I am also a Melissa. After many years of struggling to conceive, we finally were expecting our child. While we were anxiously awaiting her birth, I had a call from a dear friend who said she was driving and heard this song and it made her smile( and tear up) because she knew how happy I was. She actually pulled over and recorded it and left it for me to enjoy on her phone message. I had never thought anything special of my name. But, each time I hear this song, I can't help but to smile and thank my Savior, Jesus Christ for answering our prayer for our daughter, and, for the blessings of having a friend who supported me through that long journey! Have a wonderful day, everyone. May we all continue to find joy and happiness as we appreciate the musical talents of The Allman Brothers!

And here we are now possibly shedding a tear maybe not at the same time but i think we can all relate to this song because while it talks about Melissa to me, the song is about not being able to control life and having to deal with making bad decisions and just wishing things were different but finding solace in just being, and maybe loving another person and finding hope in them, when we lose it in our self
I never liked my name, (Melissa) so i ended up shortening it to Mell but after this song i fell inlove with my full name and now i know just how beautiful my name is.❤️❤️
For some reason this song brings tears to my eye's ...............every-time I meet someone named Melissa..............this how I remember there name cause they are always sweet. You could be named Joan like that crazy bitch Crawford LOL.
I am a Melissa, named long before this song for my Greek grandmother. Melissa means Honey Bee. I love my name, but when I was at school in Liverpool for a year, a professor only called me 'Mel.' Everyone and everything in Liverpool has a 'nick' and there was nothing I could do about it. All my classmates called me that and I really hated it. It reminded me of a mechanic's name or a guy who ran a diner in an old TV show. But... I learned to appreciate having a Liverpool nickname. My old friends from there still call me Mel and I still sign all my emails to them with it.
This was my late husband's favorite song. We played it at his funeral and two years later, my middle son had it played before his wedding while wearing a corsage that had a photo of his Dad. Needless to say, the tears flowed in memory of his Dad who was there even if we couldn't see him.
When we were young, I thought this music would just always keep coming. Now Im old, I appreciate the hell I was there to hear & experience it fresh and new. And God bless all those who created it for is, and those of us who listened. This was the soundtrack of our lives. Roll on brothers... and sisters. Time to go... 😔
I never realized how many of us Melissa's were named after this song! My sweet Daddy passed away this week and these lyrics have taken on a whole new meaning ❤
@AlecWoodworth-qv5qm Really? Nope, not happy. Just miss my Dad and listen to this song that he named me after every night to try and feel close to him after watching his mind and body be eaten away to nothing. I pray you never feel such pain.
My father named me after this song. I was supposed to be an Alexandra but it was a last minute change at the hospital. Feel like his spirt lives on in this song. 💫
My daddy named me after this song. He died at 42 from a massive heart attack and I was nine. I love to know that he heard this song and had to name his baby girl Melissa. Love and light to you ❤️
My older brother brought the Allman's first album home one day and said, "You gotta hear this". I was like 15 in 1969 and I listened. I didn't really know what to think about it. It was very different from Zeppelin, Cream, Doors - the Woodstock era bands that I was into. But it had something and as time passed and more Brothers' albums came out, I sure got wrapped up in it; much deeper than I realized. By 1973, I was ready to leave college and hit the road with the band. But making a career out of playing music wasn't in the cards for me. I had the pleasure of seeing the band many times from 1973 on and through the many different formations of the group. But in the first few years after Duane and Berry were lost, the band still had that soulful groove and sweet-sounding harmonies. And you could feel the sorrow they were enduring with each song they delivered. You have to give them a lot of credit for working through those years. And while many other music styles came and went over the next four decades, the Allman Brothers never swayed, never changed the music, only the band members. Pure Legends.
We were lucky to grow up with such awesome music in history !!!! The 70's were the best years of rock n roll, RIP Dickey Betts!!!! Thanks for giving us the best!!!!!!

REMEMBER DUANE ALLMAN! 49 years ago today, 29 Oct 2020, the world lost a legend, a Brother, a son, a father, a friend...and likely the greatest guitar player to ever walk this Earth. Thank you for everything, Howard Duane Allman. This world is a better place because of you, Brother! I've lived with your middle name my entire life and I couldn't be prouder of that fact. I started learning to play guitar this year solely because I was inspired by YOU, Brother. Thank you for everything! 🙏❤️🎸😥 Rest in Peace, Brother. Thank you!
It was Greg's tribute to Duane after his passing. Duane played bass and sometimes keyboards. There was always a black cat with the band and Dickie Betts, best guitarist in the world 20 years straight.
I'm 70 years old and have heard (or seen) everything from Elvis to Drake. And truth told, I dislike most all of it, always have. ( And no, I'm not some Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby dude, most of that crap sucked, too. ) But over time, a few songs, a dozen or so, truly stand out as special. The right melody, the right moment, the right funk, the right lyrics, the right sentiment, everything just works. This is one of those songs.
This song has always given me goosebumps & teary eyes. It has always held a special place in my heart. Being a lil girl in the 70's, hearing a pretty song with my name it meant the world to me. Thank you @The Allman Brothers Band 💜
This song is just a masterpiece. I've met this woman named Melissa and known her since we were kids (14/yr old). So, we already have a long-standing history together. We have had our ups and downs just like any other friendship/relationship. Times where we stopped talking for a while for whatever the reasons but have always managed to find each other in the dark every time. She knows who she is, and she will always have a large piece of my heart. You'll always be loved, missed, and cherished no matter where life takes us. ♥️
Allman brothers started southern rock at the muscle shoals recording studio ! Live at the Fillmore east double album is the very best in my opinion because of the long version of many hit of theirs and some classic blues ! Dual drum sets also !
This song is one of the only two things in my life that can calm me down and turn my mood around. This song means a lot to me just because of that. No matter what I have going on in life.
It’s 2024 and still can’t ever pass by Melissa without a listen. Must be The Gypsy in me. Love to The Otherside guys. Duane, Gregg, Berry, Butch, & Dickey
I hung out with Greg Allman in 1989 and 1990 in Nashville Tennessee several times. A friend called me at 3:00 a.m. and said they had Gregg Allman at the bar and he was looking for a place to play a video tape on a VCR and a piano to play and I had both. We became really good friends he introduced me to everybody like his sister. I'm the reason he played at the Ace of clubs in Nashville Tennessee back then because I told him there was a rumor who was going to play and he said okay just take me there and I'll play.
Unfortunately for both of us he ended up having a relationship in the early '90s with a woman who threw away all his phone books I think she then committed suicide later. I was glad to find that he found love in the end
This was my dads song to me when I was born n 1983 . My dad passed away on sept 21, 2024. And when I’m missing him this is my go too song . I can still hear him singing it to me . Rip dad
Man, Dickie Betts MUST be inducted into the RRHOF - as a standalone performer / artist / composer. This is as gorgeous a guitar part ever laid down on vinyl - it's both PERFECTLY sympathetic with, AND adding to, the spirit & beauty of this truly beautiful rock ballad. Floors me every time I listen ...
This song reminds me of family, my Dad used to sing my sister’s name instead of Melissa. “Sweet Elisha!!” Brings tears of divine love & joy, thank you Allman Brothers Band!! We love you for the beautiful music you bring to this world!! 💞💎🌟
Yes, I always tell my son I’m the princess of the honey bees. He has yet to ever be stung by one and I’ve taught him to never fear bees, to stay calm and don’t react when they come around. Momma will protect you. Since I’m the princess of them and all 💕☺️
I live in Gulf Breeze, just across the bay from Pensacola. I just read on a FB page that this song was written in 1967 at what was the Evergreen Court Motel here on the west side of town. This FB page had a collection of old pics and a post card of the place. It's still there, now some pretty shabby little apartments. I've past the place a dozen times but didn't know the connection. I will have to ride over there a better look. Was a nice place until the interstate highways took all the traffic away. Like many other towns and cities. The old part just slowly dies.
Thirty years ago this song made me realize what I was looking for in a significant other. Now I have my high school crush after 30 years. Differently timeless.
Absolutely one of the best of my generation. The music had a soul and life of its own that flowed straight from the writers and performers into our hearts. They wrote the most beautiful soundtracks of our lives... and they live on. Love the graphics of this lyric video too! Well done capturing the spirit of the song.
One by one the minstels who kept us spellbound with their tales of joy, lost love and broken hearts, on many long dusty roads or railroads snaking through our lives and theirs, one by one have slipped out of view. Now there's only me & you & sweet Melissa, ever present but still not seen. Except by those who have, like the sands of time, waved goodbye and faded from the screen. 😊❤
My mom and dad Loved his music they bought a CD of and when we went on vacation they would put his CD on repeat and I knew every song by heart and my dad would sang all his song to me and my mom my dad had a beautiful voice
I truly love ❤️ this song ❤️ 🎵, it's truly unique and sounds beautiful 🎉🎉. It takes me back t my youth when I was young just running around wild and free 🎉🎉
One of the most beautiful and poignant love songs ever written. Dickie's guitar is so hauntingly beautiful, and the words couldn't be better. I can feel myself wishing for a "Sweet Melissa" to run home to.
This song has good memories but also haunts me every time I here it. A lost love that broke my heart but I truly wish her the best. I still smile when I hear this song and think about good times.
I had a lost love that died named melissa she had just turned 16 and me 15 she died in a car accident. To this day I wonder when I hear this song what might have been. To this day my mind wanders when I hear this exquisite work. 48 years later no other woman stole my heart as she did. A buxom preacher's daughter to me she was Helen of Troy...
Everytime someone likes this message I will come and listen to this song 💜

Rest in peace Dickey. Thank you for the music and know it will live on.
R.I.P. Dicky Betts........thanks for the music.......................
❤❤❤Dickey Betts & The Allman Brothers Band Forever & Ever❤❤❤
….I once had the love of a Melissa, Allman Brothers had it right, what I wouldn’t do to come back home to Sweet Melissa. ❤️🩹
If Melissa lives FIND HER
Agreed ❤️
My once-in-a-lifetime love was Melissa. Life has tottered along pretty okay, but I shan't ever go a day without thinking of her.
I was named after this song by my daddy who passed away when I was nine. This song means so much to me. Find your Melissa if she’s out there!
"Knowing many, loving none. Barring sorrow, having fun." Indeed indeed.
The older the better, they are like wine. The best band in the world.

Fine wine, aged by the resolution of time, is so sublime.
But, THE BEATLES, tho...
These vintage Catholic Hymns are a treasure and need to be preserved & celebrated. Thanks again.
RIP DICKIE!!! The music lives on forever.. unbelievable accomplishment!! 🎸⚡️🎸⚡️🎸
It’s 2024 and still can’t ever pass by Melissa without a listen. Must be The Gypsy in me. Love to The Otherside guys. Duane, Gregg, Berry, Butch, & Dickey
Many. Miles. Listening. To. This. Young. And. Free. 😁
My beautiful namesake. Pops named me in ‘75❤ The coolest song everrrrr🐝❤️

God Bless Dickey…two drummers, two guitars or more and one helluva group…how time flies but the music stays out…
Hi I’m Melissa. My dad recently passed and always told me I was named after this song. He called me “my sweet Melissa” ❤️💔
Prettiest Rock Song Of Allman Time
Hello Melissa 😊! I just love this song and you're a very lucky woman 💗🌹🙏
Sing with the Angels Dickey, thanks for the music and good time they brought..
Godspeed Dickey
RIP Mr. Dickey Betts...amen
Written when he was 17. Incredible. He was definitely an old soul.
So beautiful.
Could they be the best American band of all time?
Like a Twitter thread. There was two things that he told me one he liked to be called Gregory and two never ask about Cher
SWEET MELISSA ❤ REST IN PEACE❤
thats great really hip
Melissa is my favorite ALLman Brothers Song! 😢
This is the most gorgeous lyric video I’ve ever seen
RIP... Dickie! We lost another great.
Greatest band ever. It just doesn't get any better than this.
Try Allman & Woman....Can't get any worser
Debatable but it's for sure one of the best southern bands fosho. It's like country but you can actually listen to it
This song really encapsulates the spirit of the traveler.
It's such a pleasurable feeling to have the same name as this beautiful and calming song ❤
Rest in peace dicky Greg Duane thanks for the music 🎶
Song will never get old ❤
That was beautiful. The song, the lyrics, the graphics.❤️
Hi, Pearl! We are so agreed concerning the graphics!
Absolutely gorgeous song. So soulful and haunting the way Gregg delivers the lyrics. A true Allman Brothers classic.
I fell in love with Melissa in TN in 1993 and 30 years later I’m still in love ❤❤❤❤with
Gregg's voice, Dickey's guitar, beautiful melodic lyrics and guitar. Sweet Melisa
Melissa ❤️ honey 🐝
Yes, I always tell my son I’m the princess of the honey bees. He has yet to ever be stung by one and I’ve taught him to never fear bees, to stay calm and don’t react when they come around. Momma will protect you. Since I’m the princess of them and all 💕☺️
❤live forever in our hearts and soul;;!!❤❤a thank you for ALL the memories❤
I live in Gulf Breeze, just across the bay from Pensacola. I just read on a FB page that this song was written in 1967 at what was the Evergreen Court Motel here on the west side of town. This FB page had a collection of old pics and a post card of the place. It's still there, now some pretty shabby little apartments. I've past the place a dozen times but didn't know the connection. I will have to ride over there a better look. Was a nice place until the interstate highways took all the traffic away. Like many other towns and cities. The old part just slowly dies.
My favorite Allman Bro. Song .R.I.P.
Thirty years ago this song made me realize what I was looking for in a significant other. Now I have my high school crush after 30 years. Differently timeless.
0:47 always touches the soul
Best lyric video I have ever seen. A lot of love went into that one that is for damn sure.
"Love" ... can there be too much love here in this world ‽‽.
Very true. It's definitely lovely. 😊😊💜
¡Oh Gregg! Tocando el cielo con las manos y el corazón. Gracias, gracias, gracias
This is a beautiful illustration of this hauntingly beautiful song. ❤
Brings back memories of the best time of my life.
Without Melissa, there's nothing.
To me the the final line sounds like “Lord it just ain’t the same”
Perfect❤❤❤❤❤
❤🩹
Well, thank you ☺️
This was sweet. I hope you were able to tell her how you feel or felt darling ❤️
I named my daughter after this song. After seeing them in concert I knew someday if I had a daughter she would be sweet Melissa and she is❤
Homesick for a place that no longer exists....
Hiraeth. ❤
No kidding!
The Past is something somewhere we can only visit in our own private moments and share with words, thoughts and pictures
You and me both. Thank goodness for TH-cam.
Oh yes I hear you there home sick and lonely for family that since passed on miss jamming with them
What a sweet song, 🎶 The movement it stirs
To sweet Melissa... 😻❤
💗.. sweet Melissa ... heart of my heart ...
😭 Tears how beautiful 😇🎼✝️☮️🙌🙏🌞💐
If you don't shed a tear with this song your don't have a soul
Love this... Erie yet beautiful. RIP friend and thank u.
All the questions, they lead to the same answer. Greg's delivery on this one is just perfect!
