- This is a collection of advice for new students going to University/College. I've spent a year here so feel like I have a small amount of wisdom to impart...
I study at the University of Pretoria so advice is skewed towards people coming here but there's still lots of practical stuff you can use no matter where you're studying - if you're even studying at all.
Advice: (in order)
1.) Noise-cancelling headphones
2.) Talk to older students in your degree
3.) Download the campus map onto your phone
4.) Exercise
5.) Make friends early
6.) Eat healthily
7.) Set up a good calendar/timetable
8.) Start working early
9.) Do the study guide/tutorial problems
10.) Joll/schedule fun
11.) Don’t fall behind
12.) Do have deep conversations
13.) Invest in a good pair of slip slops
14.) Master the turnstiles
15.) Participate in varied events
16.) Persevere

This video is making me nostalgic lol I had the time of my life at TUKS. I got my Honours in 2018 and I'm in France now, doing my Masters, but I can frankly say my years at Tuks were the best of my life.
Constantly gotta remind myself what a special time it is...
@@mitch7w That's great! It's often in our nature as human beings to take things for granted and then regret it when we lose what we had. So I believe reminding yourself of how special something is, is the way to go.

Well said Mitch, you packed a lot of great ideas into a bite size video that I'm sure will help future generations of prospective Tuks students. The only thing I might add is to read and try to understand the material in your textbook that relates to each lecture before going to that lecture. You'll be amazed at how much more you'll learn from the instructor by having some knowledge of what he's going to explain in class. (Pete)

GET A MENTOR...That's another thing...off campus students have the STARS mentorship program and res students have both the res and STARS program available to them...use these programs guys...but great video really wish someone told me this 3 years ago

Don't forget to make use of all the support structures offered to you by the university - take care of your mental health.
Also, goals are reached by making the right decisions day in, day out. Don't cut yourself short because of because of temporary pleasures that won't benefit you in the long term.

@@mitch7w it's been a long time since I set foot in SA. originally from Gabon, I was granted a scholarship to study in SA and chose Tuks as my Alma mater, it is a great university with a great ranking nationwide and worldwide. unfortunately back in my days, TH-cam wasn't a big thing and now seeing your videos makes me reminisce all the time I spent at UP/Tuks. now married with 3 kids and living in France, I can only show my 17-year old girl what my university look like compared to what she's about to get into here in France. and again, I thank you for the work you're putting in to show the world what Tuks really is about. Your videos are more helpful than the others who only recorded what they’ve eaten and shit like that. I’m not saying that’s bad but yours are more educational and it gave me more ideas on how it is in that university.

Was healthy 1st 2 years, then from 3rd year onwards after stopping with rugby and soccer, It went south... By that I mean I developed a gut xD

I wasn't aware that if you live in res you still have to cook for yourself
Every res is different. TuksVillage is self-catering. Some reses have cafeterias.

What are your tips for choosing modules?
Was also wondering Jess, I need to do the online registration now
We don't pick modules in engineering - they're all assigned. But if you do have choices I'd say take a mix of easy and hard ones to give yourself some breathing room and also pick a diverse mix of more technical subjects like physics/maths along with more general learning subjects like psychology and criminology. Obviously they need to be in the realm of your degree and what you're interested and passionate about learning more about!

@@mitch7w well i have about 12 core modules and if i enroll in all of them it sais that i've reached the maximum points (196) and i have 200. So how many points should i have? Should i enroll with the minimum or max points that i can get?
