Plug-In Hybrids and the Case for Geofencing

  • Geofencing technology enables plug-in hybrids to automatically switch between driving modes - for example, between hybrid mode and full electric.
This could have big benefits for urban areas where low-emission zones are becoming more common. Geofencing would mean plug-in hybrids would automatically switch to full electric mode while in these areas, helping to reduce vehicle emissions.
What is geofencing? Watch the video where we explain what geofencing is, how it works, and the case for geofencing technology in plug-in hybrids.
There is some debate over the positive impact, or otherwise, of plug-in hybrids. Some people think plug-in hybrids are a flexible option that encourage drivers to start making the switch to full electric, while others think they unnecessarily extend the life of the combustion engine.
Either way, plug-in hybrids are here to stay for the foreseeable future, so we explore the benefits of geofencing and explain what it is exactly.

IMHO i think the PHEV is just a waste of time and money. Most of them are bought to get the lower tax and then never ever charged up and used as an EV.
Pointless. I will stick with my BEV. I do appreciate that BEV is not for everyone right now, but if you buy a PHEV at least charge it and use the EV side of the technology.

To get the most out of PHEVs, the EV part definitely needs to be used. Particularly with some of the larger ones, which can be less efficient than the petrol/diesel only versions if the battery is not used properly on the plug-in hybrid. We think PHEVs are ideal for commercial operations where there is genuine mixed-use driving, i.e. lots of longer trips with trips into urban areas mixed in.
Case of useful tech, but not always used properly.
