Hey man, I'm not Banjo Ben, but maybe I can answer your question. Crosspicking is flatpicking because you use the same techniques. Crosspicking just means you are imitating banjo-style rolls with the flatpick technique. Crosspicking usually means that the playing pattern skips between strings quickly in a banjo-roll fashion.

I've also played many styles for many years. I was also wondering the difference in alternate picking and cross picking, since some tutorials will show for a forward roll picking down down up, and for a backward one up up down. Of course those are based on groups of three while yours (Banjo Ben) fall more into four. Is there any time where you will pick a couple of strings in the same direction with your approach to crosspicking? I'm interested in anybody's input here...

Hey buddy, great question. I typically keep mine completely alternating even with 3-note rolls, but there are those who don't, of course (like my sister). EVERY once in a while I'll do a double-down or double-up, but not when playing fast. I just created an Intro to Crosspicking lesson...check it out: th-cam.com/video/4lwmIP4mV-0/w-d-xo.html

Watch this video of the Great Norman Blake at 2:00: he explains the double down forward roll and the more common alternate. If Norman Blake does it, it can't be wrong.
