      @@benjaminhackl3429 US, ironically, people have been panic buying ammo for so long that manufacturers still haven't caught up. We're slowly starting to get ammo back in, but sales are limited to 1 box per person here locally... and some rounds are still out of stock with no idea of when they will be.
      At least JHP is still /available/.

      .....AND greatly diminishes the utility of John Garand's masterpiece! Having handled the garand since i was 8 in '55, hanging around the local ROTC, i have never had "m1 thumb". The loading method shown in this video is bizarre & unorthodox, not to mention the clip being incorrectly loaded (it will work either way, but the top round should be to the right). Proper technique places the heel of your hand in front of the op rod handle, precluding any possibility of the bolt closing on your thumb. Since when TSHTF, my garand will be my go-to (mattel-o-matics are fun, but for a shooting war, i'll choose an actual battle rifle!), i'll be happy to have the empty clip out of my way so i can reload, just as mr. Garand designed it! I can pick up the ($3!) clip later if i survive.

    Locks on the 8th because on some of the Garands if you load an enbloc with the bottom round on the right it will trigger the bolt hold open after the 7th round. Try loading the clips so that the bottom round is on the left. Should fix that issue.

    • @ahseaton8353
      @ahseaton8353 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Later production Garands fixed this problem. There was a machining /tolerance error in the feed system that only showed up on the clips loaded right side first, as mentioned above. The clip manufacturers made sure they loaded the left side first, which also "fixes" the problem.

    • @dukecraig2402
      @dukecraig2402 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ahseaton8353
      I'm so sick and tired of all this nonsense about M1 thumb.
      First off the machining problem had to do with the first round misfeeding, it had absolutely nothing to do with the bolt not going forward once the clip locks into place, put a well used clip into a well used M1 that both have the parkerazation worn off the wear area's and I can assure you the bolt's going forward and YOU WON'T GET M1 THUMB BECAUSE IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO GET IT LOADING ONE, Jesus Christ I'm so sick of idiots babbling on about this.
      M1 thumb happened in basic training when a nervous recruit would fumble the Inspection Arms Drill, it requires you to lock the bolt to the rear so when the inspecting officer takes the weapon from you he can see that it's cleared, after inspecting the weapon and he hands it back to you you're required to drop the bolt using ONLY your right hand while maintaining "eyes front", ie you're not allowed to look down when you do it.
      Anyone who thinks the military would have accepted a weapon that could slam the bolt on your thumb while loading it in the heat of battle is a moron.
      The incorrect machining that was done because Springfield Armory took production of the M1 without having Garand as part of setting up mass production only happened to the very earliest rifles, once the missfeed problem was identified the majority of them were sent back to Springfield Armory and the area's machined too deeply when the holes for the barrel threads were cut were welded up and fixed, only a rare few exist that still have the incorrect machining in them, they're worth quite a bit on the collectors market even though they're flawed.
      There was no change in parts that had anything to do with the bolt locks or releases, they were all exactly the same part number throughout the entire range of M1 manufacturing, there are no early and late parts concerning them.

      All you got to do is load it as if you were a left-hander and it works perfectly every time.
      You are correct right handed loaders always have the 8th round hang in early production models.
      Only after on the firing line did they find that the left-handed shooters, we're able to fire all eight rounds, did they figure out what was going on.
      Before they got it fixed they would just tell people to hand their clips to a left-handed buddy and let him load it.
      Because instinctively the left hander will place the first shell on the left side.

    • @nauseaah
      @nauseaah 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Yep, I was thinking the same thing! Ian mentioned that they had shipped the first batch for testing before they'd isolated the issue, and were frantically trying to get it ironed-out during Army testing by making sure they got quality ammo, or something to that effect. (I'm editing this in fifteen minutes, after I've re-educated myself)
      EDIT: it's specifically the clip feeding the last round(s) from the "wrong side", you can feed a clip in either direction it'll allow, but it positions the last round in a different spot. So if you ensure that the rounds are always feeding in the same order, R, L, R, L... ETC. the issue is non-existent.

    I've been handling firearms my entire life and I've never seen anyone load a 8 round stripper clip in an M-1 Garand the way this guy did and not get "M-1 thumb." The way I've always done it and I was taught by a WWII combat veteran was you hold the forearm of the rifle with your weak hand then firmly grip the clip with your dominant hand's thumb, index and middle fingers, then gently but firmly push downwards until the clip is in the breech of the receiver. Then still holding the rifle the same way with your weak hand holding the rifle by the forearm pull back on the slide release/charging handle and move your dominant hand away (all in the same movement) @ a 45 degree angle. If you load the M-1 Garand this way and reverse the procedure when unloading the rifle you'll always be copacetic (ok).

      @@eggwitheyez the thing I love about the M1 Garand is that it's several things at once. It's iconic. It's what I think of as a rifleman's rifle. The ergonomics make it a pleasure to shoot!
      I love wooden furniture on a military service rifle. The number of rounds is irrelevant if you can't
      keep a decent site picture and put them on the paper! This is the yard stick I always use to determine how well I like a weapon like this. Ease of use. If it's a torment to shoot what good
      is it to me? What use is into me?! The simplest designs are always 🔥 👌 the best!
