Been playing for several years as a hobby mostly (primarily by ear) I struggled a lot with learning to read as anytime I recognized something the attention span for the sheets just vanished and my ear took over.
That's an issue for another day, however, the way you described the expansion of the chords into emotions/feelings was really well done, I'm going to experiment some and implement these into my playing more, thanks!

I'm always astounded by just how difficult the 1st movement of the "moonlight" sonata is. I don't think this is a beginner piece, like it's usually characterized.
Walid did a really good job, especially in front of a camera recording for youtube (!!), I'm not sure if I'd actually play any better than him in that scenario, but you can definetly feel that there is room to improve the interpretation. Keep at it friend, you're awesome
Thank you so much! My composition Blossom starts off very simple. That's why I didn't bother adding inversions to the beginning. I wanted the melody to build as the song progressed. If you ever have time to listen to the rest off camera, you might see what I mean. I do think I am sitting too low. So, I will buy a new piano seat. I really appreciate your advice :)

I did listen through the whole piece in full but I had to edit down quite a lot of filming to get through as many recordings without the video being incredibly long 🙂 Its a really nice piece and I do like how you arpeggiate the chords in the second half to make it feel more flowing 🎹

That’s so interesting what you said about understanding why certain chords are being used and how that can help you emote in your playing!
About 6 years ago, I decided (as a 31-year-old) to pick up piano. I never had the opportunity to learn any kind of instrument growing up, but the piano has always interested me, and I really enjoy listening to piano music. After 2 years of lessons, life got in the way and I took a pause from playing for the past 4 years.
I have been watching many YT pianists in the meantime however and it always remained something that I wanted to pick up. Finding your channel about 3 weeks ago was the final push I needed to use that most holy of traditions: New Years resolutions. As such, I have picked up my old books again and started from scratch, using the tips in your various videos to do it properly this time around. No 'run before you walk' learning of pieces just by memorizing the sequence of keys (which I did before): proper sight reading, understanding notes and music theory to a certain degree and just practise.

You’ve become one of my favorite piano channels to watch. The editing is very smooth and you’re definitely underrated compared to what’s out there. Been playing for a month but will definitely send in a video a year from now if you’re still doing these critiques!
I play 4 instruments and I compose for handpan and my handpan teacher gave me a precious lesson
When I was composing my first piece I wanted to ask him for help but he gave me no help
You may ask why though?
It's because he told me it's your own piece if I give you any advice it wouldn't be your piece anymore cause I'd be having a part in it and after that I fixed the problem myself and the piece came out beautiful

Om ... really enjoyed this-loved the interaction with the players & your comments on how to play/hand placement/seating position... Im such a novice, whilst learning (on centre keys) one tends to sit over these few keys.. no thought for being able to reach peripheral keys ! Thanks v much!
Ive been having online piano lessons since September 2022 and its going great. Im really enjoying them. I can sight read quite well now as i sight read everytime i play the piano.
I've recently started the grade 1 music book as i done the pre grades. Never thought piano would be this much fun but it turns out it is once you get into it

Great tips! It would be nice if you would review more of Frank Tedesco's playing. I don't understand how he plays classical music by ear.
That first players tune sounds like the start of my immortal by evanescence.

Other than me severely not knowing how to read because I had incomplete education I use a real piano but it is so hard to play a key very fast like D, E and theme C D I can sometimes do it but not all the time and I do play my fingers fast it just doesn’t always sound
This issue is alleviated when I play higher pitches so maybe it is not sensitive enough for me to play at lower pitches
My second issue is don’t know why I have this weird obsession in playing as fast as I can it is really fun for me until I realize that I have to jump to certain keys very fast
Another issue is when I start playing my right hand fast my left hand goes a little faster but sometimes this is not what you are supposed to do :/
I think I’ll improve but how I’ve been learning songs is by memorizing someone else play it and I try to play it this keeps happening until I learn it and if I have the sheet I try to understand it but I may not sometimes
There has been times where I have to play a chord that is one key out of reach which sucks since that means I technically can’t play that part of a song :(
Advise is to double check your fingering that may be the issue with certain chords. If possible to reach notes using both L and R hand do that. For playing fast, try to remember basics and play slow but steady/accurate. Learning by sheets is useful at least for practicing blocks over and over. Do a segment slow, repeatedly, accurately, and you'll develop very strong GOOD muscle memory that will translate to quicker playing.

I am an advanced pianist. I am at the end of learning Rondo Alla Turca by Mozart, which is grade 7 I believe. I'm ready to take my next step into grade 8 pieces. Do you think if I can play Rondo Alla Turca very well, do I have the ability to play Animenz's arrangement of Unravel? I know it's an incredibly difficult piece, but I love how it sounds and it would be my dream to play it.
I play rondo alla turca and I believe Unravel by Animenz is on a completely different level. The techniques and complexity is much higher in my opinion.

The first one is very similar to a famous pop song i forgot the name but the female singer comes in with a soft soothing voice. Maybe it’s this gothic group and i forgot its name too. My alzheimers might have started.

As for the first player, I thought the his wrists were rather dropped and it might help if he lifted them. That might be just me; Matthew didn't say anything.
As for Claire de Lune, I'm always sad when I hear the piece played in a different key than intended... rhythm also seems off... might be one of those running before walking moments...
Good catch on Ryan! It hurt my hands just watching him play. 😅 Yes, if you play like that for a long time, you could give yourself carpal tunnel syndrome.
I can't quite tell for sure but some of the players seemed to be using plain keyboards? I highly suggest you invest in a weighted keyboard that mimics a piano more closely. It helps to have that when working with things like dynamics and articulation.

So.. if one wanted to send you a video of themselves playing, but *didn't* want the whole world to see it, is that a possibility? Lol
I picked up the piano 2 years ago. First I tried to learn on TH-cam and a different piano app I found on a TH-cam channel, but it just wasn't clicking. I tried an in person teacher but they didn't feel right either. I have a different in person teacher that I see weekly, while also following your channel and a couple other pianists. I'm trying to be patient and not expect my playing to advance faster than it should, especially when kids and life keep getting in the way.
Even after 2 years, I still feel a little lost without a real practice routine, and like I'm not as far as I should be given how long I've been playing. I just try and focus on learning the scales, and sight reading/theory while trying to learn songs that pique my interest.
I guess I'm just asking for advice? I try to implement the techniques from your videos, but I feel like I don't have a clear direction.

And if you already have a teacher, you may want to be more vocal about your desires and concerns of lack of clear practice routine (assuming you haven't done so already)
Hey, I feel your pain! I lot of people struggle finding the right path and knowing what to do!
It sounds like you maybe need a goal that aligns with what you actually want to get out of playing the piano...learning scales, sight reading and theory are all super important, but they should all be a part of the puzzle that helps you get to where you want to be.
So, I have some questions for you:
If you had the ability to do/play anything on the piano, what would it be?
What do you struggle with the most that's stopping you from being able to do that?
What can you work on that is going to help you get better at those things?

I guess I'm not sure if I have a goal? I've always loved music, and I've always wanted to play the piano, it's such an inspiring instrument. I started by jumping into playing songs I listen to and could sing along to, but felt I was doing myself a disservice by not reading sheet music and just following TH-cam videos and using basic chord patterns. I want to be able to not just play the songs I want, but to understand what I'm playing also.
So I went back to basics for a bit and this was when I thought doing in person lessons would maybe help with some more guidance and direction, but maybe I just haven't found the right teacher? I've been bumped around a bit so I've had to "start over" with teachers a few times.
If I could just sit down and do anything at the piano, I'd want to be able to sit down at the piano and play how I'm feeling by also understanding what I'm playing and why.
My vision is probably holding me back a bit, as I find all the sheet music and music books are usually in a large font, and if I blow it up then there's large pauses where I'm switching pages. My back is another, tldr I was in a car accident and have had spinal surgery so I can't sit and practice for super long, which is where I'm trying to practice some patience with myself.
Outside of those, and just trying to practice more, I'm not really sure what else is holding me back. I find dynamics a bit hard because my keyboard has semi-weighted keys so I'm hoping I can get my hands on a full weighted one soon. I noticed such a difference compared to the piano and the music studio, so I'm focusing on how my fingers are hitting the keys more than I should.
I also don't have a solid practice routine down for when I sit down at the piano. I usually run through scales a couple times before I dive into whatever piece I'm trying to learn, but I feel like there should be more to it. I've asked a few times, but maybe I just need to be more vocal with my teacher and what I'm looking for.

i diddn't saw the submission ;((( i could have submitted my recording i've been playing for about 4 years on a 61 key piano which was like 30 dollars and its so bad it dosen't have weighted keys and the black keys are just falling off i can take them out of the piano with ease and idk how but i learned mvt 3 on a 61 key by making arrangements to the piece and currently im working on la capenella im not done yet but i know more than half the piece and i can play many more pieces some which are easy pieces i can play by ear but now i can't play these pieces now cause the black keys are destroyed and i can't play anything. i don't know what to do cause my family is in a bit of a dilema and they can't buy me a new piano like theres no chance that i can spend like 500dollars when i've been playing on a trashy 61 key for about 4 years now ;(((. one more thing is that i'm self taught/

I’ve recently discovered your channel, and you have some great advice; however, I don’t know if this is just for the video so that you can see yourself and the piano in frame, but your keyboard is definitely positioned too high. You can definitely see the strain on your wrists. Lowering the keyboard to a height around and maybe slightly lower than your elbows when sitting up straight may reduce some of the tension in your playing and make you sound more fluid.
I think you might be onto something! 😂 I’m sat too high for these videos so that you can see me and the keys…I normally sit so that my arms are just over a right angle 📐
However…even playing backwards…I was tensionless 😉
It's funny how playing a more impressive piece, when it's too much of a stretch, can sound less impressive compared to a simple piece played well. Says me, the super beginner, no 'late' about it 😂

I find with the simple pieces my teacher gives me, I can make it sound musical and they're pretty easy to pick up. Something that I'm learning as more of a stretch goal is Zanarkand, which is what made me actually start learning piano - my brain is at 200% just getting the notes right never mind anything else 😂

Hello I'm 16 years old pianist. Started playing piano 1 and half year ago and I have 1 song that I can play and send video so you can react and give me some tips what I can work for.
I started first playing piano on mobile and I got obsessed with it after that few weeks later my school started and I asked my teacher if I can play in 1 hour break piano. And I did. I learned in 1 hour 1 song called "sunsetz-cigarettes after sx" after that I was always playing piano in school( I have no piano or keyboard in house because my family can't afford piano because we have financial problems) I started learning experience by ludvico einaudi and some pieces by ludvico einaud also learned ala by Joseph beving. After all of this I've had enough and started learning beethoven piece 3rd movement but I know only half . I started performing front of school with 600+ the pieces I learned and I'm proud of myself for how I succeed with just starting on phone.
