Thanks for sharing this campsite and area. As I said in the other comment, we are working on planning a trip through Montana next summer ,and using the atlas , found the Bighorn Canyon area Interesting. Thanks for sharing this city campsite. We are putting it on our list. 😀~Wilson and Kelli
Funny that you say that, for I've just spent this evening exploring some of the history on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. Happy and free, though, may be a stretch as many (especially the Sioux) spent centuries stealing other tribes' land, capturing/kidnapping and enslaving members of other tribes, etc. That's why the Crow fought alongside Custer's men at Little Bighorn.
Another great travelogue video of some locations that are a bit off the beaten path, especially the Little Big Horn National Monument and Bridger. You do a wonderful job describing the history of the locations you visit. Keep it up! I first saw the Little Big Horn battlefield in 1969 and only much later did I fully come to understand the Native American experience from their point of view. Have to admit many of the places you feature are places I've tended to blow through on the way to somewhere else. I got to learn to slow down and take in the history more. Thanks for reminding me of that! Edit: Why isn't the Travel Channel people calling you!? And bring on the Bear Tooth!
Another awesome historical video. Thank you. We stopped at Little Big Horn in 2003 on our way to AK while I was active duty AF, but we got there near closing and only saw the field from the parking lot. So we look forward to revisiting.
Yep, we heard about the Crow Fair, we'd love to see that. I first visited Red Lodge to ski 20 years ago, and visited in summer for the first time 3 years ago. In next week's episode we'll explore Red Lodge, Bearcreek, Beartooth Highway, Chief Joseph Highway, East Rosebud Lake and more.
I got to spend a few hours at Little Bighorn a bunch of years ago. There's nothing like being on site to appreciate what took place at these historic locations. The actual conflicts were nothing like what I thought I knew from Hollywood recreations. Thanks for sharing what you learned about the area.
Thanks Marc... I really liked that little town of Bridger. What a great place you found to campout on for such a reasonable rate. Definitely worth a second week... not crowded but uniquely positioned right in town. Fantastic! As always, your history lesson was great. Great adventures for sure. I really appreciated the first nations you reviewed and specifically the Chief of the Crow nation. That guy had a good heart to donate the land for everyone to enjoy. Gord

Wow that meadow was packed, lots of weekenders, Bridger looks like a cool little town, we love little towns like that which are still thriving. The town was smart to put those site in to help bring tourists and money. Awesome history about little big horn, my previous knowledge was front the movie, little big Man, haha. Larry
Glad that you enjoyed it Larry! Patricia is particularly attracted to small town city parks when we need hookups, and I can't say that I disagree with her. Many in the Great Plains are even free of charge, just to get people to stop in town and spend a little money.
Another excellent video Marc. Bridger looked like a great place plus all that fascinating history at the battlefield. Even kids growing up in the UK back in the day knew the story of Custer, although probably a little biased to one side! Looking forward to your next one. Hope you are keeping cool.
Nice video Marc. Jo-Ann and I have been to the Little Bighorn Battlefield several times. When I rode with the Patriot Guard Riders we had the honor of escorting a soldiers remains to the Military cemetery at Little Bighorn Battlefield.
Cool giving the story about the Crow tribe. I have a friend who lives on the reservation. A great lesson to be learned for all of us. Thanks for the share. We just were up on Beartooth Pass on June 30th. Amazing sights!
Glad that you enjoyed it, thanks for that. And yes, Beartooth Pass is indeed amazing. We'll be sharing that in this coming Wednesday's episode. We just missed you by a few days, for we filmed that segment of this week's epsiode on July 3.
What a neat little town, great camping park price was amazing, quite a history lesson you gave about that whole area, extremely interesting stories. Looks like a beautiful part of the country, you guys travel safe.

I may have commented about this video on one of your other ones, but the whole Montana area where you two were was just beautiful. It's a state we've not really been to yet, but have plans so that we can explore Glacier National Park!
Montana is a gorgeous state, and so topographically diverse. When you go to Glacier, just remember to not make the same mistake most RV travelers make, which is the same mistake that they make in Wyoming and Utah, too. They focus on the marquee destination (Glacier in Montana, Yellowstone/Grand Teton in Wyoming, the Mighty Five National parks in Utah) and just drive through the rest of the state to get there. Meanwhile there's a "whole rest of the state" that they miss, or don't take the time to explore -- and which often contains sights that are the equal or sometimes even exceed those of the destination that they're so focused on reaching, and are typically far less crowded, too.
@@GrandAdventure Amen to this, it's the very reason we started our motto #leaveordinarybehind We stayed a summer in Niagara Falls, NY and saw all the things AROUND the Falls. When Custer arrived at the Little Big Horn from North Dakota, he sent out two scouts. They came back an hour or so later. "We have some good news, and some bad news for you, General." " What's the bad news?" " It looks like every Indian in the world is right over that hill in warpaint. " " What's the good news?" "I don't think we are going back to North Dakota!"
True for everyone, Tom. And BTW there was a separate comment from you about the name of the Chief, but it's gone. I don't know if you deleted the comment or if it evaporated into the TH-cam ether, but it was Chief Plenty Coups.
Marc, If you paddle the Bighorn Canyon , put in at Horseshoe Bend on the Wyoming side. Plenty of camping there with potable water and dump station, and it's right at the mouth of the canyon. From there you could paddle all the way through the canyon to Barrys Landing. ( Long day of paddling ) You can also opt for the guided boat tour. However, in years of serious drought I have seen the water at Horseshoe Bend dried up until there was only mud there. In which case you have to camp at Barrys Landing. Late spring is the best time to go, at least that's when I liked it most. The Bighorn Canyon was always one of my favorite places to go. Loved taking pictures of the wild Mustangs and Bighorn Sheep. www.nps.gov/bica/planyourvisit/upload/Waterway-Trail-Guide.pdf
@@GrandAdventure We've been to both sides ( The Fort Smith, Montana side , and the Wyoming Side near Lovell, WY ). I prefer to start at the Wyoming side because you see a lot more. Driving through you will see Wild Mustang Horses and Wild Bighorn Sheep. And the canyon itself is absolutely breathtaking!
Going to Pryor Gap into the Pryor mountains on the Crow Indian Reservation you know you're trespassing right or did you ask the landowners if it was okay to be on their land I am a Crow Indian from the crow reservation
Lance, trespass requires a knowing intent to violate someone's property rights: law.justia.com/codes/montana/2017/title-45/chapter-6/part-2/section-45-6-203/ We found Prior Gap Road while poring over USGS topographic maps. There were no signs posting the land, and had there been any we would have respected them, just as we did when we found tribal postings on Grapevine Road heading west out of Fort Smith.
Is there any hope for heat to fade? On july 20th. I have a decision to make of high tailing it back to florida from colorado or to go back to utah. It sucks to no end being so close and only doing half the itinerary due to weather. Having offroaded out the wazoo i planned to boomerang back to wedge, goblin valley, capitol reef, escalante, bryce, page and kanab and Grand Canyon. But if it stays hot as hell… no way can i hike those spots. Grrr
It's definitely frustrating us as well this season, MTL. These temps are crazy. While we were in Bridger the normal highs are in the upper 70s to around 80, so they're running about 20 degrees above normal. That high pressure ridge over the West Coast needs to break down.
I have been looking at this area and was wondering where to camp. I saw this place on The Dyrt and was wondering ii it was a good spot. Thanks for the heads up. You were wise to bail on Colorado. It's way over crowded and over hyped. Everyone should go to Utah instead.
Glad that we were able to give you more insight on the campground, Doug. As for everyone going to Utah instead, we've got our own crowding issues over there. 😁
Noticed you skipped over why the Lakota left their reservations. It was because of the slaughter of the Buffalo that had taken place. Plus it was the only time waring tribes worker together against the settlers.

Loved this episode! We’ll be close next month so we thank you for the great tips for Little Big Horn!
How do you find the city park sites?
Thanks Kim! We found it via an online directory, and added it to The Dyrt as well.
If you like Bridger MT, You guys would love the town I grew up in: Gravelbourg SK Canada. Great camping at nearby Thompson Lake
We'll put that one on the list Marce! Thanks!

"With education you are the white mans equal, without education you are his victim." So true, even today, the key is education.
True for everyone, Tom. And BTW there was a separate comment from you about the name of the Chief, but it's gone. I don't know if you deleted the comment or if it evaporated into the TH-cam ether, but it was Chief Plenty Coups.
Marc,
If you paddle the Bighorn Canyon , put in at Horseshoe Bend on the Wyoming side.

Thanks for the tips John! One day we'll get back there to enjoy Bighorn Canyon as a destination unto itself.

We've been to both sides ( The Fort Smith, Montana side , and the Wyoming Side near Lovell, WY ).
Lance, trespass requires a knowing intent to violate someone's property rights: law.justia.com/codes/montana/2017/title-45/chapter-6/part-2/section-45-6-203/
We found Prior Gap Road while poring over USGS topographic maps. There were no signs posting the land, and had there been any we would have respected them, just as we did when we found tribal postings on Grapevine Road heading west out of Fort Smith.
One question I have is how do they know excact spots where men fell? I'm not questioning them just wondering.
As I understand it, they documented it when reinforcements arrived and discovered the carnage.
Peter is just one example of the kind of trolls female meteorologists have to deal with on social media.
Noticed you skipped over why the Lakota left their reservations. It was because of the slaughter of the Buffalo that had taken place. Plus it was the only time waring tribes worker together against the settlers.
There's some truth to that, Johnny. With so much to tell about the story of Little Bighorn we had to stay on topic.
After going to the 9-11 memorial and how somber and sad I felt, I don't think I want to go where people died anymore.
We certainly get that Bert. We were very moved by the experience at Little Bighorn.
Everything he's showing you is the reservation technically he's trespassing
It’s so sad they have to put up those energy sinks and bird dicers in such unspoiled country.
Yeah Jim, we have mixed emotions about them ourselves.
