I just want to say that through this podcast is how I got to know Mike Israetel (more than 2 years ago) and since then, I've put on 10 kgs of muscle and started on a quest to the very fullfilling goal of learning everything related to muscle hypertrophy and I'm enyoing the road so far. I think the most refreshing thing about Mike is that he has so many phd's and is so brilliantly smart, but he is still able to admit when he is wrong. When you can be almost a true master at something and still question things it shows that there is always more to be learned.

    A quick Thank You for Revive Stronger, it is because of you guys that I finally learned (primarily from your content, Eric Helms books and Mike Isratetel, who I did not know before visiting your channel) how to train and eat right and how to reach my physique goals, almost there :) There is still something though that spikes my curiosity, that seems to be kind of a mystery because nobody is really talking about it, and that is all the principles that these celebrity trainers use to get actors in amazing shape for roles. They seem to be using all kinds of fancy techniques, like measuring food intake with fists and eating 5x a day, low carb/keto, doing cardio and resistance training in the same session or day, weird exercises that I never saw anybody doing before... I guess some of that is just for fancy content on social media, but I have not found anybody talking about the real principles they use, and apparently some of the trainers are actually achieving really good results in a rather short amount of time. So I wonder if there are any secrets, maybe you know more about it? It would be cool to get one of these trainers on your show for an interview.

    • @ReviveStronger
      @ReviveStronger  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think, most of them are probably full of shit and have no idea about proper training (unfortunately).
      If someone gets paid millions of dollars to just get in shape in a short period of time, there's a lot that goes into it. Probably not much of the training principles though.
      - Pascal

    • @johnhunter743
      @johnhunter743 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ReviveStronger That's probably true, a lot of what they say they are doing is going against what bodybuilders / physique athletes are doing. Some actors are getting in great shape though, so I thought there might be something that they do not talk about, on the other hand, why would actors use anything different to get in shape for a role than pro physique athletes who are stepping on stage, when the athletes are getting even better results :D

    • @ReviveStronger
      @ReviveStronger  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnhunter743 sorry but I wholeheartedly disagree with that they're anywhere near what pro level physique athletes look like. Also, there's always make up and CGI at play too.
      Why would they use anything else? Because they don't know any better? Probably no one cares for bodybuilding in Hollywood, why would they, thus, they probably don't know good coaches and don't have to. Even ifbb pro bodybuilding coaches use more than questionable methodologies. Drugs, genetics and the work ethic probably mask most of the shitty methodologies though. Same applies to actors.

    • @johnhunter743
      @johnhunter743 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ReviveStronger I think you misunderstood what I said above, I totally agree that the pro athletes look much more impressive and obviously get much better results, that's why I was thinking that it does not make much sense for actors/their coaches to use different methods than the pros, since the pros are the ones who are leaner and more muscular and know better what works and what not (at least their coaches). So I think you are probably right by saying the celebrity trainers are full of shit, a lot of what they are talking about is too different to what you and other experts are teaching and what I learned, that's why I was curious. I already had a feeling that there is nothing special going on behind the scenes :D (except for the motivating pay check for the actor)

    • @ELkORji
      @ELkORji 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Holywood actors have very good pharmacology.

    What is your opinion on the top set/back off set approach that Jordan Peters advocates? Quite a few other guys I follow on social media also advocate this method and seem to be confident that it is superior to doing straight sets.

    • @VladDTeach
      @VladDTeach 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also curious. At least for when you're strong enough and needs 6 mandatory warm up sets to keep your body from snapping

    • @MJ-kb1sy
      @MJ-kb1sy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it is a form of autoregulation. i'm guessing that they are basing their back off sets off the RPE that they retrieved from their top set/previous set. so they are autoregulate their weight selection (intensity). you could also just leave on the same weight but autoregulate the reps by stopping at a certain RIR/RPE. both methods are fine and a tool to keep your fatigue in check and much better suited for intermediate/advanced lifters since the perception of effort of a novice is most likely not really developed yet to use this effectively.

      I wanna try doing this on my mpt but how high and how low did you 'lie'? I mean, what's the idea? to have the first half of the week fall within 8-12 reps and the later half be 15-20 reps?

    • @williamsheppard2026
      @williamsheppard2026 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Moses Ikonikoff for me more to get the lifts in the rep range that i personally benefit the most from. so, for example, you might benefit more from good mornings in the 8-10 range and leg curls in the 15-20 range. just put in a higher value for the good mornings and a lower value for the leg curls. that being said, if you’re making good progress pain-free then i wouldn’t change anything.

    • @confirmameesta
      @confirmameesta 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@williamsheppard2026 right. that makes sense but I don't think that's what Mike was saying in the video, was it? it sounded like he was arguing for having a heavier start of the week and lighter end of the week. In any case, in the question after that he was talking about how mixing up rep ranges in the same week is probably a 'meh' idea, so now I'm confused. lol.

    • @williamsheppard2026
      @williamsheppard2026 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Moses Ikonikoff more like a heavier start to your mesocycle. so you could guesstimate something like your current 8rm for the first time you run the template (so you’re right around 6-ish reps on the 3 rir weeks). then run it again with your 10rm, 12rm, etc. and the mixing of rep ranges is more exercise-specific, like using higher reps on flyes. but just experiment with it and see what works for you!

    On the philosophy/critical thinking question: The single best place to start is by familiarizing yourself with the history of philosophy and after having gained an understanding on who and how deliberation and conceptual schematization has grown, you can begin the syncretic/creative process of being your own epistemic heavyweight. The philosophical/epistemological foundations of cognition and dispositional orientation are needed prerequisites. Scouring the internet for popular modern intellectuals will leave you with a superficial-at-best worldview and conceptual operating system that will never be up to snuff on a meaningful, academic level.

      Agreed, there is no replacement to attending philosophy courses that cover the classics IMO. Both the process of reading those works, and then in public with other people critiquing them, being critiqued yourself, and critiquing others is the best thing I ever did to improve the way I think. Trying to replicate this on your own, or even worse by reading superficial thinkers like Harris, Pinker, etc. is doing yourself a disservice.

    Interesting that Dr. Mike isn't a fan of Steve Reeve's physique! A lot of the guys in the 70s like Frank Zane idolized Reeves and were very inspired by him. He wasn't the biggest, not the leanest, but there is something sometimes to being "just right". Regardless, bodybuilding is a subjective sport. To each their own. I think one reason Reeves looked better than his colleagues was he did incorporate more volume at times (up to 27 sets per body part) while his competition focused on intensity (for example, Reg Park). Certainly, I agree Reeves would have benefited from splitting up the volume into more sessions!

Yea there is a lot of old cars that look cool as fuck and they're basically a work of art on wheels but when it comes to performance they're not even close to any sports car today... even the cheap ones...

    Hey great video guys!
    Regarding the last question, would this be an appropriate way to program WUP?
    Week 1 - Strength (3-5 Reps)
    Week 2 - Hypertrophy (6-12 Reps)
    Week 3 - Metabolite (15-20 Reps)
    Week 4 - Power/Recovery (1-3 Reps)
    Thanks!

    if you are well trained you can do metabolic workout with 85%rm 90%rm. it’s heavy. 30/40sec rest between sets. 2/3min between exercise. most of the people can’t manage relativy heavy weights and great volume because their heart and lactacyd capacity is bad. my heart rate is 43bpm. you have to imagine your training like indoor cyclists. high volume high intensity short recovery time. so you involved fast fibers but also strenght for high intensity (balistic power..). imagine with 85/90rm a 3x8 20 sec tut 30 sec rest 20 sec tut 30 rest 20 tut. and so on. more you are trained mor weight you can load. fhe goal is to lift the most tons you can in the same amount of time (some minutes). if you are well trained you can do 20/25 sets in 50/60 minutes workout using 80/85%rm. the same for indoor cyclists. they have to train heavy (200kg squats, 8/10 reps with very short rest, or 250 3/4 repswitj a short rest - numbers only an axample but there are videos where they lift 230kg 3/4 times) and they have to generate a giaint amount of power at high frequency to go faster in a very short amount of time.
    fast fibers, no endurance no slow.
    you have to train hard your heart and your lactacyd system to improve performance. this doesn’t mean bulking. but gaining strenght improving muscle efficiency.
    obviously with this method you have to train day on day off day on day off etc

      @@daytonasayswhat9333 In his debate with Ezra Klein a little while back he's in the process of saying other people are thinking "tribally." That other people are giving into confirmation bias essentially. And he says "I know I'm not thinking tribally." Which to me is one of the most arrogant things someone can say in terms of understanding their own mind and epistemology. The point of cognitive biases and other flaws in human reasoning like them is that we cannot completely know them. If Socrates was knowledgeable for knowing what he didn't know, a statement like this from Harris proves extreme ignorance. It's something you can learn from even if you like the guy. But to me, it's proof he's a shallow thinker and a hack, there are much better public intellectuals, and beyond them much better philosophers.

      @@burner1303 Sam never stated in that interview, nor ever, that he is never subject to tribal bias and/or cognitive bias. In fact, he has said many times that he knows that he of course has biases. You should listen to his entire interviews and not just highlights from Buzzfeed or presumably what other edited version of his Waking up / Making Sense podcasts you are re-interpreting. As far as that statement goes, he was simply saying that at that moment, regarding that particular subject and situation, he did not feel like he was being tribal.
      I disagree and find Sam Harris as legit as it gets for both public intellectualism and philosophy. Have you ever read one of his books? It's very solid work.
      Anyway, my point is still that it's curious to hear Mike Israetel critique Sam Harris on rigorous debate. It's like a major leaguer pitching to a Division III college batter.
