70 year old dude here, I am proud to say I seen these guys three times before the plane crash in 77 and I went to see the modern band in 2024 with Ronnie's brother singing keeping the music alive.... Best southern rock group ever....
@@christhrasher9892 AGREED! I was lucky enough to meet Dave Hlubak when my brother's band opened for his band SRA (Southern Rock Allstars) He sat and talked to me like we were old friends. My brother had borrowed my guitar for the show..Dave ended up autographing it for me!!
Man, T for Texas live from Knebworth is absolutely fire. To take a 1920’s country/yodel song and turn into a smouldering southern rock epic was insane. The crowd looks like they were put in a slow boil.
This was during a rough patch. Guitarist Ed King left the band,so it was Gary Rossington and Allen Collins carrying the guitar work here. They would recoup and find another guitarist in Steve Gaines, who was backup singer Cassie Gaines' younger brother, and record One More From The Road (live) and Street Survivors, their last album before the tragic plane crash.
Ed King admitted in an interview I saw on youTube that the reason he left is because he just got tired of Ronnie's "abuse" when they were on the road. Ronnie could really be a mean guy and a certified a-hole, especially when he was drinking. The story I believe Gary told once is that when they were getting the band together in the early days, Ronnie went to Allen Collin's house to talk to him about getting a band together and when Allen saw Ronnie coming he ran away and climbed up in a tree because he thought Ronnie had come there to beat him up. Ronnie was a school bully and the guys were all afraid of him. Drummer, Artimus Pyle in another interview I saw on youTube also talked a little about how Ronnie would abuse the other band members, but Ronnie wouldn't mess with Artimus because he didn't grow up with him so Ronnie showed him more respect. Also Artimus mentioned he had just gotten out of the Marines and was in pretty good shape and indicated that he wouldn't have taken any shyt from Ronnie anyway. But Artimus did say he respected Ronnie as the leader of the band and greatly admired him for his music and songwriting. Ronnie Van Zant definitely had some apparent personal and anger issues that he liked to take out on those around him, but he had talent.
You should listen to the live version of “Tuesday’s gone“. It is without a doubt, my all-time favorite Skynyrd song, and specifically that performance.
Ronnie Vanzant has a sound of his own. His brother Johnny has done a great job keeping Skynard alive. Check out some of Donnie Vanzant the 3rd Vanzant brother and lead singer of 38 Special, also from Jacksonville Florida.
Speaking of the bass guitar low end of it, Leon Wilkeson was a dang beast. That guy was phenomenal. And he was such a funny personality, wearing that Viking hat and his huge long beard and like cut off jean shorts and boots and whatnot, laugh. And he could rock so hard for hours, just like the rest of them. ❤️
The "bullets" Ronnie is referring to are the bullets by your name when you have a record climbing the charts. This song is about record sales and the "pencil pushers" at MCA records and their questionable bookkeeping. It's worded in a way to give it a cowboy western vibe, but it's really about the music industry.
Old AM Top 40 DJ’s used to say a song was “moving up the charts with a bullet”, meaning fast. Billboard marked fast rising songs with a bullet icon. That’s what the song is about.
Great choice 🚄 y’all should know that Skynyrd from before the horrible plane crash is the real Skynyrd with Ronnie Van Zant on vocals, guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister Cassie ( part of their trio of female backup singers called the Honkettes ) also died in the crash 😔
Great Choice by the Kings of Southern Rock!! Skynyrd was loaded with talent at every spot!! I'd love ro see y'all do a reaction to Marshall Tucker Band's "Can't You See." Thanks guys for all You do!
Amber , you are on point! There are so many original songs that get me going! One of my favorites is. “T for Texas”. It’s a cover of an old jimmy Roger’s song. They make it their own! Y’all make me happy and I try to live my life making it easier for everyone else.
Sending love and encouragement to you both! It's tough to do 3 videos every day. And with all the turmoil going on with the weather related destruction, it's tough to stay continuously in a good mood. But, both of you know this, love is the most powerful thing you can receive to be uplifted. So, we of the RSR Family send you love from our hearts and souls. So, I send you that love to you to sustain you, but with the RSR Family adding to that love, we'll help you the best we can to uplift you both. ♥️🌹♥️🌹
Skynyrd was the first concert I attended. 1977, 17 yrs old, only a couple of months prior to that terrible plane crash. They were fabulous on stage, interacting with the crowd and playing everything we wanted to hear. This is among my top 3 or 4 of their songs. Such a great rhythmic beat... and who can stand still? Next reaction to their 🎵 should be "That Smell", if you haven't already done so. Was it "Going Up the Country" by Canned Heat? "On the Road Again?" Those are their biggest hits, for good reason. Be blessed ❤❤❤
Gotta love Skynard! This is one of my favorites!!! Southern Rock at its best!! Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchet, Triumph, 38 Special are some others. Thank you both for reacting!! ❤❤❤❤
Four Walls of Raiford, Mr Banker, That Smell, All I Can Do Is Write About It, Don’t Ask Me No Questions, and definitely T for Texas are all great Skynyrd songs you guys should check out ❤
Y'all! I had a radio song just come back to me today. You've reacted to the band before but not this song: England Dan & John Ford Coley - We'll Never Have To Say Goodbye Again. The vocals are so good. Some great high notes, strong melody, and chorus. I'm sure you'll love it. :)
You both do a amazing job on these reactions. Amber has grown so much on recognition of the instrumental side of the reactions these days.. might I suggest Marshall Tucker band, 38 Special which has Ronnie's Brother on guitar. Outlaws songs like Hurry Sundown ghost riders in the sky. Green Grass and High tides is a MUST to hear. Black foot song Train train. Allman brothers band is a great SOUTHERN rock band the Oak Ridge Boys, there are just to many to list
This is one of my all-time favorite Skynyrd songs. There’s a great live version of this, from the live reunion album, which features another guitar player named Steve Morse . He had left music at one point to pursue becoming an airline pilot, but Skynyrd asked him to perform on this live recording. It’s an interesting tale, if you wanted to look into it.
Here's a band you may not have heard yet: Blackberry Smoke - "Shakin’ Hands with the Holy Ghost"; "Up In Smoke"; "Leave A Scar". There are a few songs. Emerging from Atlanta in the early 2000s, this band has become one of Southern rock's most respected modern acts. Their fusion of blues, country, and soul with traditional rock sensibilities has earned them critical acclaim and a devoted fan base. With relentless touring and consistent album releases, they're helping to keep the spirit of Southern rock alive today.
Allman Brothers, .38 Special (VERY MUCH like Lynyrd Skynyrd ... lead singer of both groups were brothers), ZZ Top, Molly Hatchet, Wet Willie, The Marshall Tucker Band, even Charlie Daniels (some) are ALL great 70's Southern Rock Bands.
