with adjustable thigh & upper lats then you'll open the market to more averaged sized guys.

That's the rumor and it is looking to be true sadly. The GS has a great car with an outdated design at launch. It drove great. Better than a 5 Series.
It's the FWD Avalon chassis and drivetrain that let Lexus hit the price point on the ES. If it were RWD, it would cost like the GS. In fact, it would be the GS, and that car's price/value proposition sank like a stone in the marketplace.

I believe it's already gone in the European market, replaced by this new ES. Sadly I think it's a mistakes if they do it, because there is lot's of room for improvement and increase sales in the category. While I'm here, Lexus/Toyota u and the other manufacturers who are dumb enough not to offer both Android auto and Apple car play need to wise up. It's a huge turn off, because car infotainment systems get outdated really fast, while having both Android and Apple helps to keep your system somewhat up-to-date.
people like having fast cars and the 300hp GS doesn't cut it and the GSF is out of budget for most people .The Infiniti Q50 redsport half the price can hang with the V8 in the GSF I know because I'm a Lexus guy but couldn't resist that twin turbo v6 in the Nissan. but Lexus needs to up the numbers on the base model GS's and people will buy the fuck out of it

Here is the problem with the GS versus ES saga. A FWD layout is always cheaper than a RWD layout, and typical customers can't justify the $5-10 K difference in cost. This hits home much more in the non-luxury mainstream sedan/cars. The enthusiasts, i.e. those who also love stick shifts, make up a tiny minority...too bad. Lexus tried to justify the inevitable cost difference between a ES and GS by making the GS larger, but it wasn't enough since then it approached the LS market. Hence the GS may go away. The GSF with 5.0 was the quintessential sports sedan, but then one started comparing it to 2 door sports cars and M5's, which itself is a small, highly competitive market.
There is a segment of the population that still eschews all of these notions of "practicality" and still want sedans.

I say GS is on way out The Cadillac is not a consideration when looking at the market. It is in an odd place compared to the 5 series and E class and doesn't stand out. The IS on the other hand is staying. It like the ES needs an overhaul performance wise especially with new Geniuses launch G70 getting good reviews. Mercedes Benz leapt ahead of Toyota as words most valuable car brand things need to be shaken up.
I want the ES to get AWD, on both the V6 and Hybrid. At that point, it can replace the GS. BUT, the GS needs to move upmarket and become a BMW 6-Series, Audi A7 competitor. This is the only solution I will accept moving forward.

Check the speakers in 2019 ES 350s. Only 2 front ones work out of 10 as advertised.

It’s not an Avalon. If it was a Toyota, it would say Toyota, not Lexus. You also would have many thousands more in the bank.
People always love to dump on Lexus. Generally it’s people that only get to experience Lexus from a far - like someone who was given one on loan to review.
Toyota and Lexus has dug there self in a hole. Instead of competing they have been safe. I like where both of them are going but it's to late. The GS should of had over 400hp back in 2013. Interior on there cars has gotten so much better. But as a GS owner i will be heartbroken if they kill it off. A front wheel drive ES or AWD ES will never truly take the place of a GS.
That 4 Door Lexus | It's probably cheaper for them to axe of the GS because the ES is built on a developed Avalon chassis. The GS has it's own chassis and that's going to be more expensive for them to develop a new platform. If the GS racked in more sales and demand, they'd obviously focus less in the ES and more in the GS. However, this is all just what I, as a Lexus fan thought up. There's no facts like the guy in the video said, I could back up.
Sang Eeth the GS sold fairly well 13-15 then they refreshed it and made it uglier all over and sales dropped big time. Also it should have had a bit more power to compete
Theyre just following the market. Everyone wants a crossover now and not a midsize sedan at all. Only sedans that sell well now are just cheap entry cars.
Bill H: I said Lexus and Toyota dug there self into this hole that they are in now. I love there vehicles I own one. But not being competitive and banking on only reliability will take you so far. Not being competitive has brought poor sales to both companys. No matter if the ES brings AWD next year. The horsepower has gone down. With AWD this car should be around 350 plus horsepower.
Buy a GSF 467hp.
