    I love the way you explain. Your tutorials don't need sound effects, faces, animations, glitz and glam, etc..
    Slow explanations, emphasis, and sticky notes are all that matters.

      It's in work. There's a lot I want to cover in "Part 2" and I'm thinking I may break it down into 4 parts (4 separate videos) in order to make the information a little more digestible. These videos mean more to me than just putting out Factorio tutorials. I really want to improve my ability to make quality videos which means learning more about editing, creating effects, and taking my time. Thanks for your support and comments they do mean much to me!

      That settles it... I'm going to start working on the script for Part 2. Keep in mind that Part 1 took 2 months and I put at least 100 man hours into it... Part 2 shouldn't take that much but we shall see!

    The transitions with the last bit of the last word cut out is so awesome.
    The way you do things is my favorite. I wish other youtubers (or better, you!) did more videos of builds with the circuit network.

    Another brilliant video. Really starting to get my head around using combinators more now. my station system has been a diabolical mess so this implementation is going to be great.

    I greatly appreciate the complexity that went into this, but decided to go with a single-headed train network of 1-4's. So far, I've found that 1-4's work at least reasonably well - they carry quite some cargo, have decent performance and their stations still have a fairly small footprint. The biggest advantage of single-headed 1-4's is that you don't have to haul a dead-weight locomotive all of the time (which saves a lot, since 1 locomotive weights the same as 2 cargo wagons). This means that, to get the performance and capacity of a 1-4 in a double-headed train, you'd need a 2-4-2 (which means double the fuel cost, and almost double the train size).
    Although don't take my word for what's best. The main joy of Factorio is trying out different things and seeing what works. There isn't one perfect way to do it, and even then, something doesn't have to be perfectly optimized to work fairly well.

    for ages, i've been playing factorio without using logical systems because i tought i didn't need them and were too much complicated (i've only used in the most basic way, like controlling inserters). as i got boring with the game, i am now finding myself in a completely new gameplay understanding logical systems and how they are actually really simple

    Excellent video and explanation, very educational. More videos of practical things like the emergency power SR latch and balanced train station would be great so I can give the red and green wires more purpose in my factories.

      I use combinators all over in my factories and 99% of the time it's to make things work more efficiently... 1% of the time they are used for pointless fun things!

    Great video! I love seeing someone who is knowledgeable and is willing to tackle the tougher combinator subjects and explain them well. If you have any ideas, I would love to use the circuit network to send trains to a specific refueling station when their fuel runs low rather than have a refueling train go to various train stops.

      Unfortunately Dydreth, there's no way of getting trains to do that... At least that I know. For the time being, we are stuck with sending out refueling trains.

    these things is quite interesting too show off too friends. And so many are still battled too why they would consider making time for it... Well just like setting up mining stations with trains you can think the same way about the green and red wires :) its complicated but does the work :)

      The biggest problem is that most players feel that combinators and the circuit network are too complicated... Don't get me wrong. It can get complicated but most of time my combinator use involves quick simple builds.

    For me it's hard to follow because you are saying the main goal, then just what to connect with what, but not why. I couldn't follow the logic because i didn't know what you were achieving with each connection

      Hey Chis, I was originally going to do something like that but I thought it would be better to incorporate the use of combinators in actual builds.     Couldn't follow, brain ended up on table, it didn't work.
    That said, my setup is different, no double headed train, and you never mentioned what signals to use at the parking or on the lights.
    But seriously, this is not working. I always get one train already heading going ahead and leaving parking only to then stop right in front of one of the stations, where it is of course held up by the signal, because there is still train in there.
    Does this just no longer work in the new version ?
    If my trains exit in the front, what do i do with the signals ?
    The red signal that goes back to the signal near the entrance of your station is also looped to the exit in the front of the station, but that didn't do anything either.
    4 wagons per train, 4 stations, 5 trains.
    Connected all chests on both sides of the track to one pole per station, then to the combinator.
    Constant Combinator 8K
    Decider Combinator 32K
    Arithmetic Combinator 24K
    Do not have settings for the lights, or the Constant Combinator you have at the parking signal, no lights work.
    I just spent 3 hours screwing around, with nothing to show for it.
    Great.
    This has to be possible.
    And it should be far easier.

    The transitions crack me up. Is that a tribute to something that used to happen in the Stooges movies? (I recognize the tune, but I don't remember the abrupt interstitial card cutting off the last half of the word before it.) Regardless, well done.

      Thank You! The tune was clipped from "Swinging the Alphabet" which appeared in "Violent is the Word for Curly." I have absolutely no idea where I got the idea of cutting off the last half of the word... But I don't think it was from the Stooges.

    ShredGuy, great series on the combinators and the circuit network. I'm having an issue with this particular build and I'm not quite sure where I've screwed up. I have four stations offloading Iron ore with 5 trains each having 2 cargo wagons. What I"m running into is the Stacker exit will go green without any stations being green. So I end up with a train blocking the exit of the stacker waiting for a station to drop below avg. Did I miss a connection anywhere?
    Thanks in Advance, you and the rest of the Cracktorio gang have really helped me get value out of Factorio.

      Double check the values in the Stacker SR Latch. With your setup, the number in the Decider Combinator should be 16,000 and the "Bias" that goes into the Arithmetic Combinator should be 12,000. Essentially, trains should only exit the stacker if the amount of Iron Ore in the offload drops below 4,000 and should continue to allow trains to exit until the amount of ore in the offload hits 16,000. If that doesn't work, let me know and we'll try to figure out what else could be going wrong.

    Can you use the same theory to create a condition where a train only leaves the UNLOADING area when a mining station is empty? If you multiple trains but only 1 mining outpost, this would seem the best way to handle it so trains aren't stacking up on the main rail. Also don't want to create a stacker at every singled mining outpost.

      I currently trying to figure out a system where once the trains offload, they go to a central output stacker to wait for an open mining outpost. The problem is only releasing as many trains as there are open mining outposts and only sending the right type of train (e.g. Iron Train vs Copper Train).

      ShredGuy99, universal trains, specific res-type stackers(maybe even universal inputs in stacker but specific resource type exits).

      You can't dynamically program trains so this won't work unless you have universal offload... Which may be possible with bot offloading and offloading trains into active provider chests.

    Hi, can you make a combinator classroom video about oil cracking. When glue, light oil or heavy oil is low create glue, light oil or heavy oil. Otherwise create petroleum. Because you explain so well it would be easy to understand.

    Dont hate me but i am coming with some constructive criticism. It would be great if you explained what every combinator do (how are signals processed from one combinator to another and what that does). You said exactly how it should be set, but i would like to know exactly how it works so i can simply go and modify it.
    Anyway, great vid man, I love this kind of tutorials. Keep em coming please :)

      ***** Yeah I had some people on the stream say the same thing... My decision to break it into two videos was 1: Some folks like shorter videos 2: Some folks only want to see how to build it and don't care how it works 3: This is the big reason... It takes me about 5 hours to do 1 minute of video. So in order to get a video out now as opposed to two months later, I thought it would be a good idea to break the video up!

    ShredGuy99 i have 4 oile tanks at my train stop, each have 1 pump, that's pumping oile to my base.
    Problem: My train cant unload its oile, because only the first tank is getting used, the other 3 doesn't.
    Question: How do i circuit the pumps, so they empty the 4 tanks equally into my base?

      I probably wouldn't use combinators in this situation... Connect all the tanks together and use one pump to pump the oil to your base. The tanks will then unload evenly.

    Hi , I customized your layout for this trains station, I made it so they have exit to not shared like in your case. But I have small problem which keeps bugging me. In your video you said leave a space for one train betwen train stations and train stacker, well I made it same but the trains goes there and sits there insstead waiting in train stacker , can you help me solve this problem ? I want all trains wait at trains stacker not between .

    my stacker brings in random materials to my main bus any way to sort them to each track on the stacker?

      Not really unless the trains are item specific. For example: Iron Train, Copper Train, Coal Train. If that's the case, you can use "pre-stations" in your stacker so the so the trains go where they are supposed to go.

    I am playing .15 with angels and bobs mod on. Is there a way to transport the entire 75k of liquid (A) out of the same train tanker and fill it with 75k of liquid (B) from the same stop controlling pumps via circuit conditions? (edit It can be done! But its buggy if you get less than 1 and more than 0 because the circuit network sees any fraction of a number as 0)

      You can do that in vanilla? Just make two tank carts or better yet split one into three separate inventories.

      Sorry I should have been more specific. I'm not trying to use more than the 2 tankers already attached to the train I want to input sludge and pull waste water into the same tankers without adding more cars to the train. So far this is what I have figured out... I need to double up the train stop orders and here is a picture imgur.com/a/IcnWh
      Another problem Im having is Fluids are not always integers alot of the time Ill have .2 stuck in the wagon I tried multiplying the train station output but I think the circuit system sees .2 as 0 as well and 100X0 is still 0.

      In the cart UI you can separate the tanks into separate inventories, this doesn't add any weight and you don't need another car. Honestly I don't understand what you're doing as it looks like you're inputting and exporting the same item at one station.

      I understand the splitting UI however I wanted to use the entire 150k capacity that turns into 90k waste (1.2 trailers) which is why it would be ideal to use both tankers
      Station A: pictured (inputs)creates crystal and slag slurry, and (extracts) processes sulfur waste
      Station B: (extracts)processes the crystal and slag slurry and (inputs) creates sulfur waste 50:30
      Ive got it figured out now to the point that it should work but keep getting stuck by a residual amount

      You can separate the individual tanks on the fluid wagon. So theoretically you could move fluid from one tank to another tank at a station. I never have had the need to do this, but it seem plausible. However you can't have an input pump and an output pump going to the same tank connection. I haven't play BobsAngels in 0.15, but this is how it works in vanilla and I wouldn't imagine it's different for BobsAngels.

      It's better to not let a train *into* a station than to disable the station itself.
      Reason being if the unloader is "full", then all the stations will be disabled, causing any train that's on its way there will shut off and give you a "no path" error. At worst, this means you now have a train potentially blocking a whole rail line if it's a shared one, and at best no other ore train(s) can get to the stacker's "safe" waiting area, or leave the ore patch if they're at one.
      TL;DR A "full" unloader would just become non-existant to trains and they'll stop wherever they may be at the time until the unloader is "low" again.

    There's no circuit network necessary. Just add an extra stop just between the stacker and the stations. Name it "Iron ore Staging" or something, that way instead of deciding which station to go to from clear across the map, where they're likely to pick the same one, they pick one that's empty just as they get there.

      Nothing will be accomplished by adding an intermediary station. The closest stations will still have priority if empty. Hence NOT a balanced train station.

    I've followed this tutorial twice now, but I can't get it to work. The signals to the unloading stations are red. I tried putting in some ores in the connected chests but then the signal flips out and keeps turning it on/off multiple times in a second. The signals are still red when the station is empty.
    I have no idea whats going on... I've made a blueprint of my setup, maybe if you have time (or someone else) could look through it and see whats wrong? Playing on 0.15.11 vanilla no mods. Blueprint: gitlab.com/snippets/1662522

    The only issue I have with this build is when the stations are already balanced it appears it will cause a condition where trains don't unload efficiently.

      Pick your poison: Trains offload efficiently (only leave when empty) or Train stations are balanced (all stations remain within a certain tolerance).

    I am not sure I understand the logic behind the "Full" quantity condition, as you are closing the station when you have have more than 8k Iron in the whole offload (meaning 2k per station) while each station can store over 14k with 6 steel chests. In other words, it looks like you are closing the station while each chest contains 333 ore =14% of its storage capacity.

      I agree with you both. I usually run my train stations so that they are no long available when the storage available is less than the amount a single train will hold and will completely unload a train when available. This makes it so I don't have nearly full trains going back into the rail system wasting fuel and time.

      I agree that this episode got a little more complicated a little sooner than I would have liked. And I made this build a lot more complicated than it really needs to be so it would work in my base.
      Hopefully it will all "de-complicate" a little with the next video where I jump into why this works... And why I needed it to work this way.
      That being said... There are a few key "Mini" combinator concepts to really try to understand:
      The signal inverter (11:32)
      The signal isolator (5:31)
      The SR Latch that controls when the trains leave the stacker. This SR Latch works a little different than the SR Latch in Episode 4 so it's worth taking a closer look at both and understanding, not only how they work, but the differences between the two. (2:56)

      aboriani yes and no. If you lock each stop, then locking the standby (where you put the chain signal) becomes redundant, but it serves as a way to lock the whole station down when it's full.

    but considering any 'train hold' would have to be made part of the 'secured' complex..or guarded in its own right.. or risk havieng you stuck with a bunch of trainlees carts and bitters swarming around em.
    and that all that 'average' input still might risk a brief 'reduced' flowto the foudneries and so forth ...well ,i'd say use the extra materials to just make a large enough safe station with extra stopign space beffore the actuall unload to 'act' as a train stacker ,they all sit ncie and safely with ther loads in your main complex steadely feeding it in 99% of all cases sicne generly if yo uhave say 5 trains ala 5 carts+ each at most 2 will be out to refill at ther armed minning outposts ..givieng a ncie and steady flow for well anything under a 5 belt production line or ?

      Namoth the actual average part should probably be changed around. Locking a station until it has room for a full load it's probably a better route, but I can see using the average would help if the trains have a long way to go and will probably be able to unload with little slow down during the wait.
