I think you’re right that “All You Need Is Love” resonated more when it came out than it does now. I was seven when it was released and I will point out that it was the kind of song people sang to when it came on the radio. People in 1967 wouldn’t hear “Hey, Jude,” a major sing-along song, for another year! In a certain way, the Beatles kept rendering their earlier songs obsolete (by Beatles standards) as they went along. But George does mention “All You Need Is Love” in his tribute to John, “All Those Years Ago.” If you haven’t seen YELLOW SUBMARINE, which came out in 1968 or 1969, the animation accompanying “All You Need Is Love” adds to its charm.

It's an album 100%. I'll stand by that statement to the death. Also they were the absolute kings of the random music jam because they connected on such a higher level then most. Another cool video btw.✌

It's an amazing album with the qualifier that it's a complication of tracks that didn't make it onto other albums, so it naturally lacks a certain cohesion

I surely count Magical Mystery Tour as one of their LP-masterpieces. As great as the others because, apart from the EP tracks, it has all those wonderful singles with STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER/PENNY LANE on top but HELLO GOODBYE/I AM THE WALRUS and ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE are great too. Fully agree about the greatness of the title track. I have always been very fond of it. Underrated as an album? You bet it is ! Up to now?!!!!

Hi! Thank you for your sensible and intelligent views! I am 66 years old which means I was 7 when I first heard of them! My older sister informed me who they were before their U.S. tour. They had bubble gum trading cards then and they became a part of EVERYONE’S life! By the way, I think you could pass as John’s grand daughter! Believe it or not, you are very interesting and it’s fun to visit your land! I just happen to like people who think for themselves! Peace n love! -Terry

"We were robbed of so many George/Beatles songs" Preach!!! With George's birthday coming up, this kinda hit me in the feels. 😢. You could do a whole video on "Baby You're a Rich Man." Love John's voice on this, the harmonies, the intro. Thank you for the continuous reminder of how great and talented this little band from Liverpool is!

Boomer and long-time Beatles fan here. My family never watched Ed Sullivan. When my older brother said he wanted to watch Ed Sullivan, we thought he was crazy. But he said he wanted to see the Beatles. I was just shy of my eighth birthday and had no idea what he was talking about. Needless-to-say, I immediately became a huge fan. I've always loved Magical Mystery Tour. It's great that younger people are discovering them.

This is the album I listen to most, as a whole. Hello, Goodbye has always been my jam. I’m obsessed with Fool on the Hill. I get sh*t for loving Your Mother Should Know and Blue Jay Way. I scroll to the end of All You Need is Love for the “she loves you yeah yeah yeah” part lol. But unlike most everybody else, I don’t always listen to Strawberry Fields 😮 I have to be in the mood for it but the “nothing to get hung about” line is my favorite too. It’s the chord that makes it.

Another wonderful video in Lars Land! Love the way you explained your feelings for each song. "Blue Jay Way" and "Baby, You're a Rich Man" are two of my favorites. Love the whole album. Listen to it in mono if you can. The stereo mix is very well done. On the title track, you can hear the bus motor going from left to right speakers. I remember borrowing this from a neighborhood friend. It was on the Capitol Records orange label, and it had the booklet. When I bought my first copy in 1982-1983, it was the Purple label and it did not have the booklet. Now I have x amount of copies with the booklets 😀Thank you for reviewing this album Lars (they, them)!

I loved that book for almost 20 years and let a friend borrow it.

Fun fact: the opening chords to “I Am The Walrus” were inspired by a police siren the John Lennon had heard in the distance while he was at home. I sincerely hope you don’t have a siren phobia that ruins the song in another way.

John definitely contributed to the Magical Mystery Tour song as John said in 1980 (the 'Star Wars' interview at Record Plant) but may have undersold himself as he would sometimes do. His voice is all over it. Paul actually called it co-written. But it's accepted that Paul kicked the song off.
It is great how different the song is, with so much going on all through it.

I think the running order of the EPs was pretty much dictated by the desire to get the best possible sound quality: the two longest tracks get a side each, the next longest is paired with the shortest, and the remaining two are paired.

John Lennon always changed his opinons for the most part, but back in 1972 he did once say the MMT album was his favorite of the Beatles because it was so weird. It's interesting too that Paul McCartney was once publically asked what he thought about John's solo album "Walls and Bridges." He replied (from Wikipedia). "it was a "great" record, but "he can do better," citing "I Am the Walrus" as an example of something "more adventurous … more exciting." Paul also justified the movie MMT against critics by saying at least it gave us a video of John singing I Am the Walrus. So, Paul's now in control of completing John's song 'Now and Then,' which reminds me of I am the Walrus in melody. I'm hoping Paul uses this as an opportunity to give us back some Walrus vibes.

plus Magical Mystery Tour was eventually released as an album in the UK in 1976 so it wasn't just an EP set anymore. Most of the time the British Beatle LP was better than the chopped up American Beatle LP but in this case the American LP concept was better. So said John Cleese of Monty Python in an interview once I think. He should know, he was friends with 2 members of the Rutles

  • @NowhereMan2710
    @NowhereMan2710 ปีที่แล้ว

You can take comfort from the fact that Apple agree with your assessment - since 1987 the US album verison of MMT has been 'the' version in the Beatles catalogue, it makes for a better, more epic and sensible listening experience for the modern audience unused to singles as events, as the second side tracks were originally intended.

Side two of MMT is fantastic....arguably one of the strongest sides the Fabs ever released. Yes, it is a patch job, and that can't be overlooked. I mean, how can you miss with Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane back-to-back? And Baby You're a Rich Man is a GREAT deep cut. Side one does drag in parts......never liked George's Blue Jay Way and Paul's Your Mother Should Know is harmless fun, but nothing more. To sum up, MMT is a great listen overall.
Enjoyed the video! Have a great day!

The only Beatles album with a true Beatles instrumental on it...if you don't count Revolution #9 as an instrumental...and what an instrumental it is, "Flying" is like nothing else by the band. "Your Mother Should Know" is an overlooked classic. Magical Mystery Tour is a wonderful bridge between Sgt. Pepper's and the white album.

    1. Any collection of songs under one cover is an album. In my youth albums looked just like photo albums; two hard covers with pages in between. Except that record albums had sleeves instead of pages. The 5 or 6 sleeves would each hold a 78 RPM record with a song on each side. If one pulled all the records out of their sleeves and put them back in different sleeves the songs in that album were in a different order. Still an album. The UK and American erosion of MMT are two different albums with the same name. That’s all. Get them both.
    2. Penny Lane is not in “response” to Strawberry Fields. John and Paul agreed to each write a song about their youth. So the songs were concurrent rather sequential. But, I agree, Strawberry Fields has more gravitas, but thankfully, I like them both.
There are some Beatles songs that are better than others, but there are very few bad Beatles songs (regardless of what John may have said). Which is why they are still relevant.

  • @betsyab121
    @betsyab121 ปีที่แล้ว +1

American labels like Capitol would cannibalize the British versions. The British albums are considered canon...except for Magical Mystery Tour. This is probably because Capitol took singles like Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane ( which were NOT put on the Sgt. Pepper album because the label demanded more new Beatles music after almost one year of drought ) and All You Need Is Love and put them all on the B-side. This resulted in a damn tasty album that gave great bang for your musical buck! The one good thing Capitol records did!

As far as I'm concerned it may have been an LP, but it was never an album. I see it more as two 7" vinyl discs with three other 7" vinyl discs tagged on. As (I think) Ian MacDonald pointed out in Revolution In The Head, I Am The Walrus references Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds; Lady Madonna references I Am The Walrus; and Glass Onion references Lady Madonna (and I Am The Walrus).

It was unavailable but back up on you tube recently.
First time in America, February 1964. 3 1/2 months after Kennedy was assassinated. An unexpected beginning to and a much needed respite of deep sorrow and mourning...Both major historical events
Incredible as to what these photojournalist brothers caught. They Never interview the Beatles-they filmed them being themselves.
George is adorable in a scene where he's on the phone, think it was his family, talking about how many Beatles singles are high in the charts.
Ringo dancing at a club-ala Hard Days Night?-Being so very sweet and natural to a bright little girl on the train, such a Dad.
Paul being a funny dork and loving the camera, surprise! So fun.
Brian being so proud and beautiful as he smiles unaware of the camera. His excitement resonates as I watch
John being smart and no weird faces. Looking young and hot, lol
The documentary also includes the 2 brother team knocking on an apartment door-as they were unable to get into The Ed Sullivan show (Paul tried for them but no dice...)-A cool New York City family invites the duo in, so was very nice and they were able to film the show on their TV. The rest is absolutely brilliant showing the reaction of the daughters especially the teen exuding the magic so many of us still feel today. Love It!
The film is in mostly in very good shape including warm lighting. Their equipment is unique and the Boys are really curious about how the camera is not attached to the mic. the Beatles ask questions and John is such a kid in this scene messing around with this new technology, special to see him so happy too.
It; kinda like A Hard Days Night imo, but it's real life John Paul George and Ringo. Both Unscripted or interviewed.
The feeling to me is I have traveled in a time machine looking back to 1964 to see what I dream of now. The press have brown hats, baggy suits, paper and pencils in hand and giant flashes on cameras. Just going for a story unaware of the History being made. I came away with the group magically being able to relive this epic time in their lives, it's weird but feels true to me...The fans are smart and humorous too.
I've never gotten bored with it. A familiar thing like The Beatles and music itself. Best non interview ever!
    Jam packed awesomeness!
