I honestly interpreted this as a woman with schizophrenia and she tried to escape the hallucinations by harming herself. However, the hallucinations are STILL there. In my opinion, that's why she kept seeing the creepy figure and why she was hearing the breathing. Thus, THAT'S why she burned her eyes, stabbed her ears, and even smacked herself upside the head multiple times. She wants the visual and auditory hallucinations to stop; and unfortunately, it's not uncommon for people with schizophrenia to go through moments like this. She tried running away, she tried closing her eyes repeatedly, she tried to harm herself ... but you ultimately can't escape your own mind. Your brain can have unwanted "guests" - i.e. mental disorders.

Everyone in the comments is saying how the story is about the girl having schizophrenia, but the creator of this video has responded to those comments and stated that they're "almost right". I on the otherhand, believe this is a story about suicide. The weird guest thing must be her fears or something shes running away from. Its clear that the guest isnt real as no other humans are able to see it. The guest must represent something the main character hates. Its so ugly that she takes out her eyes and ears. She refuses to see it, but in the end, she has to face it and come to terms with it.
It does, it's a very good skill you don't see often in the horror industry, not to say it's terrible to not have it. I'd like to recommend you a certain horror game called Darkwood if you like a good scare without any jumpscares, it's an amazing experience.
Sadly, it’s a very, very rare occurrence. Horror is extremely easy to make compared to other genres (don’t need a good story, don’t necessarily need good actors, just put some loud noises in there and maybe some blood and call it a day), so that’s why there’s not much talent in the horror industry, well at least that’s my opinion. These are the kind of minds needed in filmmaking, and sadly they’re very often overlooked. That’s why when I see something like this, I make sure I help the creator in some way, even if it’s just by liking the video or watching more of their videos.

There was this woman in white working outfit at her desk and she was alone, no one else was around. I was in there too close to her but she couldn’t see me. And suddenly I felt the inexplicable urge to scare her so I’d creep close to her ears and started moaning, and I’d see her face distort with terror all while she began to scream, and the more she screamed, the louder I moaned. For me, the saddest part is when her host leaves the protagonist unsupervised to go get her help. She's doing her best to make her feel safe and show her compassion, but in the context of what's happening that was a rookie mistake.
Honestly this has great great potential. It’s q1mins short, so I understand why the script lacks of development, but the sound, the camera movements, the cinematic shots and the idea are just grate and better than most of the cheesy and boring films I’ve seen
The ending is so adorable, I love how the Guest looks down so he can show he's been through it too. He wasn't trying to hurt her, he just wanted to be her friend probably.

I think the fact that there was barely any sound and no music is what made this so creepy, it makes the film more realistic, like this could happen to u, and if u, like me, were watching it in quiet (and the dark), this is extremely terrifying. Good job 👍🏼
I think it's a symbol for her at the end. The tight lips (she doesn't talk), the fucked up eyes (from the bleach* and the fucked up ears (because she stabbed her own), and bald because she would have needed surgery to fix all the damage. Maybe she knew she was having issues and was scared of what she might do to herself, or got sensory overload in vision and hearing and wanted to do anything to make it stop. Which is why the creature never hurt her. It is part of her. Maybe it was trying to stop her, but just couldn't speak. Which is also why it put its head down at the end. It's sad because it failed to help her, and instead terrified her in a misunderstanding. Notice she also has a surprised or sad expression at the end. Maybe she began to understand it too late. And being in that woman's house? It wasn't the guest, she was.
Ya, also judging from the subtitles too. In the end, where he tilted his head, there was ":'(". Every time it switches to him, there's an expression in the subtitles.
Did anyone stick around through the credits? 2 interesting tidbits for you... 1. The effects were all practical and took 6 hours to apply to the actress portraying “Guest.” 2. This short film is a proof of concept for a potential full length motion picture...so there’s a chance we’ll see more of “Guest” in the future. And I, for one, cannot wait. ❤️
My take on this is that Mary was running from her suicidal and harmful thoughts, she ran into the house opened her eyes and saw the creepy yet hilarious creature before her (those captions and his face are golden) she took the bleach trying to blind herself from it and the blade on her ears to drown out the sounds… when she awoke in the hospital/lady’s house and saw the figure yet again she realized it was her all along… the ear is proof of that… you can’t escape your thoughts instead seek help before it’s too late… I wish to whomever is going through a similar situation to seek help and know you’re not alone ♥️
She really hurt her self BC of him that’s just she poured bleach into her eyes just so she didn’t see him anymore I think that’s what he does but she can still see him
This was legit one of the best short films I’ve ever seen. I jumped when I say that demonic demon with them eyeballs about to pop out his socket. 10/10 keep up the good work
This perfectly captures the horror and sadness of having suicidal thoughts. Coming from somebody who has experienced them myself. It’s on the nose, and beautifully horrific.
I know this is going to make me sound stupid, but I am not understanding how this relates to suicide. I'm not trying to downplay it or in any way say that it doesn't relate; however, I am not understanding the imagery and how what was portrayed, within the film. Would you be willing to shed some light on this? @Adrenaline Living @finncallan
@@OrionFirefly the monster is suicidal thoughts. At least for me, i tended to sink back into my suicidal ways when I was alone, which is what is happening in the film.
So the woman that she is running/hiding from is the personification of her suicidal thoughts, and the only way to make her go away was self harm? Just making sure that I'm tracking. That's extremely creative.
My own personal interpretation Warning, spoilers After a little bit of research on "Samaritans", I'm starting to come to the conclusion that "The Guest" is a representation of the same mental health group that's displayed at the beginning of the video; it's a representation of the the "good Samaritan" as described in the bible. I could be wrong, but unlike the "suicide prevention hotlines" they have in the states, which are a complete fucking joke thanks to mandatory reporting laws, I don't believe the group listed at the beginning of the video have such restrictions. A statistic I found online suggested that over eighty percent of the calls the organization receives aren't for suicide or self-harm, but people simply reaching out, whether it's because they're overwhelmed with life, or just lonely. A "Guest" typically is somebody you invite in; it's somebody that you're trusting inside your home. Similarly, when the entity first shows up, she initially runs away, trying to hide herself. When that doesn't work, and it's apparent it will continue to follow her, she resorts to burning her own eyes with bleach, but she can still hear it, so she decides to jam a knife into her ear in an effort to no longer hear the entity. Later, when the woman leaves to go get a doctor, the first thing the woman sees when she uncover her eyes is the entity, which, at something of a stretch, could be a nuanced way of suggesting the entity is trying to help her. He turns to show her that his ear has been hurt in a similar fashion. The only way I can interpret this, other than the entity representing her fears, or as some symbolic representation of herself, is that the entity has been hurt by her actions, as well. It FEELS her pain, in the same way the individuals around you feel the pain that you're experiencing in those moments of difficulty; it's symbolic of empathy, and of sympathy. "The Guest" doesn't appear to want to hurt her, it's just insisting that it be there for her, which is all it does: it literally stands there, just watching her, listening to her, letting her know that it's THERE. When she's finally no longer able to see or hear the entity after mutilating herself, the camera pans to the outside of the bathroom, but the entity is no longer there. When she is able to see again, it's the first thing that's there again. I think it's meant to be symbolic of the way people see operators of the Samaritan. You WANT them to be there, because you invited them into your life as "Guests", but even when they invite people in, they can't help but see them as staring eyes, and whispering ears, speaking to the level of distrust that people experience from the people around them, even the ones that would like to help, because you're in pain, but the only thing people can do is just BE THERE. And when she's able to see again, it's the first thing she sees again; its disturbing figure is only present when she's able to see it. Having somebody there doesn't necessarily change the things you're going through. At the very end, the woman seems to understand that the entity doesn't want to hurt her. It is now looking gloomily into the distance. Much like the samaritan described in the biblical passage, the entity is literally tending to her bedside, trying to make sure she's alright. I think the point of the film is that sometimes, all we can do for people is be there, to watch and listen to them, even when they don't trust you. It speaks to the futility people often experience in the wake of people's self-destructive tendencies, because we can't do anything to stop them, other than sympathize with their pain and just be there. Literally, all it can do is watch, and listen, and hope it works out. Just like the samaritans.
I saw this short film three years ago. I was drunk, it was the end of the party. Someone thought it was a good idea to watch some horror stuff. Idk why but it was even worst watching this while beeing drunk. Today I found it back. And, god, this face still haunts me.
I personally think that this is about a person who has no friends, the “guest” portrays this person and could also symbolise how some people are afraid or try to avoid people who look different. The woman literally took her own sight and hearing to try and get rid of the creature, but failed. Yet at the end of the film, the guest looks quite sad and lonely. The guest may not want to cause any harm, it may just want someone to befriend it and not be afraid of its physical features.
One thing worse than the thought of being killed by a freak chasing you in the night.. The uncomfortable silence where you think "are you going to kill me or are you just gonna stand there?"
Can you please make a short film about how society and the treatment system treats people with disorders, traumas? Not only with schizophrenia, but how such people are affected by other people's views, opinions and judgments. In the same genre, I think this topic needs to be covered more
I actually recognize the creepy figure, as the girl herself. The personification of the self harm, that she caused to herself for not seeing and hearing the figure. In the last secounds,it rotates the head giving a sense of humanity. Magistral and brilliant work, even the effects, better than many other movies with a probably bigger budget. Awesome job guys.
Probably I'm wrong, but I think we are the guest, that does nothing but watch her without closing his eyes and breath loudly, all because of the anxiety of the scenes, and then feeling bad for her at the end
I think it adds to the creepiness that the thing looking at her has that human-like sway while it's standing instead of just being absolutely still. I know that's because of the person who's acted as it but it just adds this really creepy vibe of "it's definitely alive and it can see you". Like it's observing what she's doing like a human. Probably not intentional though but creepy none the less.
My take from this is that she can’t stand to be in her own body and her thoughts are so overwhelming that she would rather hurt herself than deal with the actual pain of just being herself. The “guest” is a reflection of herself and the constant reminder hurts her and angers her. At the end the “guest” turns away after seeing what she did to herself. The damage has been done. The scars are there. And I’m drunk as fuck and have work tomorrow morning.

The captions js made the “scary” creature cute 😭
My own personal interpretation
Warning, spoilers
After a little bit of research on "Samaritans", I'm starting to come to the conclusion that "The Guest" is a representation of the same mental health group that's displayed at the beginning of the video; it's a representation of the the "good Samaritan" as described in the bible.
Wow ... just wow
