    one leaf drop phenology to note: pure butternuts (Juglans cinerea) usually lose their leaves well in advance of the first frost, but butternut hybrids (generally butternut x japanese walnut, J. ailantifolia) hold onto their leaves until the first frost.

Instead of storing my walnuts ( I have four 5 gal pails full) in buckets with a soil mixture, could I plant them in my air prune beds and keep them in there over the winter? @@wendyleslie6461 absolutely ! Spot on about the bees. I generally find seeds more forgiving than transplants. Yeah it’s strange if you live in a place where black locust are abundant to imagine people wanting to pay for seeds/trees. But people (myself included obviously) love them and need ways to grow them where they aren’t abundant. I now live in a place covered in locust but I grew up where they were not common at all. I picked up so many I don't know what to do to hold them during stratification. I've landed on gallon ziplock bags. Some with peat moss and some just nuts after floating. I don't know... will the ones without soil/peat end up molding? After all the work I've done, I'd like to at least get them to spring so I can put them in some air pruning beds and see how they do. I'd love videos going over dealing with the 'mass nut numbers'.

    • @cedarmyers6709
      @cedarmyers6709 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This year is my first try. From what I've read moist peat in ziplock bags should do fine (but not dripping wet). The bags are thin enough to still allow gas exchange. Do check on them a few times through the winter and discard any problematic ones. Don't let them dry out; add a little water if needed. Also, get the PDF of the Forest Service Woody Plant Seed Manual. It has over one thousand pages covering seed collection, handling, storing and germination for 236 genera of trees. There are lots of other good references but this is the one I keep coming back to.

    • @livingsoiltreefarm
      @livingsoiltreefarm 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Dadnatron this time of year can quickly become overwhelming! I can definitely make a video soon going over some of my nut storage stuff. I will sometimes use ziplocks in the fridge and I’m leaning towards no medium in the bag when I do that. Without medium in the bag it’s easier to keep an eye out for mold. If you see mold early on it’s easy to rub it off and the seeds are not harmed. I’m finding the golden rule in ziplocks is you do not want to see drops of water. I little bit of condensation is okay but if there’s big drops that’s a sign things are way too wet. It took me a long time to learn that one. I had so many mold issues in the fridge previously. Using peat most or sand or any other medium is totally fine too. It’s probably better for the micro biome of the seed to have some sort of medium in there. All that said I find the easiest thing for me is to store nut seed in buckets out side. I have shown this in some videos recently I can try to tag you or something. I never seem to have mold issues outside, just have to keep them safe from squirrels!

    Hey, just found a local bitternut hickory at a park. It's good to know the nuts are still usable for oil, but maybe not with high heat. I saw suggestions for storing the oil in really cold spots, too: fridge/ freezer. Maybe making a basic vinaigrette with it, but using that on more than salads, like to dress savory or sweet stuff could work. Spruce tip vinegar or syrup might blend well, too.

    • @livingsoiltreefarm

      @@lizhyink5636 nice !! I have used the oil to cook and it worked well but I haven’t played with it a lot yet. So far the only high heat thing I’ve tried is to cook up zucchini in a pan with the hickory oil. Folks say the smoke point is similar to olive oil. My favorite thing is to eat it with sourdough bread and salt. The flavor is really present and strong that way. I bet it would be great in dressings! I should try that. Acorn and walnut oils on the other hand are not good for high heat uses from what I have read. My friend Justin says he keeps his at room temp but to make it last really long and preserve flavor the fridge or freezer is best. I keep mine in the fridge

    I found a place last year that had these "American plums" but i didn't know what they were because they were the size of cherries and tall like trees, almost the same size as a cherry tree so i was confused because we always had sand plum thickets that had bigger plums on smaller wooded plants. Anyway, i returned this year to check and only found 5 on the ground. I figured I was late since its the last of September but the ones i found were nice and firm and red. None left on the tree. Im not sure why there wasnt more because they were EVERYWHERE the year before. Im keeping the seed because i would really like some of these on my property because they are very neat "trees" they have a flakey bark that curls. My question is, should i plant them now?! I thought you should keep them cool till spring but i definitely dont want them locked in a dormancy. I wish i would've picked them last year, kinda bummed there were basically none this year..

      @@KnightOfRandom they can sometimes have big years followed by small years in terms of plum production so that may be what’s going on. I think you are always better off planting plum seed as soon as you eat the fruit. Doesn’t mean you’re doomed if you keep the seed in the fridge. But my preference and advice would definitely be to plant them outdoors now. Keep me posted ! They are cool trees!

      @livingsoiltreefarm OK thanks! And nearby there were small trees that were loaded in these red berries that for the life of me cannot find a match for online. They're not honeysuckle berries. But they look like Buffalo berries but the leaves are different, smooth edge alternating leaves and clusters of red berries with medium length stems.
