  • This is a quick demonstration of a simple method to tie the Alpine Butterfly knot -- also known as the Butterfly Loop and the Lineman Loop. There is also a brief discussion of a useful, emergency/survival application for this knot. There are also short explanations of Minimum Breaking Strength vs. Safe Working Load for ropes, and knot efficiency.

    Thanks for sharing this excellent method. Super easy both to learn and to teach! First watched this a few months back and have been showing and sharing to anybody who is interested ever since ... and even a few who weren't interested at all! 😪 😅

    Thank you for your fantastic new way of learning how to tie the alpine butterfly knot, sir. I am 74 years old now and have moved into a condo.
    We have lots of earthquakes here and fires in this county.
    So t thought that I could tie the knots (that I learned in Green Beret school 40 years ago) needed to escape from my 31 floor condo unit. I could only remember some. So I took up watching UTube videos to re teacher myself.
    Thank you for your helping me learn Sir.

    I was taught this knot back about 1970 by a lady who was an experienced rock climber. I rediscovered it last yeat and have taught it to several farmer/ rancher types and friends who mess with ropes and heavy cords in their outdoor activities. A great and useful knot to know.

    Wow, I like it! There are many videos showing the wrap around your hand three times for making the Alpine Butterfly knot. Some show taking the middle wrap, top wrap, or taking the bottom wrap, then pulling it through the others; which one is correct. Very much I like yours best, easy-peasy lemon-squeezy.

    Thanks a lot for sharing this nice little trick!
    I've seen the general method that's used here a lot - even on Wikipedia, just without this neat usage of the thumb and index finger to keep the "loop on a loop" in place more easily. It's absolutely genius!
    One little thing I've noticed at 05:37 is that you're saying "one turn to the right [...] one turn to the left". You're twisting the rope in the same direction both times, therefore it results in a proper alpine butterfly. However, if you follow the verbal instructions and twist it in two different directions, it will result in a "false butterfly", which at the first glance looks pretty similar, but has very inferior properties.

    I've been using this method for a while, and I've found I can leave out one step. When making the second twist, there's really no need to pull the loop over the index finger. Its faster to pull it back towards you, over the thumb, and down to the crossing point where you do the tuck. I find I can go from the first twist to the tuck point in one smooth, easy motion. The exception might be super stiff cord, and/or thicker than an inch.

    Excellent! I like to be know how to tie a knot in different ways - and this is a very different and unusual way to tie the alpine butterfly. Also informative is the discussion on using the knot to isolate a bad spot in the rope. I did find the video a little difficult to follow : partly I think because the part where the finger loop is formed is partially hidden on the 'palm' side of the left hand, and I had to replay, and stop and start the video numerous times to figure out how it was properly done. Also towards the end of the video he said to turn to the left to form the finger loop. I found that twisting to the right, in the same direction used to form the thumb loop, worked best. The suggestion to tighten the knot by pulling vertically, then horizontally also very good : that definitely helps to produce a cleaner knot. Overall, I am very grateful for having learned this new way of forming the alpine butterfly!

    Quick correction at 5:40 or so: The statement was " one turn to the right and one turn to the left". In fact , both turns went in the SAME direction. If you do the two turns in opposite directions, the resulting knot sort of looks like a butterfly, but it's not as secure and could work loose.

    • @tjwiltube
      @tjwiltube  ปีที่แล้ว

    The Alpine Butterfly should never be used to make safe a bad rope. The Alpine Butterfly decreases the rope strength to about 50% which is much lower then some of the safest knots/bands.
    The strongest of all bands is the Double Eight which reduces strength to 80%, so if the rope is damaged then cut it and tie it by using the Double Eight band.

    • @tjwiltube
      @tjwiltube  9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      FYI, I emphasized using the Alpine Butterfly to repair a bad spot in a rope for "emergency" or a "survival" situation; not as a general practice for routine use. I also pointed out, the typical efficiency of a well tied Alpine Butterfly is about 65% (better than your asserted 50%, but still pointed out as a caution). If the Alpine Butterfly is not suitable for a quick emergency repair, then - given your train of thought -- it should never be used for any purpose. Given these caveats, I disagree with your "should never be used" comment. Sorry.
