How To Plug A Motorcycle Tire | MC GARAGE

  • Nails, screws, and glass-there’s lots of stuff lurking on the street just waiting to stab a hole in your tire Thankfully, most modern motorcycles are equipped with tubeless tires that are actually pretty easy to plug. Ari Henning gives step-by-step instruction for using a rope plug and C02 inflators to fix a flat.
    It’s important to carry a quality tire-repair kit with you when you ride, and just as importantly, know how to use it!

    Only a temporary solution until you can get a new tire. Rope plugs can wick moisture into the tire causing the belts to corrode. Also, plugging a speed rated tire voids it's speed rating since you are sure to damage the belts during the repair.

  • @UVjoint
    @UVjoint 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry to nitpick, but when the screw was drilled into the tire, it was pretty flush with it, whereas when it was pulled out, it was sticking out enough that the pliers could grip it. Would that happen automatically? Or would I have to let out a little bit of the air to make the sharp object stick out enough to grip it? Or just try to press into the tire with a nose plier to hopefully get a hold of it?

In my case I bought s brand new tire because I have run about 120 miles since I got a valve stem (not a screw) yeah you heard me right, a valve stem in my tire and it went all the way in and it was hard to pull out but I got it fixed with one of these plugs but I stop so often to check the tire and to make sure that plug is not trying to come out so I have lost all my confidence in that tire. Thank God it's only an R3 and I don't find it necessary to speed so much for right now since I'm only learning although I feel pretty confident already but still I'm taking my time and experience on the bike very seriously

      I’ve used plugs on motorcycle and automobile tires. They last as long as you shave the plug like he mentioned. No side walling patching and I would consider the speed rating no longer applicable to the tire. You can even plug without glue but I’m sure glue helps in different pressure situations and off road.

    • @MicJaguar
      @MicJaguar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ThunderWindz The screw probably went in while the tire was hot and the rubber molded around it and sealed. I had this happen on my car. I have as Veloster with summer sticky tires here in San Antonio. I got a large screw in it and I heard it leaking at a stop light followed by thbe tick tock tick as the head tapped the ground. I pulled over and it had stopped. I aired it up and was going to take it the next day to get it patched but forgot. I drove on it for probably a month before it started losing air again. My guess is the tire molded around it but when the colder season rolled in it hardened the rubber and began leaking again. Wouldn't want to risk it on a bike though.

      Nirmal Kumar taking the tyre out
      And put a " mushroom" plug from inside out
      This plug is made is made of rubber and comes in different sizes depending on the hole size.

    Can we just carry a spare tire in the backpack?

    I did this for my cbr.
    I felt i cought a wire when i inserted the plug.
    What can happen? Is it safe to ride?
    It hasn't leaked any air.

    its beter to try and plug it first because then you can get it plugged the tightest

    That would be nice to see a CO2 cartridge be used since this is MC Garage and you just drilled a hole into your tire.

    ..or run over a big ass screw that plugs itself :D
    (this happened to me on my old Disco, ran over a freaking ZEUS fitting off my honda's front fairing. got a *taptaptaptaptaptaptap* like a rock was stuck in my tread, but that little quarter turn bolt was holding air so hey!
