For Al starting to be drawn back to his body already, I think it's partly just random chance and partly the fact his body doesn't have a soul in it. We see with Barry that they dumped a lab animal soul into his body, so it was already "occupied." But Al's body is empty, just preserved inside the Truth (and thanks to its link with Ed).
The cold is likely screwing with the blood seal and messing with the metal it's adhering to. Basically it's a secret limitation no one would have any reason to normally take into account.
The reason why automail is an issue for the cold because the point of contact between the metal and the stumps will rapidly freeze over, it's like having wet clothes in snow, but much worse. Metal gets really cold really fast, and if you've ever felt your skin freeze, let's just say it's not a fun experience
Regarding earings: "Not if you're just doing it a little bit"... They are in the mountains, in a storm, and there is no place to warm up! Extended strategy! This is not a little bit! This is a lot bit! She should have earmuffs or a hat!
21:58 there’s also the fact that the metal is connected to Ed’s skin. The thermal conductivity would’ve killed him if the Major General didn’t let him in the fort.
I checked the coldest temperatures in NY over the past 50 years. And they never went below -20 Celsius. And it rarely ever went to -15. So it's not cold.
Here we go again. Will you guys be reacting to the bloopers once you finish the series? Also, not many people react to these but I recommend watching the 4-Koma shorts as well.
Your channel is wonderful, I always watch the discussions to understand together with you, I'm watching fullmetal alchemist for the first time with you
The problem with the automail in the storm is the cold, not it jamming the gears, metal in super sub-zero will adhere itself to your skin.... think licking a metal poll in winter but for every bit of skin touching the metal, also the metal will freeze the area it is touching and that will give you frostbite. That's why they needed a composite carbon alloy in the north rather then steel.
yeah, some folks have mentioned it already, but the main problem with Automail and extremely low temps is less the mechanics, and more the steel-on-flesh contact, and the nerve endings connected therein. If frostbite forms there and there’s no quick way to warm up or detach the arm, necrosis could eventually set in and you’d *really* be in deep trouble
The reason Automail is bad is because its metal on skin. like with Winry's earrings. prolonged exposer to sub zero temperatures will cause frost bite to the areas touching metal.
One of the reasons armor used fine and auto mail isn’t is because there’s no inherent skin to metal contact in armor. You can easily wrap up and wear armor. But with auto mail there’s no barrier, so that ice cold meta could damage the skin and possibly nerves where it connects.
22:15 I mean enough icing would probably imobilize Al too, but yes since he has fewer small parts he is much less prone to be imobilized by the cold than automail is.
the issue with the cold up up north when it comes to metal is when it's in direct contact with the skin, i.e. Ed's automail and WInry's earrings. Al has no skin, he is just metal moving magically he doesn't feel cold
I guess with the earings it dependends on the metal. If the earings are contacting the ear it can conduct the body temperature away. Now these are like sub zero temperatures. Al should be perfectly fine as long as no moisture gets in his joints and freezes him. I remember from the "original" series Al also had to be very careful about getting into water.
At least if Winry is held by Scar, she knows him more. And knows he actually won't hurt her. She can sense he's not evil i think, even if he killed her parents. Rather him, than the government and people like Kimblee and Bradley
If you are willing to do subtitled anime, then SpyxFamily is current and popular for good reason. Also, Komi-san wa Komyushou. If you aren't willing to do subtitles, then the English dub for Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex is outstanding.
Oh, also! Make sure you watch the doors of truth. The more details present on them is directly represent of that person's knowledge. This won't be said later but it's a really cool detail.
The problem that automail runs into is that you have cold metal directly connecting to the flesh and nerves of the wearer which can cause brutal localized frostbite. The same applies to Winry's earrings. The temperatures in Briggs during a snow storm are significantly lower than anything you'd encounter in New York.
The problem with the cold is that Automail touches flesh. So if it freezes you run the strong risk of frostbite. This doesn’t happen if you lack flesh entirely.
10:00 tell that to Mustang, there's one thing equal to a human life, another human life. KIlling one person to protect another could be seen as equivalent exchange. But Ed doesn't buy that, to him killign and having someone die because you are unable to save them are not equal.
Ok, that’s my time to geek out about it. The extreme cold does affect Alphonse. Up until this point his armor body haven't rejected his soul. Barry noticed his organic body was rejecting the foreigner soul through its advanced decomposing signs, which happened bc they were incompatible (the whole conclusion) and that's what the seals is for, to bind them together. However, the original body keeps trying to pull the original soul back, that’s why both Barry's Body and Soul die simultaneously: I. Organic body controlled by foreigner soul severed the seal binding the original soul to the armor body; II. Original soul left armor body into organic body forcing foreigner soul to leave; III. Organic body was life incompatible/unfit to live, thus making original soul to pass. While Barry's armor body only rejected his soul after his organic body severed the blood seal, same with The Slicer's Brothers, when the seals got severed their souls started to get rejected, cuz they couldn't bind them properly. Point is, blood seal is organic material in contact with inorganic metal. There's a phenomenon called thermal expansion/compression in which changes in temperature causes matter to change its dimensions while maintaining it's state, cuz their molecules either grow tighter (cold) or looser (warm), since this change happens in the window between changes of states of matter it's specifically noticeable in inorganic materials that have high points of fusion, such as metal. (google Eiffel Tower summer growth) By entering a snow storm in place so cold it's 365 days a year covered in snow and frozen Al's metal body decreases in temperature linearly quick, however the blood seal doesn't catch up with the dimension's changes nor it's speed, and this causes micro inconsistencies between the materials and is likely the reason his soul begins to be rejected. They always made a point to not mess with the armor part where the seal is so much, since changes in density (thinning the metal) could cause a rejection. The Show's about alchemy, and uses tooo many real physical and chemical concepts, for this not to be the case. Not to mention the timing.
The freezing is an issue for Frostbite from the auto-mail touching flesh If you were wearing Plate Armour, you have an extra layer for cushioning Al just has no flesh to freeze regardless
I think the Problem with the Automail was less that it wouldn't work and more that It endangerd the connecting tissue. The cold makes it freeze onto the connected skin and that is the real issue. but al doesn't have that problem, there is no skin it can freeze to.
Gotta remember this isnt our world. We dont know how cold it is outside. We can only infer from the other that have specifically metal that isn’t good with contact with skin for a long period of time.
8:48 A small moment, but we see that even this far in the series, Ed isn't a perfect person. Hes easily blinded by emotion and even though rationally he knows they need scar he's willing to let his ego get ahead of that and try to turn him in.
Don't know how the French version sounds in French, but if I'm going off the english translation I like the dwarf one. it just rolls off the tongue better and sounds cooler.
Exactly. In an urban environment, at the very least you have tall buildings around to block a minor amount of a cold. But out in the wilderness? In the mountains? Zero protection. It's absolutely not the same as being in a city.
The blood seal Edd used to tether Als soul was was only temporary for what he paid since he had no way of bringing back the soul properly into its own body which was used as a cost for the failed transmutation of there mother. The body is no longer in the mortal plane and the bond between the body and the soul was never really broken cause its to great of a thing to do for what Edd knew even with the glimpse at the Thuth. What Edd did was basically stench the connection like a rubber band pin it on the armor with the blood seal but like a rubber band it will pull back trying to go into its natural form. Those who open the portal have a greater knowledge inherent therefore a greater power than even lifelong skilled alchemist though only skilled alchemist can. Also i think it establishes a greater connection to the realm beyond the physical were Truth lies to Truth it self.
It's definitely detrimental to have metal based jewelry on in sub zero temperatures. Places like Russia, for example, make it almost impossible to even wear glasses in some areas because the frames start to freeze to the skin.
Lmao at the face you made at the earring situation. Upstate New York is NOT trekking through literal mountains. This is also shown to be a much colder place than New York. Think Siberia, not New York. Once again, you show a very smug side
I think after you are done with Brotherhood you should also watch the original show. There is of course a lot of overlap but there is enough differences between the two that I think it would be interesting to have you discuss how the two series manage to tell very different stories. The original series is caped off by a movie which adds an interesting twist as well.
One could say that Edward has been guilty of this kind of double standard for a while. For Scar, his killings are deemed to be inexcusable, because they affected people that Edward knows personally. But everything that Amestris has stolen from Ishval? He doesn't keep the same energy, knowing that Mustang, Hawkeye, and Hughes have all killed far more people than Scar did.
Al needs to pass through the portal of truth in order to get his body back. If he attempted to reunite with his body without going through the portal he will die. So seeing his body was not a good thing.

something that irritates me about ed is the selective indignation, sometimes it seems that he completely forgets about the genocide protagonized by his friends and superiors, made under a false pretext
he hates scar so much but never even questioned his friends that killed civilians, innocent women and children (and mustang is my favourite character but still)
I think Ed has to the self awareness to say that he’s ignorant to the Ishvalan War and just how awful it was. He knows Mustang, Armstrong, Hughes, and Hawkeye committed atrocities. But he understands that they were put in a difficult position and didn’t have the power to just walk away from the military. Same reason why he joined the military even though he’s allowed to killing. And at least they’ve shown regret and want to atone for what they’ve done. Before this point Scar just murdered everyone in his way without any reasoning.
He’s acknowledged it plenty but Scar has tried killed Ed who’s had nothing to do with the war and he’s also killed Winrys parents (people he had a close and personal connection with) who were helping ishavanlins. Of course he’s gonna see scar completely differently
@@Austin.Kilgore the thing is, it doesn’t seem to bother him the fact that his friends helped in a genocide, but only the fact that they might have to pay for it after it all ends. my main problem is, scar only killed winry’s parents because of what the military did, and the moment he killed then, he was almost delusional given what had happened to him. i didn’t expect ed to be bff with scar, but because of all the context scar was in, i hoped at least a change into a more understanding point of view, scar actually shows that he isn’t just blindly killing everyone, he only goes after the military (which to me is fair) and in fact, he would have left winry kill him cause he knows the mistakes he has made. but ed, when confronted by miles a few episodes back for example, tries to counter argument as if it exists any excuse for genocide, and he knows the conflict was completely forged but still… in the end, even tho he didn’t participate in the war, but he was a dog of the military and he would have been used to do many atrocities in their name, just like mustang, hawkeye, armstrong, hughs and many others did
“He’s a mass murderer” okay and? Like Kimbley and the others aren’t even worse? At least Scar isn’t going to try and kill all of you at the earliest convenience
Glad that other people are of this opinion. Edward has a far worse opinion of Scar because he's responsible for the deaths of people that he knew. But he holds no such resentment toward any Amestrian soldier who he knows who have killed FAR more than Scar has, because the deaths of Ishvalans have nothing to do with him. I'm not saying that this is an ethnicity thing, but it's indicative of how Edward displays a very common double standard.
I really love this anime but this was one of the worst episodes for me because Edward and Alphonse were too unreasonable in their reasons for their decisions. Because they want to hand Scar over to Kimblee so that Kimblee can kill Scar, and they want to give a chance of life to the two soldiers who killed who knows how many people, and brothers want to spare them because they think that every life is important while they want to send Scar to his death, even after knowing that they need him, and that it has to be repeat it to them several times even when they heard all the reasons the first time they were told. What I hate is that characters who are smart, and able to think logically, and even in a situation against their emotions like with Kimblee, while here they have a chance to solve all the problems, and just want to throw that opportunity out the window because they decided to be idiots in this episode.
Goes to show you everyone has a flaw. In the end of the day when its personal it does cloud your judgment. That why it took the others to call out that error, they need Scar. For Ed and Al they hate the man who killed their family because Winry is family to them. It shows you Ed and Al are still immature and ignorant but they grow from it.
@@andreay9935 But it's as if they didn't even hear the conversation between Scar and Major Miles, as if Miles's word had no weight, when Miles believes word of Scar, it's as if no one has an opinion except the two brothers, although more Edward who seems to have the need to threaten Scar for some reason, that Edward was going to do something to him even after he heard that Scar made a promise that they could take his word after swearing in his ishvalan blood. And yes Edward has no reason to take his word for it, and that he hates Scar for killing Winry's parents, but he could trust Major Miles on his assurance that they can trust Scar.
@@PetarSon I hear you, and I also didn't like how they acted, but that why it's show you even they are not immune to getting emotional and not thinking straight.

You are the reason Winry's parents were killed you are the one to blame!" that's the biggest reason why I was annoyed by this episode as if they emotionally degraded in episode 22 and I know they are young and this can change quickly like a radio station especially in their heads because of emotions but it still annoys me.
I hate this episode. All this moral superiority over Scar is literally insane -- everything he's done has been justified. They literally had to make him randomly responsible for the Rockbells' deaths to make any of his storyline even remotely plausible. "I don't forgive your wanton murder!" Nothing wanton about it. Military invaded, annexed his country, annihilated his family and race; now he's attacking that same military. "He's a mass murderer!!" Kimblee has killed hundreds of people but he's preferred to watch over Winry, yeah, OK.
Kimblee isn't "preferred", he is a psychopath who can destroy a city block with a round of applause. He was holding her hostage to ensure Ed and Al's compliance.
@@LoricSwift I know, and him killing them doesn't make sense, so they came up with this blind rage, wrong place wrong time scenario to justify putting Scar's perspective morally beneath the Elrics'. It's always felt cheap and transparent to me. Keeps a good story from being great.

7:50 No. Olivia did because she wanted to know about Alchestry and as a favor for Ed and Al.
Jesus god, when Montana drops a contemptuous look that is absolutely withering!
Episode 40 will be great 🤗 I can't wait to see their reaction
One of my favorite episodes! LESS GOO
16:05 New York isn't the same as Canada or one of the Poles.
I checked the coldest temperatures in NY over the past 50 years. And they never went below -20 Celsius. And it rarely ever went to -15. So it's not cold.
Yeah Briggs looks a lot colder!
It’s cold… lol just not as cold as here in the show
Here we go again. Will you guys be reacting to the bloopers once you finish the series? Also, not many people react to these but I recommend watching the 4-Koma shorts as well.
The boopers are kinda lame
@@2011carp Thats just like ... your opinion man.
When Kenny misspoke at the start (0:26 "Scar being held by Winry") I _immediately_ thought of that 4-Koma short XD
@@2011carpbloopers are hilarious
"Scar being held by Winry" lol I laughed unexpectedly by imagining it
Your channel is wonderful, I always watch the discussions to understand together with you, I'm watching fullmetal alchemist for the first time with you
The problem with the automail in the storm is the cold, not it jamming the gears, metal in super sub-zero will adhere itself to your skin.... think licking a metal poll in winter but for every bit of skin touching the metal, also the metal will freeze the area it is touching and that will give you frostbite. That's why they needed a composite carbon alloy in the north rather then steel.
At this point you must realize Kimbley's hat creation transmutation ability is God tier
yeah, some folks have mentioned it already, but the main problem with Automail and extremely low temps is less the mechanics, and more the steel-on-flesh contact, and the nerve endings connected therein.
Love that the kimeras are friends before they were turned
13:30 Technically Scar is not a mass murderer he's a serial killer. Mas murderers kill many people at once or during a very short period of time.
the issue with the cold up up north when it comes to metal is when it's in direct contact with the skin, i.e.
Oh wait I did forget that in armor the joints are normally connect with leather and that is at least the some with AL.
It’s crazy the 2003 and 2009 anime are both so good in their own respects even if brotherhood has the better ending and build up
OMG NEXT EPISODE!!!!!!!!! So many questions answered.
At least if Winry is held by Scar, she knows him more. And knows he actually won't hurt her. She can sense he's not evil i think, even if he killed her parents. Rather him, than the government and people like Kimblee and Bradley
(At 19:19) I like the conversation between these two.
Comment below which anime we should watch next!
If you are willing to do subtitled anime, then SpyxFamily is current and popular for good reason. Also, Komi-san wa Komyushou.
If you aren't willing to do subtitles, then the English dub for Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex is outstanding.
Code geass
When they started talking about seeing their family again the teaaaaaa 🤣🤣 like damn
Well, Ed promised the next time he made her cry they’d be tears of joy
The problem with the cold is that Automail touches flesh. So if it freezes you run the strong risk of frostbite. This doesn’t happen if you lack flesh entirely.
11:50 They put Yoki's story in 2003 FMA. So they just summarize it so it wouldn't be redundant.
However, the original body keeps trying to pull the original soul back, that’s why both Barry's Body and Soul die simultaneously:
I. Organic body controlled by foreigner soul severed the seal binding the original soul to the armor body;
II. Original soul left armor body into organic body forcing foreigner soul to leave;
III.
(google Eiffel Tower summer growth)
By entering a snow storm in place so cold it's 365 days a year covered in snow and frozen Al's metal body decreases in temperature linearly quick, however the blood seal doesn't catch up with the dimension's changes nor it's speed, and this causes micro inconsistencies between the materials and is likely the reason his soul begins to be rejected. They always made a point to not mess with the armor part where the seal is so much, since changes in density (thinning the metal) could cause a rejection.
The Show's about alchemy, and uses tooo many real physical and chemical concepts, for this not to be the case. Not to mention the timing.
The freezing is an issue for Frostbite from the auto-mail touching flesh
If you were wearing Plate Armour, you have an extra layer for cushioning
Al just has no flesh to freeze regardless
Excited for you to see the next episode 'the dwarf in the flask' my favorite episode.
Lol thinking NY in winter is cold…. This is like northern Siberia levels of cold. 😂
I think the Problem with the Automail was less that it wouldn't work and more that It endangerd the connecting tissue. The cold makes it freeze onto the connected skin and that is the real issue. but al doesn't have that problem, there is no skin it can freeze to.
Empathy, empathy, empathy, this show is all about empathy.
And also killing fascists. Based show.
Gotta remember this isnt our world. We dont know how cold it is outside. We can only infer from the other that have specifically metal that isn’t good with contact with skin for a long period of time.
Auto-mail is also connected to flesh so anything flesh, steel n ice isnt good
8:48
A small moment, but we see that even this far in the series, Ed isn't a perfect person. Hes easily blinded by emotion and even though rationally he knows they need scar he's willing to let his ego get ahead of that and try to turn him in.
Cannot wait for next episode and the back story!
It was armstrong who ordered they bring in may to learn about militeristic alkehestry
Which is better? “The dwarve in the flask” or “The thing in the flask”(French version)?
Don't know how the French version sounds in French, but if I'm going off the english translation I like the dwarf one. it just rolls off the tongue better and sounds cooler.
"Thing..."
FAVORITE END THEME ITS SO GOOD!
10:07 Al is a human being. End of story.
This isn't upstate New York cold
This is Canada/Finland/Russia cold (ignore the Canadian Peninsula, they're not real canadians anyway)
Go to a place what is really cold not a warm winter in New York.
The place they are now is cold you saw the snowstorm and all the show around
It's definitely detrimental to have metal based jewelry on in sub zero temperatures. Places like Russia, for example, make it almost impossible to even wear glasses in some areas because the frames start to freeze to the skin.
Ok, the one more gave me chills. If you know, you now. Ah...
Ed is protective of Winry
the cold isn't bad for gears and stuff, it's bad cause its steel in freezing that is touching flesh
Scar being held by Winry you say?
Things are revving up
I’m so excited for these episodes. I wanna see you guys reaction to the next episode.
Lmao at the face you made at the earring situation. Upstate New York is NOT trekking through literal mountains. This is also shown to be a much colder place than New York. Think Siberia, not New York. Once again, you show a very smug side
Yoki has no purpose being there. He’s just there whether he likes it or not 😆
People hype up episode 40, but personally my favorite moment is in episode 41
I think after you are done with Brotherhood you should also watch the original show. There is of course a lot of overlap but there is enough differences between the two that I think it would be interesting to have you discuss how the two series manage to tell very different stories. The original series is caped off by a movie which adds an interesting twist as well.
i really want you guys to react to the OVA episode about Mustang and Maes Life during military Academy
Obligatory reply to Al's "BUT HE'S A MASS MURDERER!"
SO IS KIMBLEE - AT LEAST SCAR FEELS SOMEWHAT GUILTY! 😶🌫
Winry is such a Anti Sakura. She does so many things like Sakura, but it is so much stronger and more impactfull in her Story, and she avoids Traps Sakura felt into, like uncontrollable Crying.
And the Scar Miles Conversation is so great. Its the Climax of his Ark in a way. Miles is one of the greatest Badass of the Story whitout ever beeing in a Fight.
Considering there completly able to Transform back, the two first Cimeras switching Sides is a bit of a weak Plotpoint. There could explain something about them not beeing able to transform back completly and its just hardly visible. Overall as Charakters they about as entertaining as Barry the Chopper, not important but fun.
They aren’t in their original bodies - yes they can transform but their “non transformed” state still isn’t their original body
Hope you watch the ova's :D there's an ova that kinda shows more about winry's earrings
so since owl house won does that mean the others are dead and not going to be reacted to at all? or will they be on patreon or possibly future reactions?
The owl house will be first, followed by the other shows
something that irritates me about ed is the selective indignation, sometimes it seems that he completely forgets about the genocide protagonized by his friends and superiors, made under a false pretext
he hates scar so much but never even questioned his friends that killed civilians, innocent women and children (and mustang is my favourite character but still)
I think Ed has to the self awareness to say that he’s ignorant to the Ishvalan War and just how awful it was.
@@Austin.Kilgore the thing is, it doesn’t seem to bother him the fact that his friends helped in a genocide, but only the fact that they might have to pay for it after it all ends. my main problem is, scar only killed winry’s parents because of what the military did, and the moment he killed then, he was almost delusional given what had happened to him. i didn’t expect ed to be bff with scar, but because of all the context scar was in, i hoped at least a change into a more understanding point of view, scar actually shows that he isn’t just blindly killing everyone, he only goes after the military (which to me is fair) and in fact, he would have left winry kill him cause he knows the mistakes he has made. but ed, when confronted by miles a few episodes back for example, tries to counter argument as if it exists any excuse for genocide, and he knows the conflict was completely forged but still… in the end, even tho he didn’t participate in the war, but he was a dog of the military and he would have been used to do many atrocities in their name, just like mustang, hawkeye, armstrong, hughs and many others did
That reminds me of near from Death Note or n from Death Note playing with his toys you know n
Alphonse normal body in the gate
0:28 you should really watch 4koma
I like "episode verdict" better. It sounds more catchy and sounds nicer.
All this talk about the sins has me wanting you to watch the 7 deadly sins
the issues with Edward is that he has human flesh
They may be alchemist but still they are teenagers. Sometimes they make reckless decisions based on their feelings.
@@PetarSon I hear you, and I also didn't like how they acted, but that why it's show you even they are not immune to getting emotional and not thinking straight.
@@andreay9935 I just wonder how they would have reacted at that moment if they knew that Winry's parents wouldn't have survived even if scar hadn't killed them since Kimblee was ordered to kill them. And I understand all the reasons that they are still teenagers, and that moments like this are possible, although I always remember that moment when Envy tells Edward how the war started, and how Edward connects all the events, and says "You are the ones who turned Scar into a murderer! and you was.. You are the reason Winry's parents were killed you are the one to blame!" that's the biggest reason why I was annoyed by this episode as if they emotionally degraded in episode 22 and I know they are young and this can change quickly like a radio station especially in their heads because of emotions but it still annoys me.
Let’s gooooooooo
Can you react to hazbin hotel/helluva boss
I hate this episode. All this moral superiority over Scar is literally insane -- everything he's done has been justified. They literally had to make him randomly responsible for the Rockbells' deaths to make any of his storyline even remotely plausible.
"I don't forgive your wanton murder!"
Nothing wanton about it. Military invaded, annexed his country, annihilated his family and race; now he's attacking that same military.
"He's a mass murderer!!"
Kimblee has killed hundreds of people but he's preferred to watch over Winry, yeah, OK.
Kimblee isn't "preferred", he is a psychopath who can destroy a city block with a round of applause. He was holding her hostage to ensure Ed and Al's compliance.
But the Rockbell's weren't with the military, they were helping both sides.
@@LoricSwift I know, and him killing them doesn't make sense, so they came up with this blind rage, wrong place wrong time scenario to justify putting Scar's perspective morally beneath the Elrics'. It's always felt cheap and transparent to me. Keeps a good story from being great.
@@Zombiewithabowtie Yes, I know the story. I was merely pointing out the absurdity of Al wailing "he's a mass murderer!!" when nearly every friend they have can be accurately described in the exact same way. If in that moment the options were Scar or Kimblee, one of those mass murderers murdered way, way more people. Out of sheer bloodlust.
Ed and al just have different morality values even mustang said scar was justified and ed disagreed.
