- I'm sorry, guys - this is a little bit of a cheat post, but hopefully of supplemental benefit. Moises.Ai just went NEXT-LEVEL with their audio isolating algorithms! If you haven't checked it out yet, I highly recommend moises.ai (just enter that into your web browser). They have been making constant upgrades over the last few years, and the technology has gotten to the point of being really, really impressive. Sure, there are still some audio artifacts and clipping, but just within the last couple days, it's gotten to be sooo much more clear and articulate with it's abilities.
Plus, I just discovered that if you download the app on your phone, you can adjust the tempo of the songs and still keep it in the same key. It's a great tool for learning songs and breaking down specific parts - it's amazing how much more accessible monstrous fills can be when you slow them down by 25% and can hear them relatively clearly.
Anyways, I'm posting the isolated drums of Good Times, Bad Times because it's at the point of sounding really close to studio quality in a lot of parts (versus Moises always being a little muddy and missing most of the cowbell in the past). What a freakin' masterpiece!
No paid promotion or anything here. I'm just really loving all the progress that development team is making and think they deserve all the support in the world!
This song is many drummers' nemesis when it comes to not only getting it technically right but to also capture that feel and swing while doing it. And young John Henry Bonham not only does it probably on the first or second take but was also probably hammered while doing so! Lol RIP Bonzo
@Renounce I'm not sure where you read that but Bonham showed up to many recording sessions hammered, or got hammered during them. In fact they had to stop some sessions because he was too drunk or was missing altogether because he was down at the pub. He might have made a statement that being drunk hampers his playing but it didn't stop him.

This is the greatest introduction to the band ever, meaning it was the first track on their first album. Imagine buying this album in 1969, in this being the first song you hear from this group. It showcases each member individually and yet showcases how they were more than a sum of their parts. There will never be another Led Zeppelin.
Hearing the drums on their own they are so creative and musical, funky as hell too!
This triplets on the kick are pure gold!
And in context of the song too…Plant sings about coming of age and the kick drum seems to skip a beat like an anxious heart might
Obviously Bonzo had chops for days but never did he insist on inserting rolls, fills or kick drums where it wasn’t needed
I've been using Moises now for play alongs as well, and I really enjoy it...its great for reducing the original drum track. Thanks for sharing this, pretty wild how it can isolate to this degree. Boy , do those toms sound Slingerland!
DUDE!!! I think just within the last couple days, they made a massive upgrade to their algorithm that is so incredible that I'm still wrapping my brain around how much better it all sounds! It's always been a useful tool, but never claimed to be to an audiophile's ear. When you use it with the web browser now, you can select the "New Generation Algorithms," and it's been night and day in clarity. Admittedly, using this software feels like cheating at this point, but also IT'S A FREAKING DREAM COME TRUE TO HEAR BONHAM PLAYING THIS CLEARLY!!! I've been going back through How The West Was Won with the new settings, and am HAVING MY HEAD EXPLODE WITH EVERY PERFORMANCE!!! And the studio version of 'Black Dog!!!' You can finally hear all his bass drum work!!! The old code gave you a little more of the performance, but now it gives you nearly ALL OF IT!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
@@KickItLikeBonham I'll have to check that out because I have only been using it on my phone. I didn't know that there was actually a browser app. I just used it to isolate the tracks for a video I posted today of 'Fire'. I also just finished editing a video playing along to a 77 soundboard version of IMTOD and it worked out great!

It's funny hearing you find out about the web browser version, as I just finally tried the phone app. I don't think the browser version allows you to change the tempo or give you chord breakdowns, which I was ecstatic about when I discovered that in the app.
We may not be alive when this happens, but they're going to be able to use this technology someday to visually recreate shows like 'How The West Was Won,' in a virtual environment. Using any visual references the developers can get their hands on, they'll be able to create crazy high quality 3D models of Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham, as well as the venue, and then sync up animations to the machine learned sound waves. With a lot of post production work, you'll be able to explore the show from any angle, anywhere in the venue - standing next to the performers or from the back of the auditorium (and everywhere in between). The acoustics will change depending on where you stand, and all you'll need to do is throw on a VR headset and some good headphones. I'll claim Luddite status in any number of regards, but sign me up for that future!!!

My idol. NO ONE has feel like that! Like my teacher, Angelo Stella used to say:"You don't 'play' the drums, you feel them" - Nothing today can come close - Especially this computer generated garbage that is so perfectly right on time - No soul - Like a robot. Mr. Bonham is just behind the beat so perfectly it just gets you every time. There is no drummer like him - in my humble opinion -

Even tho I've heard this song a million times, this is still very impressive. You can appreciate all the feeling nuances, which might not have been so clear with the rest of the instruments.

Right?!?! For all the millions of times listening to this, there are so many little details that are easy to overlook when you've got everything else in there. And for as masterful and commanding as nearly every hit is, you also get to hear what sounds like a mistake when he's doing the triplets between hand and foot during the guitar solo. The phrasing of where he ended that part always sounded interesting to me, and it's easier to hear that it sounds like he just lost the flow on the kick drum for a second. Or, it was intentional and he was trying to syncopate with what Page would play in his guitar solo. Either way, I've fallen more in love with Bonham's performance here, which I didn't think was possible.
At least we can take a little solace knowing he played those fast triplets on a 22" kick instead of the 26". 😲

Well, at just 20 years old Bonham pretty much solidifies who the greatest rock drummer and visionary really is.

There is a recording, not a real high quality one, from 1969 at the Lyceum in London and he plays it just like this, perfect. You can hear people being blown away.

That's a fact! There were drums as the world knew them before "Good Times, Bad Times," was released, and there were the drums as people heard them after that song was released. What he did on that track unleashed a whole cosmos of potential at what that instrument and Bonham might be capable of. Fortunately, he proved to be a universe of creativity and pushing the boundaries of the drums forward...
He was a bricklayer. And a huge Motown fan

Straight up! It is a total anomaly in his output of work to rely so heavily on the cowbell, and then, other than Moby Dick, never utilize it again as a primary rhythm keeper. I've always felt the same way; it's so iconically tied to his reputation (Good Times, Bad Times), but it was like a shooting star in his general approach to the drums.
@@KickItLikeBonhamit isn't just that, it's the fact that he isn't even playing straight 8th notes on the cowbell. Like in Moby dick, he's playing a swinging/ broken 8th note triplet pattern on the cowbell. It's some of his most tasty drumming, and the best representation of his technical skills we've seen from his drumming...it's mind-blowing to me that his most technical drumming occured when he was 19. After this, we mostly just got straight 8th notes with the time keeping, and the broken triplet feel he took care of between the snare and the kick.
I love the sound of a broken triplet pattern on the cymbals, hi hats, cowbell in general..like what you get from Alahna Myles' Black Velvet. So tasty. But this is I why I love Bonham's early drumming so much. It's busier and tighter.
Obvious why Ginger Baker spoke ill of Bonham. Jealous.

@@markkukowski3710 it depends on what you like. I find it hard to compare them, their strength sets are totally different. we saw baker play a variety of styles at a high level, bonham played in Led Zeppelin almost exclusively. Wish we had seen more sides to bonham.
I have one of those hand drums that came with my used kit. The funny thing is if you reverse it and hit on the aluminum shell part, it almost sounds like a cowbell. I also hit the Meinl sucker with sticks, though its for hands,The only problem is mounting the hand drum since it goes in between your legs!
That's a great discovery! Considering how tough it can be to find those goldtone Paiste cowbells, I'd say you're on to something!

In the late 60s and into 1970, Bonham had a habit of playing broken eigth note triplet patterns on the bell of the ride cymbal, and in this song, on the cowbell.
Its hard to hear, but a bit more clear with this isolation. You see loads of covers on TH-cam, and people just click along 8th notes on the cowbell, and to the untrained ear, thats what it sounds like. I just recently discovered that hes swinging away on the cowbell in goodtimes bad times. Hes doing the same thing in moby dick at the royal albert hall in 1970. Not sure why this sort of funk didnt stay with him throughout the 70s.
I could never make my kick drum foot move as fast as his.

I've been thinking about this for years. Why was Bonham the best ever? If you take Neil Peart, he could replicate everything Bonham could do. I'm sure of that. I'm not sure the opposite is true though. So what makes Bonham the best then? I think it was his decision making. Peart would just go as fast as possible with finesse and complexity. Bonham would make a decision as to what unique style of drumming would make a particular song maximize it's potential, without making any conscious attempts to have his drumming steal the show. I think that was his art, and I don't think Peart or anyone else could do that even close to as well as Bonham did. He knew exactly what style and sound of drum playing would sound best for a song and he could do that better than anyone before or since.
Feel and technique. Bonham swung. Peart didn't. Very different but equally masterful

absolutely a single pedal! There were no double pedals in 1969. He did not use two bass drums.
