  • Jimmer Fredette was the biggest star in college basketball at BYU. He was a top 10 draft pick in the NBA. Then, he was a benchwarmer. And now, he's in the D-League, trying to claw his way back onto the big stage in front of tiny crowds with the Westchester Knicks. In this VICE Sports exclusive, Jimmer and his family take us through the journey to this point and we get a behind-the-scenes look at his life out of the spotlight.

      The point is have some perspective. There are much more deserving people than Federette who suffer much worse.
      Federette is in the upper 1% of income earners in the US. Anyone making over a million dollars a year is very wealthy.
      There are single moms struggling to make rent. There are homeless vets with PTSD. There are school teachers that make 30k a year. Keep it in perspective. Jimmer's life is better than 99% of people who have ever lived.

    • @SCep34life
      @SCep34life 7 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      Eh, he'd need to do more than that. He's an undersized 2 guard with not quickness and athleticism. If he learned to pass the ball and run an offense besides chucking up 3's and take it to the hole every time he get's the ball, he's not going anywhere. Even playing in Europe would be hard since he doesn't play well fundamentally. He needs to completely revamp his game or he'll be working a day job in a few years.

      Jimmer is to soft and doesn't have the confidence necessary to play at the NBA level. Maybe I'm wrong about him being soft but he defiantly doesn't have the confidence. So many interviews he's so pc about everything at some point he needs to just realize "we win these games because I am bad ass" That's the only difference between steph curry and Jimmer.

But those injuries eventually derailed him down a path of drugs and alcohol. Mark Titus, former player for Ohio State, has a nice article about him.

    The D-League is not the minor league for the NBA. The NCAA is its farm system. Additionally, NBA scouts and recruits players from Europe way more than from the D-League. D-League is a graveyard for 1st round picks that didn't work out, or for guys trying to get back into shape to join a roster.

    • @magnumxlpi
      @magnumxlpi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +SFO14 How is NCAA it's farm system? You get 4 years in college. A farm system or minor league is for players to develop that aren't ready for the NBA. Do you also think MLB minor league isn't a farm system?

    • @SFO14
      @SFO14 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      magnumxlpi Again, sticking to basketball. How many players in the NBA played D1?
      *You get 4 years in college*
      How many players who played D1 didn't actually go the full 4 years? "One and done" sound familiar? Kentucky's program is a prime example. Sources speculate Anthony Davis made upwards of $300K for attending one year of college at UK from boosters and other back-channels.
      The only reason players even have to be one year removed from HS (if you're a US-born player) is because of shoe deals. Nike, Adidas, etc. have contracts with the colleges and the players have to wear them and promote them "for free" for at least one year. Go attend some AAU tournaments and see how many sharks are in the stands. Biggest fucking racket in all of sports.

    There are/have been plenty of great College b-ball players that don't fit in the NBA game. I think Fredette fits into this category unless he finds the perfect NBA spot. When he came into the League, I thought his best case scenario would be J.J. Redick-like. Redick is bigger, stronger and a slightly better shooter. Can you imagine being a Mormon in the NBA?! It must be really tough to go from being an NBA draft hero to a D-Leaguer looking for a 10 day contract.

    • @BlitzzGames
      @BlitzzGames 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      exactly

    • @Fakename70
      @Fakename70 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What would being a Mormon have anything to do with? Fredette isn't the first high draft pick to go from hyped to where-are-they-now in short order.

    • @domais68
      @domais68 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The NBA is not Mormon-friendly. By that, I mean that most NBA players like to cuss, gamble, volume screw as many women as possible and go nuts having fun. Players are young, rich and enjoy all forms of excess. That is not the Mormon way. Mormons don't drink caffeine. They are conservative and sheltered. What's normal for most in the NBA was likely a massive shock to Fredette. (BYU to the NBA!) Those life shocks affect everything, including results on the court. I'm all for freedom of religion so, if someone is Mormon, I have no problem with it. However, unless they have some special coping mechanism which allows them to look the other way on just about everything, they will probably struggle. On a related note, do you think NBA players are excited when they're drafted by the Jazz? No, they're miserable and want to leave ASAP because Utah's values are not important values to most NBA players. No offense to anyone who is Mormon. I thought this was obvious!?

    • @Fakename70
      @Fakename70 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +james lachs
      The guy has wanted to be in the NBA since he was a teenager, if not before. I'd think it'd be kind of hard to not know what you're getting yourself into the closer you get to it. Especially for a player who was as hyped at university as Fredette was. His one-dimensional game is what did him in. Personally, I don't think he's really that much of an improvement over Jason Kapono.

    • @domais68
      @domais68 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I guarantee he wasn't! BYU has an "honor" code built on informing on your peers. ESPN has called it, "the Snitch School." Jimmer would be risking everything if he even shook too long at the urinal. No offense to Mormons, that's just the way it goes. I grew up with a devout Mormon and he's the first to admit that this is the way Mormons keep their peers from drinking caffeine, wearing make-up, dancing, having their hair too long etc. Sad but true.

      +OreoKooki Gaming Jimmer is a shooter. He's not a basketball player. He plays poor defense, he's not quick, and he's not a willing passer. JJ Reddick plays solid defense, can create hit own shot, and it doesn't help that he's fundamentally sound since he played under coach K at Duke. Jimmer is the Tim Tebow of basketball. Until he shakes his ego and actually puts in the work to be a good player, he won't sniff the NBA.

      +oswan88 Cauley-Stein has been alright and is super raw but he is just surviving off of athleticism. Reke fell off a cliff, Isaiah wanted to get the hell out of there, and Boogie is dominating on a bad team. Look at the last few drafts: McLemore (who imo has a lot of potential), Stauskas (I was praying they would draft Payton), Robinson, Trading for Fredette, and on and on. Kings suck at drafting, development, scouting, and coaching.

Steph worked hard but he also got the opportunity to play decent minutes cause the warriors were complete ass back in the day. I think Jimmer just needs the opportunity, same goes with Seth Curry, he can ball but doesn't get minutes. First time Seth gets decent minutes like 24 I think, and he drops 19.

    Jimmer's problem is the same as a lot of players who star in college and flop in the NBA. For him to be effective he needs to be the focal point of the offense. It's not that he isn't talented it's just that on a court full of elite players, he doesn't know how to contribute as a roll player. Dominating the D league was great for his confidence but kind of did him a disservice as well because what he needs to get better at is finding ways to score within the flow of an offense when he only gets 10-15 minutes a night. I wish him well but I think his destiny is in Europe.

  • @killsourenemy

    He's a 6'1" SG with a molasses like release. What did the dude expect? A slow shooting 6'1" SG is going to get smothered by NBA length and speed. He should have changed his shooting mechanics and learned to play PG while he was in college. Bad coaching decisions from the people at BYU who were more interested in winning games than giving this guy an NBA future.

    Sorry you have to play under Rambis, who'd rather give Sasha Vujacic playing time instead and he hasn't made a shot in 3 months... shameful.

    • @ednelson2501
      @ednelson2501 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +jon Q Kurt rambis is coach of the Knicks. he wants people that can do what it takes to win. I like Jimmer, but he is a one trick pony. All he can do at an NBA level is shoot, No defence, rebounds and looses the ball to often, Some peoples skill set peaks at different levels. Jimmer seems to have found his celling at a D league level. He is good but not at an NBA level. I am not sure what Sasha can do either, but Rambis seems to want to play him from time to time. Jimmer will end the year shooting 1 for 1, with 3 points.

    • @jonq8714
      @jonq8714 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tam hill The guy can flat out score. There are plenty of 'stars' who play zero defense in this league and get a pass... I am just tired of zero offense coming from the knicks back court... he can help off the bench. there is always a place on the floor for spot up shooters, although jimmer can also create off the dribble.
      point is, why not see what the results are playing him instead of sasha? it can't be any worse.

    • @ednelson2501
      @ednelson2501 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jon Q I think you both are right, But jimmer can score off the bench for 15 mins a game, while sasha cant. But his lack of D or his ball handeling probs will come back to haunt him. But for a 15 mins a game guy he should be worth a shot. If only to give Mr Vujacic a few days off. Or a few weeks , months or the rest of the year. I dont care as long as he dosnt play. And if Jimmer can up his D, maybe he can fill a spot and get regular minutes.
