It’s been dubbed the most critical election in our history as the governing party’s hold on the electorate continues to slip. It's a make-or-break poll for those in power and those jostling for it as changes to the ballot papers and the introduction of independent candidates come into effect. Voters will need to keep their wits about them as they gear up to make their mark. But what does the future hold for an electorate yearning for change? This Sunday, Carte Blanche examines the politics of promises and power as we build towards the highly anticipated national elections.

Im 27 , about 85 to 90% of everyone I know from high school and now going to professional industries has immigrated within the last 5 years either to AUS , USA, CAD or to the UK . I am in the works to do the same. We refuse to suffer and fix what we did not break .
I cannot see myself safely raising a family here or building my wealth. Its sad because I love south African culture and this country used to be something special, but my generation just simply will not ever trust the politics of ANC ever again . The damage has been done. I have no hope left .

350 political parties is just way too much for a young democracy like South Africa. It points to the failure of the ruling party and main opposition parties.

There should not be more than 5 parties, and the voter vote for the one closest to his/her expectations. All the 300 "parties" only weaken the outcome.

At the national level I'd agree (maybe 8 rather than 5?), but if none of the big 5 address your community's issues, there should be space for local parties to fill the void. A really successful local party will then have a clear path to becoming one of the big 5.

The only party that will be able to save South Africa, is the DA.

I think that when a party is registered there needs to be rules set to ensure parties are doing their manifesto atleast 5 yrs before the actual elections. And start implementing accountability via service KPIs for all Gov related departments I think there would be start to a little change in how things are done.

we polishing the floors on a sinking ship. Any party unable to secure a single seat in e.g. two election cycles should be deregistered. No seats mean your actions and policies affect no one and your party is irrelevant. You should be deregistered and unable to re-register under the same name for e.g. 5 years.

I prefer the German system of governance, but the French have one very interesting procedure they do that I think can really impact our system.
They vote 2 times. The first round is normal, you vote for whoever you want, from that they decide how many seats get allocated to which party, etc. BUT, the second vote is for the ruling party. The top 2 parties are the only options you can vote for then.
That would be an interesting idea to counter the issue we have of a super majority ruling party.

This technique is called muddying the water , it is a tactic used to diffuse opposition impact . If you want change , everyone needs to vote as a block , if you do not you will just have more of the same .
