I spent the whole beginning of the song lost in syncopation land, and you brought me out of it skillfully! I love a song that can do that well. Thanks for sharing, sounds great.
A Friend of mine just got two of these for his studio and I am lucky enough to be able to work with an older M49 at my workplace. They sound incredible. Once again, awesome review.
Alec again, I came here for your music. I have now come to a conclusion you will sound great also in a 20€ microphone. Cause your not just a great musician but a brilliant sound engineer. Keep it going. PS: the Neumann mic sounds brilliant too.
FYI: Neumann did not "ditch" the original Tuchel connector for a "modern-style" connector, but uses the exact same form factor and connector type used on all M(2)49 delivered to the German broadcast system in the 1960s. I.e. the mic can be operated with any original 1960s seven-conductor M2xx cable and vice versa.
It's not THAT expensive though. It's 8 grand basically. Have you looked at the price of vintage 47s lately? They're around 30 grand. Clone companies like Telefunken USA charge 11 grand for their copy of the 251 so 8 grand for the original article is not that bad. Nord charge $5700 for their new Stage 4 digital piano for example. Or if you're a guitarist you'll pay 5 grand for a Les Paul. Again, comparatively it's not bad. It's affordable ultimately. Not cheap but within reach. I bought a U67 reissue and couldn't be happier though. If 8 grand is too much then you can grab a U67, which is amazing, for about 6. Great times for microphone lovers.
@@Screaming-Trees it's a beautiful mic but 8.5 grand goes a long way for most folks towards a down payment on a house or paying off 25% of your student loans, if you have an average amount of student loan debt (35k-40k)...
@@revevague6256 Sure. If you're a student or are saddled with student debt or other kind of debt this microphone is a bridge too far probably. But if you're a professional cutting records this new Neumann line is really a life saver. Being able to pick up a U67 for around 6 grand is incredible. Rewind back just a few years and basically the situation was a complete disaster. If you wanted a Neumann tube mic there was nothing. You had to go vintage which even at the time was hovering around 30 grand (about half that for U67). I would say the situation has not just improved it has been addressed completely. Had Neumann not done this you'd be faced with a grim reality we've all been faced with for the last however many years since they stopped production of these. Not a persuasive argument if you're in debt already (having to spend 8 grand I mean) but rewind just a couple of years and you'll see it was much, much worse. Completely untenable. But yeah if you're a student or have student debt this is not the microphone for you mate. If you're a pro cutting records though that's another matter.

Well I mostly just record hip hop style vocals so for you between the mics what differences are you hearing I do hear more fullness and warmth in the 49v but for me it’s very minor 🙏 thank you
Agreed! They are surprisingly different. :) the 67 feels a little darker and thicker to me. Perhaps a little more coloured. The 49 feels a little more effortless and open to me. I’m sure everyone will have their own opinions on this though.
I think the two videos speak for themselves. :) you can compare the two tones of the mics and decide for yourself what you think. Personally, the M49 felt more open and a little less harmonically colored than the U67, perhaps it was a little more open on the top. Love them both, want a pair of M49’s to go with my U67’s.
You shouldn't be allowed to review Neumann gear. 😅 For my sake, for your sake. I know that you will buy two and I one, eventually. But in the mean time, let's pretend that we won't 🙈😋🎶
It’s one of the hardest parts about reviewing stuff! Specially when it’s great, I know that sometimes it’s more likely that I will purchase something I have reviewed in the future.
i understand that it sounds amazing, but $8500? seriously?!? let's be honest: there's no way it costs even a quarter of that for them to produce it. so why not sell it for even half the price, i'm sure they would still be making a profit, yet so many more people would be able to afford it!? and if it really costs so much to make one, then they must be doing something wrong, as you can make a motorcycle or a cheap car for that amount of money. something somewhere does not make sense...
Your "logic" is what makes no sense. Do you really think that products like this are only valued by the cost of the raw materials? Does the design and workmanship have no value? Do the people who so skillfully build it not deserve to be paid? I guarantee, you have absolutely no idea how much this microphone costs Neumann to make... Ever heard of "economies of scale?" Seriously how many of these do you think they make compared to a motorcycle or a cheap car--- and I haven't seen a car sell new for anywhere near $8k since the 1980s... not sure what planet you are living on, but it isn't Earth in 2023!

Hey James! :) my chain for my spoken word is: RX10 mouth de-click, soothe (de-essing and harshness control), UA1176 Rev A, UAD Pultec, Fabfilter PRO Q3. :)

Thanks Alec, you’re a generous soul!
Ok I heard the shootout between this and the tlm 49 and I felt like the differences were very minor and subtle 🤷♂️ none the less beautiful mic but the tlm 49 is dam near just as good I feel like
If the TLM 49 does it for you, then it’s the right mic for your jobs! :)
Well I mostly just record hip hop style vocals so for you between the mics what differences are you hearing I do hear more fullness and warmth in the 49v but for me it’s very minor 🙏 thank you
Great vid! Which do you prefer for vocals, the m49v or u67 reissue?
Thanks so much Joshua! :) On my voice the M49 is a great match, I prefer it over the U67.
Seems to sound incredible. What is your thoughts on this M49 vs the U67?
Agreed! They are surprisingly different. :) the 67 feels a little darker and thicker to me. Perhaps a little more coloured. The 49 feels a little more effortless and open to me. I’m sure everyone will have their own opinions on this though.
@@alecbrits Looks like you kept a pair of U67's? Was it because the price on the 49's or you just preferred the 67's?
What would say the differences are between this and the u67? Sense you’ve now have tried both
I think the two videos speak for themselves. :) you can compare the two tones of the mics and decide for yourself what you think. Personally, the M49 felt more open and a little less harmonically colored than the U67, perhaps it was a little more open on the top. Love them both, want a pair of M49’s to go with my U67’s.
Great song.
Thank you so much! :)
And once again a fantastic review. £7,475 for a million buck vocal sound seems like a good deal. If you can. I sure can't.
Thanks so much Simon! :) yeah agreed with you there.
Sounds like the Flea 49 had more mojo!
I’d be happy with either! :)
GREAT SONG !!!!
Thank you!! :)
Is the Cable Made By Gotham? If so That is the Best Tube Mic Cable on the Planet! No need to gripe if its Gotham.
It’s Neumanns own cable from what I can see. :)
Any good mic I need 2
You and me both Hadley. :)
A/D conversion?
Apollo X16. :)
@@alecbrits Very interesting indeed.
"Don't raise your voice, improve your argument." *
Sure! :)
Bought one... what about you Alec?😋
@@axturn not yet! :) I’m sure I will in the future though. I miss having it around! Congratulations on your purchase.
@@alecbritsA dream come true!
i understand that it sounds amazing, but $8500? seriously?!? let's be honest: there's no way it costs even a quarter of that for them to produce it. so why not sell it for even half the price, i'm sure they would still be making a profit, yet so many more people would be able to afford it!? and if it really costs so much to make one, then they must be doing something wrong, as you can make a motorcycle or a cheap car for that amount of money. something somewhere does not make sense...
Thanks for your insight! :)
@@weschilton true that and the fact it's hand made German masterpiece.
brilliant
Thank you so much! :D
