My sister and I used to watch stuff like this on the old t.v. show Solid Gold, we were young, preteens, both dancers, in dance school at least at the time. She wanted to be a Solid Gold dancer, I said " you can't dummy, you're four feet tall and clumsy !" She shot up to 5'9", was choreographer for an NFL cheerleading squad, made some music videos with stars of the times, was a backup dancer for two major female singers, guest dancer on shows like Soul Train..... I swear , ANYthing to prove me wrong !!
You don't call a song "Boogie Oogie Oogie" unless you can absolutely bring the funk, and I think Taste of Honey did more than enough to earn their reputation. Great stuff.

Janice Marie Johnson is the bass player. She is 70 now and has aged like a fine wine. Check her 2003 Musicians Institute concert, where she was 49. Lots of stuff on her on TH-cam. A two part interview she did on Funk N' Stuff is really a great back story.
I showed this video to my youngest son (a total metalhead). His first comment was about the bassist not using a pick. He thought that was amazing. I remember when this song came out. I love this band. They are amazing musicians.

Actually it was Janice Marie Johnson who said that to the crowd. She recorded that show a and when she listened back to it she started working out some stuff. She called the keyboard player Perry Kibble to her room, and they wrote the song. Janice and Perry. Won a Grammy for their songwriting on Boogie. Sorry just had to set the record straight per Janice Marie Johnson.
Didn’t expect this one! There was so much great stuff on TV back then, with The Midnight Special and Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert. We didn’t know how good we had it.
Complete total jam. Been telling you all the 70's is where it's at. The diversity of kick-ass tunes was relentless. I was 18 yrs old when Taste of Honey released this classic. Keep it up gentlemen.
Most disco-era entertainers were just singers. Of course, there are always exceptions, and it seems the best of the best (ABBA, Bee Gees, K.C. and the Sunshine Band) were also songwriters and musicians. A lot of promo videos from the 70's and earlier were live images synched with audio of the official studio version. This is one of my favorite performances and easily a top five bassline for me.

Just getting started but this is the music of when I was in high school. I was more of a Lynyrd Skynyrd and hard rock guy and stuff but this whole part of the scene was wonderful to me. And this is just the tip of the iceberg about how cool that was. You really have to check out bands like Cameo especially when they were like a 10-piece band before they condensed down to three piece band in the Ohio Players add LTD living in the material world and just all these things going on. That was so fun underground. I'm so lucky I got exposed to that at that age

Beat me to it.. dropped down to comment the same damn thing! 😂 I immediately think of the Isleys every time I hear this tune.. and that always reminds me of Hendrix cause he was playing with them, and even lived with the family right before he was discovered and invited to the UK. I love that fuzzed out guitar tone.. if I had to guess it was a early Vox amp with fuzz box, but then also sounds like there’s extra compression of the tone, with a wah, or flanger or phase shifter giving it that oscillating wave sound.. but I dunno, it’s just a great sound for solo leads. The earliest similar guitar sound I can think of would be Davie Allen and The Arrows “Cycle-delic” from one of the biker movie soundtracks they did in the 60’s.
It ain't right to be that attractive and play that way! I've loved this one since it was on the charts. If you want to catch the big new wave of female talent, head to Japan, Korea, and Indonesia, for all-female groups like LOVEBITES, Band-Maid, Rolling Quartz, and Voice of Baceprot. Superb talent in every one!
I hope this performance is in the national archive, because damn. Never saw this exact video, but they are my go to example of "way ahead of the time". I've seen interviews with the ladies, they are amazing. Janice Johnson should be at the top of anyone's best bass player list. They tell a great story about this one, look for that!

At least on THAT record. Alan Parsons himself started out as a sound engineer. He literally mixed The Beatles and Pink Floyd before getting his own band together. He also accidentally wrote and recorded the Michael Jordan/Chicago Bulls intro song: SIRIUS/EYE IN THE SKY. Check him out.
