While all the characters we're well known with a long history in show business, Betty White (Rose) was considered a national treasure. She starred or co-starred in some of most loved television series in the US. Her last series was called Hot in Cleveland and she was 93 when the series finally ended.

Bea who played Dorothy had previously starred in a successful series as title character Maude, and Rue who plays Blanche was her neighbor in that series. Betty White who plays Rose had also previously starred in the series Mama's Family with Rue. The initial plan was for Betty to play Blanche and Rue to play Rose, but they decided to switch them because Betty had previously played a man hungry Sue Ann Nivens in the Mary Tyler Moore show and Rue's character on Maude tended to be a little ditzy like Rose so they switched up their types for this series and it is hard to imagine it any other way. Estelle who played Dorothy's mother Sophia wasn't really planned as a lead but she worked so well in the part, she became the 4th lead. All of these talented ladies won Emmys for their portrayals during the series run.
What was great about Bea Arthur sometimes she had scenes where all she needed to do was shoot a look and her eyes & face said it all without saying a word! 🤣
They cut the scenes off too soon in some of them. In the ones where Dorothy yells "Condoms, Condoms"....The clerk says to her "Calm down lady, did you just get out of prison?" 🤣🤣

Here's something that will blow your mind: Rue McCalanahan, who played Blanche, was in her 50s! When the show debuted, she was 51. Bea Arthur (Dorthy) and Betty White (Rose) were both 61. Estelle Getty, the actress who played the cranky Sophia, mother to Dorthy, was in real life a year younger than Bea Arthur! There's a phenomenon in sociology where people look younger or older than we perceive them to be. I wish I could think of the name of it. When we look back at people or actors from other times when they were young and try to guess their age, it can be surprising when we find out how old they actually are. Just take any yearbook from someone from, say, my generation (Gen-X) or my mom's generation (boomer) and compare what a 17-year-old then looks like to what a 17-year-old looks like now and it's actually pretty striking to note the visual difference in how we perceive the ages.
More people smoked in the past. Also, our diets are better today with access to fresh produce available year-round. But we do have more processed food now, maybe those preservatives are keeping us looking younger...lol ..
I like the one where they get robbed so Rose gets a gun and almost shoots Blanche. Sophia comes out and says how she's lived 80 years and survived illnesses, etc. and "one night I'll belch and Stable Mabel here'll blow my head off!"
They were a magical group of ladies. They fit together on screen perfectly. It's rare that a show can get laughs throughout generations and The Golden Girls does not disappoint.
As others have said, the show is set in Miami but the women come from all over the USA. Dorothy has a scabrous east coast sense of humour. I have friends like that from New York who remind me of her. It’s very well cast and well written with better put downs than I’ve ever heard in British sitcoms and with none of the soft-edged earnestness from which many US sitcoms suffer. It was extremely popular on both sides of the Atlantic in the late 1980s.
The song was originally written and performed by Andrew Gold, who had a big hit with it in 1978. You can find it on youtube. It’s a much better song than when it was re-recorded and shortened for “The Golden Girls” in 1985. The producers of The Golden Girls felt the song fitted better with a woman singing it, because the show was about the friendship of the four women. I loved Andrew Gold’s version in the 70’s, and when I saw the first episode of The Golden Girls when it premiered in September of 1985 and the theme song started, I was shocked and went “wait a minute....I know this song!”.
“You were a porker!” Nearly choked and got the best ab workout in a long time. Totally caught me off guard! I love comedy when it was allowed to be funny!

Bea Arthur was great friends with Angela Lansbury. At Lansbury's insistence, her character on Murder She Wrote -- Jessica Fletcher aka JB Fletcher -- had the middle name of Beatrice.
Dorothy, Bea Arthur, was in the Marines in WWII. One of her best friends is Blanche, Rue MaCLanahan. All of the Golden Girls were comediennes at heart. Check out Rose's (Betty White) character on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
As funny as outtakes are, this was a series that addressed issues that still aren't openly talked in series today. It's great to enjoy the short-take. And you should. But to get the full picture, you MUST watch each individual episode. If you know the WHOLE series, these jokes are 100% more hilarious.
Based in Miami, Florida. Dorothy and her Mom Sophia from Brooklyn, New York, Blanche some southern state (not sure), Rose (known as the blonde Scandinavian nut job) from Minnesota. It’s fun watching you guys try to figure out who’s who, what’s what. The reason they did so well is that they really pushed the societal standards of the day, great writers, and the perfect cast! Cheers.
It’s a good show. It’s a cross between Waiting for Death’s sarcasm and the situational comedy of Are you being served. Oddly enough, the Golden Girls spin off eventually tried to run a hotel just like Are you being served and it had the same results… nobody watched it.
Best show ever, loved watching these ladies growing up. Still watch reruns. True lose on all their passing. Dorthy always reminded me of my Aunt who is still with us and makes me laugh.
I own all seven seasons on DVD AND the two seasons of The Golden Palace w/Don Cheadle and Cheech Marin. I can probably act out the scenes. Absolute favorite show of all time.
Estelle Getty said the only thing she disliked about playing Sophia was that it took 2 hours for the make-up artist to make her look so much older than she was.
Bea Arthur was awesome she served in the Marine Corps there's a character in the animated film Atlantis that's what I picture when I think of her as a driver
FYI, Bea Arthur playing Dorothy actually did go prematurely gray and white long ago. Estelle Geddes, playing Sophia, her mother, is actually the youngest actress in the bunch. The actress playing Blanche, Rue McClanahan, used to play in a show with Bea Arthur called Maude - that's a pretty interesting show to check out. Bea Arthur plays a feminist in the 70s. Betty White also went prematurely grey & white pretty young, but always wore it well. All of the ladies are playing mid-50s but are actually about 10 years older except Estelle Geddes, she was in her 40s when they started, and she's playing the age of early to mid 80s.
The Golden Girls is still one of the best sitcoms. Three of the ladies were mid-60’s when this first aired and Blanche, was 50. I guess people did look older back then.
The show first aired in 1985, I think. Bea and Betty would have been 63, Estella would have been 62. Making Stan and Rue, the youngest at 52 and 51. You have to factor in that beauty, health, and cosmetics have come a very long way in the last 30 years, plus stage makeup and fashion. There's something to be said about actors and actresses who age gracefully.
The first season of the Golden girls 1985 Rose was 55 Dorothy was 54 Blanche was 53 & Sophia was between 80 and 85 They were 180 half hour shows spanning 1985 through 1992

I'm really enjoying your reactions to Golden Girls. Like to see more in the near future. And they are based in Florida
The golden girl were the top tier of comedy and talent.
The show was set in Miami.
Sadly all four lovely ladies have passed away. They are not replaceable either.
Bea Arthur was great friends with Angela Lansbury. At Lansbury's insistence, her character on Murder She Wrote -- Jessica Fletcher aka JB Fletcher -- had the middle name of Beatrice.
Bea Arthur was a Marine during WWII. She was a truck driver.
Yes!!! Was wondering when you would do the Golden Girls!
Dorothy, Bea Arthur, was in the Marines in WWII. One of her best friends is Blanche, Rue MaCLanahan. All of the Golden Girls were comediennes at heart. Check out Rose's (Betty White) character on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
You’re right. They live in Miami, Dorothy Sophia and Rose all lodge in Blanche’s home.
Miami I was a teen when this was on TV. Great show.
In love ❤ how the British react to such an epic show! Golden Girls was one of the best shows to ever be produced!!
The Golden Girls was really funny. Brits have some great comedy, too. Glad they enjoy some of our stuff.
I so loved the "The Golden Girls" They were wonderful. 🤣❤️❤️❤️
I'd forgotten how funny this show was!
Crazy to think Sophia the "old lady" was younger than Betty White
Especially unusual for America. The closest shows I can think of are Birds of a Feather and Nan.
As funny as outtakes are, this was a series that addressed issues that still aren't openly talked in series today. It's great to enjoy the short-take. And you should. But to get the full picture, you MUST watch each individual episode. If you know the WHOLE series, these jokes are 100% more hilarious.
These aren't outtakes, though... if that's what you meant.
Cheers.
Blanche is from Atlanta
Don't you remember Brighton Belles? Uk show inspired by GGs. Didn't last.
Also, they performed for Queen Elizabeth in 1988
Yep Florida, back in the 80s before Folrida man.
Florida Man was definitely there but he was doing cocaine and wearing sunglasses at night.
8:02 ha ha, "Bull-Duck". Get it? Ha Ha.
I watched that show with my grandmother for years. Great show and great memories.
One of my favorite shows
Bea Arthur was a U.S. Marine during WW2.
Bea Arthur was the star of a sitcom in the 70’s called ‘Maude,” and she had that same ruthless wit that could cut like a machete.
I love the Golden Girls, grew up watching them with my mom
This was great! My husband and I just had to watch it when I came across it. 😂 It's one of our favorite shows.
Bea Arthur also had a show “ Maude “, that aired in the 70’s .😂
Yes it is set in Miami.
You have to see "MAUDE'' it's a TV show with Dorothy and Blanche back in the 70s it's fantastic. I have the complete DVD set.
I own all seven seasons on DVD AND the two seasons of The Golden Palace w/Don Cheadle and Cheech Marin. I can probably act out the scenes. Absolute favorite show of all time.
Yes, they're in Miami. You need to see Rose's St. Olaf stories.
One of the best shows ever made
They came to London and performed on stage for the queen mom. She was a big fan.
Still boggles me and is hilarious to know that Sophia was the actual youngest cast member in real life.
Estelle Getty said the only thing she disliked about playing Sophia was that it took 2 hours for the make-up artist to make her look so much older than she was.
Estelle Getty was born in 1923 and Rue McClanahan was born in 1934.
Rue was younger
Bea Arthur was a truck driver in the Marines during WWII. Hardcore.❤
Holy COW, that man has the cutest laugh! Loves me some Office Bloke Daz! Yeowza!
She was also a U.S. Marine
The Golden Girls is still one of the best sitcoms. Three of the ladies were mid-60’s when this first aired and Blanche, was 50. I guess people did look older back then.
They actually were in their 50s when the series started. I believe Rue M was in her early 50s.
I think they all looked great 4 their age
There were women in their 50s playing women int their 60s.
1:19 the host says they are only supposed to be in their 50's but they look in there 80's. WHAT!!
Oh goody.
I love was so hoping you'd bring back some more Golden Girls. Thanks so much❤👍💯
The first season of the Golden girls 1985
Rose was 55
Dorothy was 54
Blanche was 53 &
Sophia was between 80 and 85
They were 180 half hour shows spanning 1985 through 1992
