Seriously... I, just by absolute chance stumbled across "The Silence" this afternoon. I had never heard of you guys before, nor any of your creations. Its like your music hits a spot that is rarely touched even by music that's attached to memories from the past.

I - much like others who have commented before me below - am in my sixties and I have only recently 'discovered' this amazing band in the last two weeks or so, their beautiful music, their thought provoking lyrics and their videos which take the viewer on a journey through life. This song and its lyrics and video tug and pull so very much on my emotional heart strings. This look back on the lives of the ones that we love so very much turns me into EMOTIONAL JELLO each and every time that I look at and listen to it - which is often. Thank you so very much for writing and recording this song. It is one which will I keep and treasure in my heart until I take my last breath in this life. I am truly and completely emotionally smitten! 🥰

    (Updated) LYRICS:
The lights were low enough, you guessed
You swapped your conscience with your father's medication
    Limped from Rome to Lawrenceville
And on the way wrote out a self-made declaration
And when you got to Pleasant Hill
You forced the traffic to erase your family demons
I made a pact with you and God
If you don't move, I swear to you I'm gonna make you
    Do you need me?
    Do you need me?
    Do you need me?
    Do you need me?
    When the first officer arrived
It happened to be the high school bully of your brother
    When you finally recognized
You felt some guilt that you had even let him touch you
"Can you hear me? What's your name?"
You could not speak, just laid amazed at all the damage
As the high school's letting out
All the kids saying the same thing that they used to
    It's an alien
    It's an alien
    It's an alien
    It's an alien
The lights were low enough, you guessed
Hospital food, there's never enough medication
The doctor asked about your ears
You said your mom said you were made from a revelation
    But revelation never scares
Your fear came from your drunken dad and a pair of scissors
Were you just finally letting go?
Did you mean to take out all those people with you?
    Didn't mean to
    Didn't mean to
    Didn't mean to
    Didn't mean to
    Oh, I didn't mean to
(Take the time to terrify the throne)
    Oh, I didn't mean to
    (You'll never let it go)
    No, I didn't mean to
(Take the time to terrify the throne)
    Oh, I didn't mean to
    (They'll never let you go)
Time is here to take your last amendments
And believe them on your own
Time is here to take you by the hand
    And lead you there alone
Time has come to take the last commandment
And to carve it in your stone
Time has come to take you by the hand
    And leave you here alone

You're a little bit off with these. The proper lyrics are hard-subbed into the video if you turn on closed captioning:

My childhood was full of domestic violence, carried the weight all my life. But recently I been able to go to specific parts with my inner child guiding me, I was able to cut the chains that kept the little me stuck, little me kept showing up till one night I said let’s do this.. heartbreaking and terrifying, I was shaking. Now the wound has been released, it’s in the open and healing. Don’t forget to always use your imagination, it was given to us as a gift when we were little kids for a reason, it’s hard cuz our parents cut our wings. But dig deeper you will find it again. Sending much love to you 🥺♥️

It's obviously wrong of him to say that to your mother, and my heart goes out to her. But just think maybe, maybe he's a broken man. I've gone through this with my parents too, it is absolutely devastating to witness especially as a child and makes you feel so helpless. But now I'm older I realise he needs healing in his heart and soul. I know this might not be helpful except to think that maybe he's not a bad person, but a damaged one 😥💔

The lights were low enough, you guessed
You swapped your conscience with your fathers medication
    Limped from Rome to Lawrenceville
And on the way wrote out a self-made declaration
And when you got to Pleasant Hill
You forced the traffic to erase your family demons
And made a pact with you and God
If you don't move I swear to you I'm gonna make ya
    Do you need me?
    Do you need me?
    Do you need me?
    Do you need me?
    When the first officer arrived
It happened to be the high school bully of your brother
    When you finally recognized
You felt some guilt that you had even let him touch you
Can you hear me? What's your name?
You could not speak just laid amazed at all the damage
And as the high school's letting out
All the kids saying the same thing that they used to
    It's an alien
    It's an alien
    It's an alien
    It's an alien
The lights are low enough, you guessed
Hospital food, there's never enough medication
The doctor asked about your ears
You said your mom said you were made from a revelation
    The revelation never scares
If you came from your drunken dad and a pair of scissors
    You just finally letting go?
Did you mean to take out all those people with you?
    Didn't mean to
    Didn't mean to
    Didn't mean to
    Didn't mean to
Oh I didn't mean to (Oh I didn't take the time to learn to let you go)
Oh I didn't mean to (Never letting go)
No I didn't mean to (Oh I didn't take the time to learn to let you go)
Oh I didn't mean to (Never letting go)
Time is here to take your last amendments and believe them on your own
Time is here to take you by the hand and leave you there alone
Time has come to take the last commandment and to carve it into stone
Time has come to take you by the hand and leave you here alone

I really and sincerely believe that - in my very own humble opinion - this is perhaps one of the most emotionally touching 'look back' and nostalgic songs ever written, performed and enhanced by its accompanying video. It is like looking in on our very own early childhood years as they unfold right before our very eyes - while the memory driven tears come streaming down our cheeks. We were too young to comprehend much of what was happening in our young and naive lives back then. And to this very day, many of the unanswered and perhaps unanswerable questions still begin and end with the word 'Why?'. And sadly we may never know the answers because life and human behavior are like mysterious riddles all wrapped up and concealed in and by enigmas. 😞 😔 😟

This song is so addicting. I haven't been able to resist listening to it at least twice a day, since I first heard it back in July of last year. I'm new to this band, and although I've listened to and liked their previous albums, A Black Mile To The Surface is such an amazing album, with songs that beg to be played, again and again. It's such a departure from their earlier albums (I mean that in the nicest and respectful way possible), and I hope their next album sounds similar to this. This album + I Know How To Speak...easily in my top five most loved albums of all time. I'm 42, and I have listened to a LOT of music, but there is something so extraordinary about this album, Andy Hull's voice, and the entire band as a whole.

Your music is so emotional and Andy's voice is so powerful and Robert, Prince and Tim are KILLING IT, I wonder if you guys will ever do a purely instrumental album??? Your delivery with each lyric. strum of a chord or beat of a drum is so heartbreaking and amazing in this song (and many of MO's other songs) , I honestly cannot get enough of you guys. Also shout out to the director! Mike's eye for storytelling in each of his videos is so inspiring. Please keep up all the astounding work you guys are doing. Every time that I am 'brave' enough to select this song to listen to - which is quite often - the tears just come streaming down my cheeks. I am in my mid-sixties and the memories and emotions that this song and video evoke within me are just so strong and heartfelt because of the way that events spanning my entire lifetime have unfolded. The band's performance of this song and the touching manner in which the vocals are presented just wash over me like a Tidal Wave of Emotions. This song 'Alien', another one 'I know How To Speak' and 'The Silence' all represent three lovely and amazing performances that I have only relatively recently come to know in the world of music. And I came to know of this band Manchester Orchestra because someone mentioned them in the comments section of another song by someone else I had listened to. You guys are THE ABSOLUTE BEST! Thank You so very much for being out there. You are truly amazing!
