Interesting takes, as usual. Very much enjoy your channel. It is interesting when you come across something that sounds sorta like fusion or prog when it's supposed to be something completely different. For me it was Punch Brothers, who are usually typed as bluegrass. I am a hard core prog/fusion guy that didn't have a lot of interest in bluegrass (except for an admiration of the musicianship). Then I heard these guys (with a somewhat traditional lineup of mandolin/banjo/fiddle/bass/guitar) playing stuff that seemed to be as much influenced by Yes and Gentle Giant as Bill Monroe. Maybe check out "Familiarity", "Angel of Doubt" or "All Ashore".

Some cool choices there Andy. I can't believe it's nearly thirty years since the Jon Hassell recording was released. Still sounds like its from the future! All the best to You and Yours for the festive season!

Really good call on the Jon Hassell/Blue Screen album. Bought it when it came out in the early 1990's and loved it. Jon Hassell's "Fourth World Volume 2: Dream Theory In Malaya" is another great one as is his live recording, "The Surgeon of the Nightsky Restores Dead Things Through the Power of Sound". Jon is an all-time favorite. As you put it: Jon sounds like the wind.

Wow. Lots to explore here. Just been checking out Meshell Ndegeocello's 'The Womb/The Way' after watching this. Will pursue her music further, as well as all the other artists and albums. Keep 'em coming, whether they smell funny or not. Thanks Andy!

I've just subscribed because of your love for Narada. Unsung Beast.
Really nice selection especially the Jimmy Chamberlain Complex.
I saw an interview with him which made sense of his drumming especially on SP "Machina" album. Fat kit sound.
Love Hassell but preferred Miles Davis on the "Do Bop" album for that Jazz meets Hip-Hop (to piss off the purist) thing.
I'm wondering if you've heard any of the David Sancious albums with Ernest [Born To Run] Carter on drums. I recommend "True Stories" album. Thanks Andy.

Just banged on Nuyorican in the background. It’s so good. As a soul survivor of the ‘90s, who took way too many substances, when I should’ve been focused on music, etc., I hold up my hands and say: “Awright”.

I remember that Nuyorican Soul album... it really is what all house music should sound like (a lot of the older house was more jazzy back in the day!). The version of Black Gold of the Sun is great (though not a patch on the original by Rotary Connection) and I also the versions of Nautilus and Sweet Tears are top notch... I remember seeing MAW live back in the 90s or 2000s and it was really nice to hear dance music with some soul/jazz influences..

The best (insert category) musicians in the world "should" be pushing the limits. Jon Hassel influences ANY player who hears him, like Eno.

Hey Andy, I was interested in your comments about the Jimmy Chamberlain album and it’s grunge undertones. That got me thinking about an incredible album you might find fascinating. Whenever I have turned people onto it I always prepared them by saying it is very grungy Lifetime type fusion, no other words adequately describe its uniqueness.
The album is Let’s Be Generous by Joachim Kuhn, and the link to Lifetime is Tony Newton on bass. The incredible Miroslav Tadic is on guitar and he really goes to some far out places. What an amazing musician he is, I last saw him with the Grandmothers of Invention, where he played multiple parts simultaneously with an incredible finger style technique. Finally, Mark Nauseef is on drums.
Here is a track from the album, and if you search it most of the other tracks are on YT: th-cam.com/video/hePu3dnuL00/w-d-xo.html
    Cheers 🎼🤘🏻

@@fusionfan6883 If you listen to the whole of that album it gets pretty twisted. I have akways thought that the funkiest music is within the fusion genre, not the funk genre and I might do a video on the funk in fusion.

@@AndyEdwardsDrummer Now you are talking my language! I love fusion funk and can bore for Britain on the subject, so if ever you want to do a double header let me know. I used to DJ funk and Latin, with an emphasis on the more fusion styles. Of course there is early George Duke (RIP Maestro), then you had the stable of artists who were produced by Wayne Henderson, and then we have bands that were so musically accomplished they couldn’t help but introduce some jazz into their playing such as the mighty Tower of Power and the irreplaceable Earth, Wind and Fire. And then of course we had the whole U.K. Acid Jazz scene, but one of its progenitors is definitely a desert island artist for me , the unstoppable and irreplaceable Brian Auger! The Breckers are of course in a category of their own, and Heavy Metal Be Bop is one of the most fiery live albums I have ever heard. And don’t get me going on Latin fusion……..that could be a whole other video. Anyway have a funky Xmas🎼🤘🏻🎄
