  • One of the great pleasures we have is touring (and supporting) some of our local greenhouses and nurseries in the Finger Lakes area. Additionally, getting plants locally will often mean that those plants are more accustomed to the weather patterns of the area. One of the nurseries we had been planning to visit since getting on the land was Coldwater Pond Nursery, run by Ted Hildebrandt-a third-generation nurseryman.

    Isn't it nice when you go to a party and find someone who speaks your language? Are there any camping places in the greenhouse? I rode my bike through a certain very old giant forest which had been protected by the former presence of a wall and visited a nearby garden center for outdoor plants. Those 2 times I realized what real air to breath must be. You feel so much better, instantly. Great people, great tour. I am for sure envious of their chance to live and work, with a passion for life and beauty. The planet thanks them.

    Oh my. I have admired Japanese Maples forever, but until now, couldn't give any a good home. I visit an unknown neighbor's house just to see them. They have several colors of these elegant little trees. They have other cool plants too. Cool guy to talk to with a cool nursery as well. You guys have all the fun, with your neighbors. I have never met the people in that house, with their beautiful garden. Sigh.

    Awww this one reminded me of my mother and the lilac tree she had in our garden when I was a child. 😍
    But what I really loved about this and almost all of your tours is the enthusiasm and generosity of the hosts - like Ted, they seem to be such lovely happy people, so proud of their work and happy to share their knowledge. It's really cool.

    The nursery owner say he was a third generation grower reminded me of the Theodore Roethke poem Child On Top Of A Greenhouse
    The wind billowing out the seat of my britches,
    My feet crackling splinters of glass and dried putty,
    The half-grown chrysanthemums staring up like accusers,
    Up through the streaked glass, flashing with sunlight,
    A few white clouds all rushing eastward,
    A line of elms plunging and tossing like horses,
    And everyone, everyone pointing up and shouting!
    Theodore Roethke

    Among trees with red color leaves, I was always struck by the beauty of the Thundercloud Plum. On a sunny summer's day when the light shines through the leaves, the effect is magical. The leaves almost look like garnet gemstones. I lived in Rochester, NY for many years and Thundercloud Plums were known to many gardeners. I didn't hear about or see any of these trees in this video. Maybe they are too common a plant for this specialized nursery. I grew flowering almond bushes and they are a shop stopper in the Spring but they are not a shapely bush. Finally my childhood home was right next to Highland Park which has a huge lilac collection. There are probably 1,200- 1,300 lilac bushes with over 500 varieties in the collection. People drive down from Canada and up from Pennsylvania and even New York City to attend the Lilac Festival in Rochester at the end of May. I used to keep my windows open and the back porch door open to catch whiffs of the amazing lilac perfume. Another magical moment. I would encourage everyone to attend the Highland Park Lilac Fesitval at the end of May.

    I live in the opposite corner of the US…Washington state on the shores of Puget Sound. I am a plant collector and spent many hours and money shopping at Heronswood Nursery when it was in operation…even painted their catalog cover one year. I have their Puget Pink maple which makes wonderful seedlings. The foliage is a bright pink on the back and a lovely brownish green top. If you want seed let me know. It’s a relatively small maple and has a wonderful shape and grows quickly.

    The larch forests in my area, western MT, are the best in fall. Almost everything, well tall enough to see from a distance, is a conifer. So the splotches of yellow everywhere are amazing. That said, the high elevation aspen are nice too but don't stick out as much. The understory though, has just about every color from the huckleberries to maples to alders, elders, to the evergreen bushes.

    One of the income sources I am interested in is the specialty plant sales. Because I want to build a list of plants suitable to the conditions in my area. There has been little to no work done in that niche.
    I wonder if you can make a video interviewing the owner of a nursery like this about how the trees are grown in pots for easy sell.

    Here we get small beige Russian moths on the Chestnuts, which ruin the leaves. This starts each June and I have no idea how the trees can still be alive. I have heard that the pink blossomed ones are more resistant to this problem than the white. They also have beautiful leaves until June.

    • @FlockFingerLakes
      @FlockFingerLakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure! Haven't heard of the moth; will have to do some research on it, but it's something you should ask your extension office in your county.

    • @cefcat5733
      @cefcat5733 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chestnut Leaf Miner. That is what Google says. Here they call them Russian Moths because they came here from there some years ago. They are plentiful. June is their attack month and there is not a proper way to gather leaves in order to prevent the spread. Some make it into the house. Ah, Nature.
