  • Bumpass Hell in Lassen Volcanic National Park is a geothermal wonderland. Explore boiling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and vibrant pools in this otherworldly landscape. It's a unique glimpse into the Earth's powerful and dynamic forces.
    Bumpass Hell is one of the most mesmerizing and otherworldly geothermal areas within Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California. Named after Kendall Bumpass, who discovered it in the 1860s and unfortunately lost his leg after falling into a boiling pool, this site is a geothermal marvel that attracts visitors from around the world.
    The landscape of Bumpass Hell is characterized by its bubbling mud pots, hissing steam vents, and brilliant turquoise and green hot springs. The pungent scent of sulfur fills the air as you wander the boardwalks and trails that crisscross the area. It's a sensory experience that immerses you in the raw power of the Earth's geothermal activity.
    One of the most iconic features is the Big Boiler, a massive, churning hot spring that captivates with its vibrant colors and the constant release of steam. Nearby, the boards on the trail are often warm to the touch, a reminder that the geothermal forces are very much alive beneath your feet.
    Bumpass Hell offers a unique opportunity to witness the Earth's inner workings and the geological forces that have shaped the region. It's a destination that marries science and natural beauty, showcasing the dynamic and ever-changing nature of the Earth. Hiking the trails and exploring the geothermal wonders of Bumpass Hell is an experience that leaves a lasting impression and a deeper appreciation for the incredible power of our planet.

    I went there in 1973 I think it was. I walked down with a nice family who were very friendly and the father had been there several times and was a very knowledgeable guide.
    Made the trip much more enjoyable.

    Your videos continue to inspire me. It seems to me you are starting to roam further and further from your southwest beginnings which is a good thing. I truly hope you continue to explore more and more National parks. Looking forward to being out your way again in 2024.

      We did wandered a bit further from home last year. This year is a bit up in the air as to how far we'll venture out but luckily there's still plenty here in the southwest we haven't seen. Definitely no shortage there. 😅 Thanks for your kind words!

    How are the bears out there especially on this trail? Bear spray needed?! That’s the one thing that always deters me from longer hikes…

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I didn’t see any bears at Lassen, but down at Lake Tahoe bears were certainly out and about, as evidenced by our most recent video. I did not carry bear spray on me at Lassen when I hiked. I did have it with me at camp. Only time I’ve really ever carried it has been in Grizzly country, like in the Tetons. That said, it would probably be a better policy for me to have it on my person anywhere I hike since I usually prefer to go it solo.
