Tell you what: $24 million in the bank and a beautiful house in Ojai of all places with a woman I love….? Not much to question there. Anyone in his position would probably do the exact same thing.
I think he's an amazing guitarist and songwriter, from what you rarely see of him he's grown from his time in GnR and i personally wish him the best even if we dont get to hear and see him as a musician
1. Becoming sober while the rest of the band, particularly Slash and Duff McKagan, were still drinking heavily and doing drugs. Izzy originally made a living in LA as a drug dealer himself, but his infamous arrest for urinating in an airplane trash can and subsequent probation made him get clean. Drugs had already led to Steven Adler's firing, and sobriety made Izzy see how self-destructive GNR was. 2. The UYI tour being marred by riots, late starts/early exits, and general excess (typical of a big rock band but exacerbated by Axl's behavior). Playing music night after night not only became a chore but even increasingly dangerous. You can hear Izzy's involvement and influence in the band's music slowly diminish until by UYI he was absent from music videos and his guitar was often buried in the mix. 3. The final straw, from what I read long ago (can't remember where) was that Axl tried to put Izzy on salary, which Izzy likely considered a slap in the face from his bandmate, co-writer, and childhood friend. If true, this explains why Izzy was so adamant about "splitting the loot" evenly for the reunion tour, as petty as some may consider it to be. * Considering the craziness of the GNR years it makes sense that a more lowkey person like Izzy would rather have an easy life traveling, riding dirt bikes, and doing what he wanted than return to that lifestyle again. I think he knew that, having been in one of the biggest rock bands in history, he would have to actively keep away from the industry when it came knocking on his door.
Izzy’s a Legendary Writer, 1st & Foremost. there were 3 guitarists in Gn’R (Duff wrote many 6-string licks for the record) & that’s why ‘Appetite’ is the Greatest Hard or Heavy Rock Guitar Album of All Time…I use “or” so there’s a spot for an AC/DC album. I bet Izzy’s doing exactly what he wants to do these days & owes us nothing. hopefully, he’s financially able to be comfortable doing what he’s doing & Especially, what he’s Not or No Longer Doing. let him be. he’ll come around if/whenever he’s ready to do so.
This video it's very informative, I got your point, he deserve more for what he created and would be amazing to see him playing again with any other band. May some musicians give up of the highlights of big shows and media, I guess he carry deep sorrow from GNR crisis and don't to deal with that thing anymore, or maybe it's something else. People eventually will change, no matter what you got on your account, hobbies, careers, whatever.. Once you done with something it's hard to come back. I wish he's doing well and enjoying his life, despite the fact the doesn't play anymore, he's a legend. Everybody should listen to the heart and try something new over our path in this life.
I lived in LA during 2019. I had a friend who was the biggest gnr fan, and told me Izzy was giving music lessons to a friend of my friend... Don't know if that's true, but that's the last thing I've heard about my hero and favorite musician every, Izzy Stradlin
To be fair though, I don’t think they’ve written many new songs since the reunion. I think the new songs coming out are leftover from other stuff. But yeah, Izzy’s songwriting contributions are highly underrated.
Having lived in Lafayette, Indiana in my teen years, and being only slightly younger than William Rose and Jeff Isbell, I can attest that Lafayette is probably the biggest drug town in the state of Indiana. That gives us a good idea for where the two got started in their addictions. That said, there are many who have stepped away from popular music while still having immense talent. Steve Perry comes to mind, for one.
Sad…. Glad Izzy and Axl were able to rise above. Funny, you mentioned Steve Perry and j literally just interviewed the Journey drummer. Thanks for watching! 🙏
There is a difference between music and show business. He may very well be in his garage making music, just like someone may do wood working. This in entirely different than going on the road with a corporation to play a circus event.
It's not Izzy's job to release music so the public can be happy. Izzy was and always will be the best songwriter in GnR. He's given the world plenty of amazing music. I'm sure Izzy gets a massive royalty check every month. All I'd want to see Izzy do is a long form interview. I know it'll never happen just like a GnR reunion won't happen. Let the man enjoy his life.

Since he got sober before he had a chance to spend all his money he doesn’t ever have to work again. Ojai is beautiful. If I had the chance to just live a comfortable life there without having to go out on the road for 100-300 nights a year I’d take option A
