I once overshot my station by two more, and had to walk an hour short to get back to my hotel because the train I was riding was the last one of the day and there was no train running the opposite direction. Good thing that Japan is a safe place or I would probably get robbed.
The Shinkansen/Bullet train bit is actually important since if you overslept for a little bit, the possibility that you miss your station and ended up in different prefecture is very high since Shinkansen stations are spaced relatively far away to each other (otherwise it will stop too much thus not really fast anymore). Also not all Shinkansen are the same, some make less stop, thus you might ended up quite far from your intended station if you overslept. Most prefecture only have 1 Shinkansen station.
The last time I fell asleep on public transportation, I had just finished going to a convention(the entire weekend) and we went to get donuts afterwards. I was so tired I ended up passing out on the bus and leaning on the guy next to me. He didn't wake me up but I was so embarrassed about it later
