My car accident story from 2005

  • In this video I share with you my experience of a hard impact car crash from when I was 17 years old in the passenger seat of my friend's recently acquired 1990 Mk3 Ford Fiesta. Despite me saying the car was a bit of a "relic" and a "tin can" it kept both of us safe so for that I have a lot of respect for it.

    i don't think i've ever sat and contently watched so many driving related videos before (unless they're from top gear), especially ones teaching a lesson. it's difficult when you have a short attention span and i'm 15 so i don't need to be worrying about driving for quite some time. but wow richard, i could watch your videos for hours. both lessons and storytime, i think you have a good balance of entertainment and educational information. i don't know how you do it but your videos really are fantastic. you're very genuine, keep it up.

    I understand your hesitation about doing this video for new drivers to see, but it’s other’s experiences that will help them become better drivers and hopefully learn from other’s mistakes. I like the fact that you told the story so honestly and didn’t try to justify what happened: a couple of teenagers being reckless. I respect that.
    I stumbled across your videos because my son is starting to drive soon and I wanted to find ways to explain things, because even though I’ve been driving for more than 20 years, I do it automatically without giving it too much thought. You explain everything with such detail, it’s refreshing. Thank you and keep up the great work.

    I’m very grateful for your courage and generosity in sharing your personal and difficult story. I started driving when I was 17 years old and I’m now 21, so I am still a relatively new driver. I always had a passion for driving a manual car, but it was hard to find good resources in the US where most people drive automatic. That’s why I was so happy to find your channel a few months ago when I bought my first manual car. Your videos have been a lifesaver for me, as they have taught me everything I needed to know about shifting gears, starting smoothly without stalling, and being alert and proactive on the road and in traffic. You have made driving a manual car fun and easy for me. Thank you for being such a helpful instructor!

    Last November I slid on a hill while cycling and flew few meters on a middle of a road landing half a meter from the entrance to a roundabout. I think what saved me from broken bones is high vis and a very cautious driver behind who saw me and managed to stop on time. Thanks for the story that highlights the importance of a seat beat.
    I remember a few years ago I was on a long coach journey across the country. I was sitting in the front seat of the coach. About two thirds into the journey we passed a police checkpoint. It was at this point that I realised that the driver was not wearing a seat belt because he put it on while approaching the checkpoint. Seconds after passing the checkpoint, he removed it again. It never made sense to me how a person who spends his entire working day driving a vehicle doesn't like wearing a seat belt. It seems incredibly stupid and irresponsible.

Full of energy and risk taking. Thank the absolute lord for your decision to put your seatbelt on!! And even to this day people still question it, just shows ya can’t take safety for granted!! I’ve been driving for 3 years but passed when I was 17 (so had a 4 year gap for uni), and I’ve actually learnt SO much from watching your videos even though I passed my test a fair while ago!! I really enjoy your teaching videos like on clutch wear and car mechanics. My father got into a car accident in the highway back in 2014 with the whole family while going out, and I'm basically traumatised after that. I love watching your videos Richard, even as a full license holder there's still so much im learning and adding to help my own driving, and hearing experiences like this definitely helps others. Im so glad nobody was seriously hurt! It was bad enough with the accident I was in which was not as bad as the one you describe here - it was night and I had stopped at a red light, I had been waiting there for at least a good 30 seconds or so when someone slammed into the back of me, pushing me through the red light into the junction. Thankfully no injuries (strangely I remember my overwhelming thought was I hoped I didn't get points on my license for going through the red light 🤣 No letters in the post so they clearly must have seen what happened on the cameras, not quite sure how that works.) It does affect you though, even now I get very nervous if I feel that somebody is driving too close behind me or seems to be approaching too quickly. Thank you for sharing these videos that we can all learn from.

  • @xMcMurderface

    Thank you for sharing this. Yesterday I was in a car accident - not a big, crazy, high speed one, fortunately. Actually a pathetically slow one that just scratched my (brand new!) car bumper and that of the other person's as they suddenly scraped across the front of me. I have only held my license since November. I'm not a young new driver - I'm 36, a mother, a physics student - and learning took me so long due to lessons being cancelled for so long in Scotland where I am. Because of huge gaps in learning during the pandemic, I took a lot of refresher type lessons with my instructor. I pride myself in being so careful. Like you, I would never be without a seatbelt - my grandad, who was a police officer, never started moving off until we had all belted up, and this is exactly what I do in my own car as a driver too. Safety first. Always. Yet this horrible incident happened yesterday. And today, I could barely cope with crossing the road on foot on a short wander to the shop. Every time a car with it's lights on passed me, it just brought back the total shock. I'm not even physically hurt from the accident. But I am really shaken as a driver. I have not been able to sit in my car yet and my husband is left struggling to work using a really rubbish bus service. I'm not sure when I'll get back to driving, or how I can get back to driving. If the incident could just stop replaying in my head a wee bit, I could maybe move on from it!
    But I'm wittering on now - sorry!
    Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I am glad you so strictly believe in always wearing your seatbelt - even laden with a mountain of McDonald's meals! It was worth faffing around a bit to get yourself strapped in. Where, and how, your wallet ended up .. Well, it makes you realise how lucky you were.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm sorry to hear you're shaken up and have scratched your new car. I do recommend getting back behind the wheel as soon as you can, try driving when it's quiet. The longer you leave it the harder it will be. Do an easy route when it's quiet and gradually build your confidence back up. Try not to dwell on it, these things happen every day, it's best to try to avoid them but also a level of acceptance is required for such things.

    @Conquer Driving, the experience of your accident give me a flash back. Around the same time I did hit a stationary vechile that was blocking a telegraph pole that I would have hit had a car not been parked, on the offside of the road. Hitting black ice not once but twice, I corrected the first skid to then hit a second patch of black ice just before a bend. I could see the stationary vechile getting closer.
    I remember my mother saying watch that car, my response was mum we are about too hit that car. Just glad that was nothing coming around the bend as the car went straight. Yes seat belts really do help save lives.

    I also wrote off a 1990s Ford Fiesta though it was a lot less dramatic when it happened to me, and I wasn't at fault. You've done well to go from that to, basically, being paid to be a passenger - though a far more active passenger than most!

    Hi Richard. Sometimes I drive fast with my ND MX-5 (which I know you have one of too haha) but I always check that my passenger understands and wants to drive fast and I'm always careful and buckle up. This is a nice reminder that annoying my passengers with proper safety (seatbelts, sitting up properly, no feet on the dash, etc) is SUPER important. 0 guilt about being a pain haha

    Excellent video, must admit I was a little hesitant when you said about nervous drivers, I thought 'oh my, should I watch this?!' but it was an honest account of an accident (with a very lucky outcome!) and I think it's something that all drivers especially nervous drivers worry about so it actually helped me as a nervous driver

    First of all i love your work even if i am driving in europe and i have to think in reverse on some of subjects. (Steering, lanes and stuff)
    You are a great teacher, and i feel like i am improving my driving skills when i apply your advices.
    I would love to see a video@ track races (not necessarily the prices as may not apply everywhere) explaining more in terms of car wear and tear and if would be more convenient and useful to use your own car or to rent one.

    I've been driving for 2 years now and when I get on my nerves I always floor the throttle all the way to the bottom to let go of my problems. I nearly rear-ended another car yesterday just a few inches away. From that day on, I've learned my lesson and never wanted to be a bad driver again.

    I came back to this because after having driven for the last 4 years without a scratch, yesterday morning I had my first collision with another car - thankfully not fully front on, but I had a brain fade possibly due to feeling drowsy while taking a left turn on a crossroad, where I for some strange reason completely forgot to look in front at the car traveling in a straight line and thus one that had priority. Only in the last two seconds did my co passenger scream and by then it was too late for me to do anything. I have always considered myself a very safe driver, and never forget my observations, but yesterday was one of those days where I hadn't had enough sleep the night before but still went with it, and then I also ignored that a passenger in the back seat didn't have her seatbelt on, thinking I will remind her 'soon'. She went on to have a broken tooth, and the car now needs a bit of repair.
    Moral of the story: no matter how good a driver you are considered, it only takes a momentary lapse to cause a serious accident. Also, please never drive when you aren't well rested. I haven't been able to leave the house for nearly 48 hours and haven't felt this depressed in a while.
    Richard, if you read this, could you please do a video about regaining confidence post an accident, especially for someone well experienced. Thanks for all your videos btw!

    Hi Richard. I'm a learner in Ireland but have found your videos very useful. This, however , is the first time I've commented as it was such a refreshing and honest description of a bad driving experience. I wonder do English learners have the same issue as I find here: more experienced drivers will do almost anything,
    sometimes very dangerously, to get past us as soon as they spot the 'L' plates?

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you for your compliment. Some drivers do that here, but it's important not to focus on them. For every 1 of them there are 50 patient people who understand people are slow when learning to drive.
