    I'm saving lots of black walnut seeds this fall for eating and for planting an orchard next spring, so please keep the black walnut videos coming! Thank you I really enjoy all of your videos.

    I harvested black walnuts this year for the first time, they are delicious! Thanks for the video!

    We have a black walnut tree in my yard in town… we are in Michigan. I gathered some few years ago and they dried well in our basement! This year our tree dropped so many! I never seen so many since 2011 when we bought the house… we gathered a ton and there are so many left out there yet! I take the husk by hand after they sit and get slightly gooey and then water with a drill and paddle to clean the black off! This is exciting! Great video!

    Hickory nuts are great too, but black walnuts takes a bit of time but the reward is worth it. Need to hire some squirrels to help you with the process, they go crazy over these nuts.

      Right on! I’ll be visiting the Asheville nuttery sometime soon hopefully. I’d like to work towards something similar here in the Piedmont

    I wish I had some for planting. There are some black walnut trees on a state campground 40 miles from me. Thinking about driving there to see if there are any to be had every fall when they drop. I see that they are expensive to purchase the seeds online.

      Yeah I’d say very strong chance there will be seeds there for you to collect. Roughly where at in the country are you? Are black walnut common in your area? I’m working to find ways to make my seed less expensive. Black walnut seed are a lot of work to process and then heavy to ship. But they’re so easy to do for yourself if you can find local trees. Glad to hear you’re interested in working with them!

      @@livingsoiltreefarm I'm upstate NY on the canadian / vermont borders. Most of the black walnut trees are west of me at least 40 to 45 minute drive from my online research.

    Do you have a link for that mechanical nut cracker?

      I think there is a new thing on TH-cam where you can't post links in comments, I will try below and see what happens. But if you search black walnut cracker online you will find it. I got mine through Roots and Harvest, they have a webstore, but amazon and other vendors sell this one.

    Are there any look alike nuts?

    • @livingsoiltreefarm
      @livingsoiltreefarm  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Butternut is similar looking, also edible. It’s more oval shaped. There are other walnut species like English and Japanese walnuts similar looking and also edible. This is by no means a comprehensive list but those are the most similar looking ones I can think of. Buckeye are toxic and could maybe look similar in the husk but once you get the husk off the nuts look very different.

    Seems a good cement mixer would do the job better.

      I don’t really think there’s a better or worse option it’s just what works for different people in different situations. A cement mixer will be slower but potentially less work. But then you have to own or rent a cement mixer
