    I love how public you are with your bidding price, it's actually pretty smart. I've seen people get anxious that they'll never find an item again that is way less scarce than batman 181.

      It’s the emotional attachment and a fear of missing out that makes people overpay for things that they really shouldn’t. I have been guilty of this in the past and made stupid mistakes with buying.

    Excellent analysis as usual and super cool to get your views on an actual book vs a hypothetical book. Obviously beggars can’t be choosers for that issue in 9.2, but that particular copy appears to be slightly misaligned at the spine. We all know that not all 9.2's aren't created equally, so it would be interesting to know if the overall eye appeal factored into your ceiling bid price. Thanks again for doing what you do!

    I bought a raw Batman #181 in 2009 for $110 in very, very good condition; perhaps 6.0 or 6.5, at a summer sale in Dekalb, Ill.. The plastic bag still has the price tag on it. I wanted it because in 1967 I was 5 years old & my mom bought me a Batman costume for Halloween. It was a totally emotional purchase. It was a great price & I just want to pass it down to my son. If he decides to sell it after I die he'll be selling at the cost basis at the time that he inherits it. A win all the way around!

    You are correct, there’s no rush to get these books. Take your your time and seek out the best deal and don’t over pay. There’s definitely better ways to invest your money.

    Keep up the wise advice Sean

    Thank you for a great video. Very cool. I am always hunting for the right items but have to use a broad strategy and not focus on only auctions to get it at the right price. The upside is that while everyone is mesmerized at Heritage, I will close a deal somewhere else.

    Shawn. Update on this? Comics have seemed to stabilize more. Gone down about 10% more as an index.
    Seems like there’s buyers coming back in and it’s reached a “bottom”. At least for vintage comics?

      Makes me happy to read your comment. Shawn is changing lives. A voice of reason amongst chaos is so helpful, but people have to listen and put it to action. I’m still selling and investing also. No one says you have to sell it all but being financially established is a must, which I’m not but working on.

    As a collector I always analyze what I'm pursuing as an investor, and figure out how much higher I'm willing to go than said investors, because they effectively set the floor in some of the markets I'm in. With markets (mostly) tanking now it's been a great time to finish up some of my collections, but I'm down to the stuff that really isn't scarce. Keep up the good work.

    I think alot of people haven't woken up to the 5%ish easy return in cash due to interest rates climbing so quickly. Many are still in the speculation mode of recent years where cash was trash. In a way we have to relearn that there are once again low/no risk competitive options for our money and measure these investments against them.

  • @MetalBum

    Scarcity is different than demand. There’s much more demand for marvel comic books. Declining demand for DC

    I'm also an analytical personality type, everything I see relates to numbers- odds of probability, risk/reward calibration, and I don't believe in coincidence....
    In the early 80s I worked the comic scene- back then deacidification and stainless staples were being pitched for golden age books.
    Curious as to how those books grade these days- do these comic slabs come with Details- Cleaned, like coins?
    My first thought on the auction was $8,500 but once you have grey hair patience becomes prudent.
    Thanks for sharing with your channel!

    4:15 - The only problem with that logic is when you're dealing with stuff that's truly scarce. You can't apply that logic when it comes to a 9.0 Action Comic #1, because an item like that only comes up for auction once in a blue moon.

  • @carlosrey9914
    @carlosrey9914 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video as always. If the opportunity cost for any collectible or antique is investing in an index fund, when has a collectible or antique ever outperformed an index fund?

    • @ReservedInvestments
      @ReservedInvestments  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It generally only occurs in two scenarios: Scenario one: The top 1%-5% of the market when a collecting category starts gaining heat. Those items tend to increase in value very quickly and exponentially. Scenario two: If a collecting market becomes very hot, and you were a collector before that holding period, and you see into the hype, you can do very well. Aside from those two scenarios, it is next to impossible to regularly beat the stock market in collectibles without becoming a major dealer and spending a lot of time on it.

    • @carlosrey9914
      @carlosrey9914 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Reserved Investments Interesting. So the best bet long term would be to invest 15% of your income into a low fee index fund and use diposble income to buy into a market or hobby where emotions can overcome the buyer. Unfortunately for comics, I think greatest increase in value occurred after the introduction of third party grading. We won't see that level of increase in comics again.

    Do you take into consideration in considering populations of graded comic books, the recency of the number of books added to a population. Ex. Isn't it important if say of the 52 pop of the 181 that many were graded in the last year or two? How much do you consider how many might be sitting ungraded just being held out until prices go back up?

    12:01 I am certain that you can get it for 7,000 USD if you would put an ad online. Because no comic book is rare (e.g., #300 spiderman) I am certain that there is someone out there in financial need willing to sell at a much lower price.
    You cannot bargain with stocks or gold. A better asset class.

    • @MetalBum
      @MetalBum ปีที่แล้ว

      No one will see this ad you’re talking abt. There’s hundreds who would come in and bid it up over the $7k and by the way it sold for $15k 😮😮

    In regards to the time value of money, if I was to buy a $10,000 comic book that I planned to hold 10-20 years. Does it come down to scarcity and rarity plus potential future demand to buy a book at that price? Great content as usual!

    • @ReservedInvestments
      @ReservedInvestments  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Partially, BUT you have to look at opportunity cost as well. $10,000 in an investment account is going to grow to potentially a lot more than a comic book that is in a speculative market at present time...

      @@BlxckAshK 10 years is generally thought of as a period of time to double your money in index funds so $10k in 10 years is $20k, another 10 years is $40k. Is todays $10k comic a $40k comic in 2043? Who knows but its an interesting benchmark to think about.
