Basically I don't really know a lot about computers, but the one "hack" I understand, and thus find abnormally fascinating, is dialing a rotary-dial-telephone by disconnecting the line exactly 200ms. It's what the rotary does when rotating back into it's default position, and thus the phone can tell the number you dialed by the number of disconnects. It's called pulse dialing, and you can simulate it with a bit of training. Utterly fascinating, because it's very basic, but a nice example of a creative use of tech - which is what hacking basically is.
Nice funfact
I used to dial a sequence of numbers on a pay phone called a ringback. 660… The pay phone would ring and we would prank our classmates to pick it up.
Thank you for clearing that one out! Strange that it wasn't explained.
Yeah you have the definition wrong lol
Wow that's pretty cool man!
Thanks for sharing👍🏻👍🏻
Criminally underrated channel. Loved the information and production guys, keep up the good work
Thanks for the support!
(They have an antire company backing them, it's insane)
still can't believe how high quality these videos are!
I’m here for the information… But I’m secretly here for the background sets…😍🧡
Really appreciate the efforts put into making this video, the production quality is marvelous.
GOSH! the kinda info given out on this channel for free is............beyond wonderful
Thanks👌
You are always welcome, sir.
Listening to these might not always make 100% sense to me, but it's fun to try to understand lol
Brain training innit
An entertaining canter through hacker history. I was a witness, on both sides of the Atlantic, from inside the profession so I can endorse your selection of highlights. Nice one.
this is pure gold
thank you so much for uploading this🙌
Psyched to see your content again! Great work 🍻
Your production level and writing is top notch
Gracias amigo
Enjoyed this one. had a lot to think about. but i also like the length it wasn't too long. The Background is as artistic as always.
Awesome, thank you!
cool to see and be here. The James Bond of tech might I say
You guys deserve waaaaay more subscribers.
We appreciate the support!
Watching your videos makes me feel like I am actually smart lol

5:20 this picture is as much code that she could find for a picture... (read: many copies of many different versions of the code) for the apollo command module that she worked on. Would love to see a video about her journey from you!
I really enjoy this channel so much.
At 12:30, who else noticed that the black hat made a perfect fit compared to the white?
Bradley. Excellent !
Very great video! A topic that recently got me interested in was life after death in a virtual reality. Don‘t know if it fits your topics but still a very exciting topic.
After you die your brain will be digitized and you continue life in a virtual environment, still talking to your beloved ones.
Interesting thought for a future video. I'll think about a script.
I've watched a documentary on this exact topic. And the author made an interesting note by distinguishing between hackers and cr**kers (I think youtube auto-bans my comment). A hacker is a highly skilled computer hobbyist. Think of Richard Stallman, founder of the FSF, who is a self proclaimed "last MIT hacker", but who (to my knowledge) never "hacked" a single machine in his life. Cr**kers on the other hand are the one who we think of when we say "hacker", people who use their computer skills to compromise software in order to make money.
Excellent video.
A great very high-level overview of the history of hacking. To be clear: "script kiddie" was not a complementary term. :D And the social engineering form of hacking? That far pre-dates toy trains!
Brilliant info
Fantastic, fascinating video thanks for sharing. A potted history of hacking I didn't realise I needed, very eloquently delivered, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for joining us. :)
His last line was gold
I still don't understand why this channel has so ridiculously low sub and views number for such high quality.
Al Gore Rhythm
great video
damn, so much good information
The thumbnail is amazing lmao
Awesome
Neat♡ I did always love trains
John Draper used to show up at Bay area raves in the 90s, everybody called him Cap'n Crunch and I think he always had a ton of E pills
Cool little piece of history here
It is indeed
I wish I had known what i do now a decade ago. My highschool programming teacher was in the industry around this time working for various defenders contractors(she worked on the space telescope spitzer). Id ask her about stuff in class all the time and with all the knowledge I have now I could probably talk to her for hours.
Thank you
You're welcome
I would say Turing was one of the first hackers
I remember script kidding when I was in my pre teens Metasploit just became a thing and I was learning was Linux was lol now I can read code know what it does write some of it as well build a computer and install Linux as my primary OS on my system. Ohh how time flies
bros looking to learn how to hack with code😶.....recieves sumsub notification😎.... find out that we are in no code hacking era 🤣🤣
Phreak is actually a combo of the word phone and freak
And it's the term that is supposed to be used
these videos are too good for youtube lol
I know this is kind of irrelevant to the video, but a few days ago my pc got a trojan on it and now whenever i try to log into stuff on my phone i get a mesagge from a suspicious phone number with a 2FA code. Im wondering how the hacker knows im logging into something on another device than i got hacked on. Also i only get 2FA from weird numbers instead of instagram, facebook, epic games etc.
" telephone hooliganism " 😂😂😂
Is "corn flakes" a British term for "cereal"? Because Corn Flakes and Capt. Crunch are two different things in the US. The whistle came in a box of Capt. Crunch, not Corn Flakes.
In Greece we call all of them "corn flakes" so it's possible
Cornflakes is a generic term for a kind of cereal, I guess.
Most people say "corn flakes" in Europe lol
I seriously love how long these videos are. I love how Sumsub really explain things. Thank you for making good videos.
Our pleasure! Thanks for the support. :)
@@Sumsubcom No problem :)
Very good explanation of the history, however I have one comment, the spelling is 'phreak', short for 'phone freak'
Although, while I get that 'corn flakes' is generic term for breakfast cereals across the pond, this is still a very weird sentence to my North American ears, "Enclosed in a box of Cap'n Crunch corn flakes'
*6:36** I think it rebooted because the app crashed the system*
so if I'm right, hacking is more of beating the system or cracking the code in different situations rather than a movie of a character wearing a black jacket and a anonymous mask using a computer with the color palette of the user interface is just neon green and black.
Why's there a QR code at 0:10 that goes to "77"
That's for you to figure out sonny
is it me or does neal patrick ( 10:40 ) look suspiciously similar to bradley?
1:52 It reminds me more of 4chan than reddit
Then he does that obnoxious Villian hand gesture as if he's a Dr. Evil
How do you know I'm not
@@Sumsubcom wow you're even obnoxious in your replies
Ever heard of it "hacking" the law ( its a funn and legal game )
How can you fail to mention the legendary Kevin Mitnick yet name his treacherous friend Kevin Poulson, Mitnick was at one point the most feared hacker in the world
1:19 WHY AM I SEEING THESE BOYS EVERYWHERE AND I DON'T KNOW WHY?????????????????????????
1:19 I know where that image is from. It's from a video where they talk about if Fortnite is overrated.
Government cybersecurity is not excellent and we are forced to have our sensitive information hosted on government data centers and once it gets breached say hello to being a victim of identity theft.

phreakers was actually a portmanteau of phone, free and hacker(s)
source?
@@Sumsubcom Only real source is I'm old :)
Phrack issue 1 and early 2600 issues were already using the term Phreak and never gave an origin. I've just always thought it came from phone hacker as it fits. The use of ph as a replacement for f pre-dates phat so shortening phone rather that replacing an f seems logical.
History of phone phreaking "more-on-origin-of-phreak.html" page suggests it was spelt with an f originally and adopted the ph in the 1971 esquire magazine article you also reference. So maybe it was just a cleaver play on the term freaks meaning enthusiasts. Noting though that article in Esquire also just starts using the term with no background on it's origin, the history blog is suggesting only this is the earliest use of the ph version they could find.
As noted in that blog as well the reference to use of the term 'phreek' in 1971, lending weight as well that it could be a play on phone and free by some people.
Either way I guess I have no hard source, just what I've always 'known'. Thank you for reminding me to challenge my beliefs, although I'm still no more certain of the origin either way.
One time I hacked a vending machine into giving me a bottle of soda by putting $2 into it

Boatswain pronounced "Bo-sun"
Bradley pronounces it ALL
FYI SaaS is pronounced "sass"
Script kitties
Ummm, it's called "phreaking", not "freaking"
Put your videos on Odysee please.
Phreaking or whatever it was called was such a fake sounding way to hack things, like how on earth is a cereal sweepstakes toy the key to singing in payphones to trick machines a real sentence
…oh, probably should have waited to comment
I think that my phone has been hacked, my battery is draining in a couple of hours all of a sudden ♥
Start with getting the battery replaced.
