    Just a helpful note: I installed the AOS yesterday and it took hours to hook up the hoses. Found one of the nipples and got first hose on fairly quick. Thought it was on the PCV valve. We could not find the intake nipple??? Ruined my arm getting in there too many times. Finally after several hours I figured it out!!!! The PCV nipple should be pointing toward the firewall, but it had turned and was pointing toward the passenger tire. That is why we could not find the second nipple for hose. Finally got the nipple turned toward the firewall and it was pretty easy then. Learn from my experience, and the install is not very hard.

    Thank for the video FM. Took an hour, one sore forearm. Key is to expand the hose ends and a small bit of oil like mentioned by others. Makes the job straight forward.

    The rear hoses aren't so bad if you take the time to 'practice' a few times and visualize what you'll be doing. Could not have done it without this video, though!

    This was not nearly as difficult to install as the video made out. I think I did the entire install, start to finish, in about 45 minutes. The hardest thing, as mentioned, is the nipple on the engine block. I used a drop of oil in the hose, then shoved the handle of a ratchet wrench into the end of that hose for a minute or two to stretch it out slightly. I removed the handle, and immediately put the hose onto the nipple - it slid right on using only one hand, no fuss.
    I do wish there was something that screwed into the drain plug so that a hose could be run down to the bottom of the engine bay to drain, rather than having to remove the AOS from its bracket in order to drain it.

      This system looks like a total pain in the ass. A lot of catch can systems have a dip stick that seems like it would be helpful. Taking this thing on and off to check the levels every 1000 miles is gonna suck googs.

      On a direct injection engine it's usually considered one of those "better safe than sorry" items for preventative maintenance especially on turbo cars. Verus has a little more info on their site, and there is a lot of information on the Miata forums as well.

    Very informative and detailed video. Are the hoses supplied oil resistant? This is important because a hose made for lets say fuel line hose would breakdown from oil mist, and quicker then one may think. Also I would opt with using a bit of silicone lube instead of a drop of oil on hose ends since the silicone won't damage rubber and plastic like a petroleum lube would; but if the hose material is intended to carry oil then the drop of oil will not cause the rubber to break down.

      Good points and yes, the included hose is rated for oil.

    What's the difference between an AOS and an oil catch can? Could we use both? Is AOS CARB compliant?

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As far as terminology, an Air-Oil-Separator is pretty much the same thing as a high-quality "catch-can". The Verus unit is a bit more advanced than the average catch can tho, and features multiple micron filters, baffles and includes hoses that attach to both the crank case and head. You would need a high-quality dual-catch can set-up to match the all-in-one Verus AOS.

  • @JonathanEbert-JE
    @JonathanEbert-JE 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I checked on Verus's website but didn't see anything regarding the need to replace or clean those 4 filters inside the AOS. Is there any need to maintain those filters over time?

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From our experience those don't really need to be cleaned as the oil and moisture should drip down eventually. You could clean them if you wanted, but we haven't found it necessary yet.

    The video shows two nipple openings on the engine stand alone block. I have the hose attached to the PCV valve. I cannot get the intake manifold hose attached. Tried for 2 hours. Arms too big I guess. But perhaps I’m trying to fit it on the wrong nipple?Not much skin left on the arm but would try again. Otherwise I have to take the manifold off.

    Don’t want to mess this up.
    Please confirm the hose from the swiveling purple PCV valve connects to the check valve on the AOS (nozzle 3 when counting from the the front of the car)
    Is that the right way?

      Check out the official written instructions from Verus, it might make things easier to explain:

    Verus's instructions show the hose going on the bottom nipple on the intake, (the one under that screw) where as you put it the the top one Which one is correct? haha

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The instructions and the video should be correct. The large barb with the check valve should go to the intake manifold, while the port closest to the engine on the air oil separator should go to the PCV valve, or "Engine block" as it's labelled in the Verus instructions.

    Hi, i installed one of these to my supercharged ND so it had to be placed in another position, but after 2k miles when i went to drain it there was nothing in it, did i do something wrong or is it supposed to return all the fluids back? seemed to dry to me

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      On our ND, we rarely ever have more than a few drips. Granted, it's not driven a massive amount. A healthy engine shouldn't really have much blow by, but I'd still at least check it after every oil change.
      If you're worried about it, be sure to double check that all your connections are correct. Other than that, nothing seems obviously out of the ordinary.

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If your engine is healthy and you're not running too much boost, you might not get much accumulation in the AOS which is a good thing.

    Any problems with pressure leaking between the crank and intake through the system on higher PSI engines? I’ll be running between 14-16 psi in my 2018 club and heard there may be an issue with this.

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      While it may be possible under extreme conditions because the two halves in the Verus separator share a drain, this is not likely, and not something we've seen, due to the built in PCV valving inside the Verus connectors. Wondering why this one has 2 paths but all the other catch cans on the market only go on one? Also, since this system shows that when unbolted, it is 2 separate hollow halves bolten together with no seal in between, how does it prevent the oil from seeping through eachother's channels or simply mixing together? Is the shaped channels just general air flow guidance? just curious.
    Also wondering if anyone thought about a fuel injector that can be either manually sprayed into the throttle body or "fed" just to suck fuel down the intake ports so the valves can get chemically cleaned as you drive that way. Meth kits have proven not to clean anything, but I think the properties in actual gasoline will.

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On most applications, the optimum plan would be to have two catch cans - One on the intake side, one on the exhaust. This Verus unit combines them into one smart AOS. There is no need for separate reservoirs, since the hose barbs on the Verus unit have check valves installed to prevent back flow.

    Not sure why they call it an AOS. It is technically a OCC. You have to drain it regularly

    • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      An AOS will recirculate back into the engine. On healthy engines without excessive amounts of blowby, you probably won't need to empty it very much.
      An OCC will usually vent oil vapors to atmosphere and make a mess under your hood, rather than recirculate.
      Two very similar parts, but commonly misconstrued.

    1st 1000 miles and got no oil on the catch can. I checked and rechecked to make sure the installation is correct and its good with no kinks either. So far no signs of busted seals. I was positive I'd get some oil in the can to make an average reading. I even checked the valves were working before installation and they are. Im perplexed 🤔. Fukit

      We've seen a lot of variation of how much this kit actually catches, and it can vary a lot depending on your location, oil used maintenance schedule, mileage, etc. Even if you aren't seeing anything in the catch can, consider it good long term preventative maintenance ;)

    It would be nice to see a naturally asperated install (of another type of oil separator) on a NA as well in the future. I am planning on using a KazeSpec Engineering 2 Chamber Oil Catch Can on my NA. I don't think you sell them but it would be nice to see another install. Not sure either if I would need a check valve for my intake line or not. Do ALL intake lines need check valves? I putting in my own fabbed up catch cans in my 1996 Dodge Ram 5.9 and the video brought up that question for that install as well. Thanks Again for another great video. I have really been enjoying them. Chris
