  • What is it like living in Berlin, Germany as a digital nomad? I spent this day playing tourist, so I started by going on a tour of the Reichstag to learn more about the history of the German Parliament building. Then, while walking back through Brandenburg Gate, I ran into none other than The Rolling Stones! 😍 After finally getting some work done, I ended the day at an outdoor cinema, or Freiluftskino, seeing a movie with a good friend. This crazy day was a great reminder of how lucky I am to be living in Berlin.

    Nice video!
Regarding the Reichstag building, there are two details that are worth mentioning imho. One is the wrapping by Christo and Jean Claude in 1995, before it was completely "overhauled" by Norman Foster. I accidentally happened to see it in person, and it was a great atmosphere. At the time, this was controversial especially among more conservative people. But in hindsight, it was a great and surprisingly couragious decision, and the building underwent an enourmous metamorphosis. The image of the Reichstag as the symbol of the old (the Kaiserreich and the failed Weimar Republic; not the nazis, because they actually hated it as a democratic symbol and never used it) was practically changed overnight. The new cupola and the ample use of glass with its effect of lightness and transparency, and the spacious modern interior made a completely new building out of that old pile of bricks. It's a symbiosis of old and new that I can appreciate more and more when I see the claustrophobic atmosphere of the kindergarten in Westminster or the stiff, antiquated caves called the chambers of Congress (no offense meant 😉). In neither of those you will ever see a ray of sunlight or seemingly a breath of fresh air. Sometimes, new beginnings have great benefits...
Also, during the renovation, graffiti from Soviet soldiers from the first days and weeks after the war were uncovered and preserved as a daily reminder of what happens when this parliament fails in its responsibilites. History and its direct consequences are never far away in Berlin.
Maybe that's part of the appeal of Berlin. The old lady does not hide her scars behind excessive makeup. And she's certainly never one of those establishment bores...
    Take care!
