On toms and kick 421 old; on snare 421 new without any doubt.

Thanks! On Tom and Snare I like the old one better on BD it is the newer for me. Liebe Grüsse Benno

unlike many people I find that IF Microphones change over time it's for the worse
And the differences I can hear between the two microphones would make me choose the older one every time
      (especially for the Snare)
I honestly think I could make the older one, here, sound like the newer one with processing BUT that would be more difficult to do the other way round
      YMMV

@@BeesWaxMinder Well the older one is selected out of plus/minus 50 MD421. I find the differences between this mics is particularly drastic. So it is some what an unfair comparison. Liebe Grüsse Benno

Now… in a world where speakers need to get played in, before they mature sonically… might it be the same with microphones?
I have discussed this with someone who knows many magical recording tricks n such. His response to my idea was: “maybe so.” (To paraphrase.)
Just thought I’d send you that thought.
    Take care,
    Chuk

That is a valid point. The MD421II is second hand so I hope it is played in. Liebe Grüsse Benno

Hi Benno, there's a new MD421 kompact that has just been released. That would be awsome if you could do the same comparision with it. Cheers. Lud.

is the old one a 421-II still?

    • @bennokaiser698
      @bennokaiser698  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

No, the old one is the version with the original capsule design, the new 421-II was redesigned for easier production. Liebe Grüsse Benno

@@bennokaiser698 Oh right. I was just curious because I know the II’s are quite old now. I think my buddy has one that’s at least 15-20 years old at least.
      That said, was it a U5, or a U4 then I’m guessing?

    • @jamescassidy4045

@@bennokaiser698 Anyway, I def prefer the older one, and I also have an older U5 that I def like more than the three 421-II's I have here right now, but it also depends, because on guitar I sometimes prefer one, or the other, and I still do like the II a lot of the time, but it can be a little thin/weird in the midrange sometimes. I definitely want to get one more older one.
Also, I slightly prefer my buddy's old 421-II that I'm borrowing vs my newer II's, it's got a little more body in the midrange, and actually sounds almost somewhere in the middle of my U5, and my other 421-II's.
The other thing is, like we were talking about a while ago, is that 421's for some reason seem to be one of those mics that can really vary from mic to mic, even of the same model. Like obv, no two mics, just like speakers, will be exactly the same, but 421's especially seem to really vary.
One thing I do like though, is I managed to get two new 421-II's during covid when Sennheiser was selling them for like $150 USD brand new, and they are very close in serial/batch, only a couple numbers off, and they sound almost identical which is kind of nice for some things. My buddy, and I always say, we should have bought a couple more at that price.
